Situation on Samui worsening, airport closed

Situation on Samui worsening, airport closed

The rain has been relentless today and by 4pm the airport was officially closed, this is on BKK Airways Facebook page, funnily enough nothing is listed on their website;

All flights to/from Samui are cancelled due to bad weather. Passengers can contact 02 270 6699, 1771 or 077 422 512-9 (Samui Office) for rebooking the flight. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Lines of people at Samui airport today

Maenam area today

Chaweng today

The situation on Koh Phangan is not that great, see picture above and on Koh Tao long term residents report about flooding as worse as they have ever seen and they're slowly running out of food and drinking water.

The worst for Samui is still coming with a predicted 260mm of rain tomorrow. Wind Guru is predicting more rain tomorrow with a lot less wind but by Thursday things should have calmed down again.

If you find my blog and updates useful, don't feel embarrassed by donating some beer money! Plenty of buttons do the trick here and if you want to book your hotels on Samui or in Thailand, please use the links provided. It all helps to keep this blog going!

Hi Adam,

Most certainly looks like it and that's the general consensus right now.

Sorry to hear that Andreas, just like in November, I'm on Koh Lanta! Barely made it out of Samui, just in time!

Hi Camille,

Friends of mine getting married on Koh Samui on Thursday, a lot of friends there at the moment including my boyfriend! They are on Chaweng, just got a phone call from him saying there were floods, bit concerned right now.

Thanks for the blog, news (in english at least) does not seem that helpful!

Should I be worried for their safety?

Camille said...

Hi Amy,

Glad to be help although the conditions could've been better!

I don't think there's a need to be worried, although the situation is not very good right now.

It looks like unprecedented flooding though!

Thanks Camille please keep us up to date!

Hi Camille;
Thank you so much for your helpful blog. Me and my wife have already planed a vacation to samui from 8th of April and i am not sure despite of high cancellation cost whether we should cancel it or not? What would you do as a person who is living there for a long time? Do you know anything about the forecast of that days?

thanks in advance

Camille said...

Hi Volkan,

By Thursday the situation should be fine and the rain should have stopped. Come 8th April, it should be hot and sunny again, as it's supposed to that time of the year.

Hope this helps for now.

Hi there,

I have never looked at blog before and never posted a comment - just want to say thanks so kuch for the information - there is nothing on the Samui airport site and nothing on the Banbkok Airways site. You are providing a great service for those of us trying to navigate a way round all this,

Thank you,
Julie

Hi Camille,

Thanks for your useful posts to keep us updated!

I think you have been asked many time about the situation in Koh Samui recently. I just saw the news on TV today.... wish everyone now in Koh Samui & nearby islands safe!

I'm coming back to Koh Samui again with my family on 4th April, the news said it will keep raining in the next few days..... :(

it really makes me worry if the roads are still flooded, cos' we'll arrive at night (if the flight hasn't cancel) and we will drive to the hotel (we haven't been before) which a bit far at Laem Set... So really hope that weather & everything get better in next few days!

Best Regards,
Mavis

Hi Julie,

Thanks for the heads up! Please keep poppin by in the future!

Camille said...

Hi Dark Mavis (!) ;-),

The 4th April should have seen a big improvement on weather and clean up will be in full swing, at least I expect that.

The rain should subside soon!

How are things looking? What's the latest weather report?

I'm due in from Bangkok on the 14th April for my honeymoon, are things likely to be back to normal by then? I believe my hotels in Samui and Phuket aren't flooded but that could be because the worst hasn't him them yet.

Thanks for all the good info,

Graham

Thank you Camille for all these informations!

We've spend 10 days in Samui from march 14 to march 24th, looks like we left just on time !

Camille said...

Hi Graham,

By the 14th April I expect Samui to be up on it's legs again and everything more or less being cleaned up.

Camille said...

Hi J-P,

Looks indeed like you left just in time.

Dark Mavis said...

Hi Camille,

Thanks for your advice & your frequent posts & photos to keep us updated the current situation over there!

Btw, we planned to drive by ourselves throughout the whole trip (4-9 Apr). We will be arriving at night & our hotel is at Leam Set, is a bit far from airport & most of the sightseeing spots, do you think it is safe to drive?

Many thanks again for answering our question & easing our worry :)

Best Regards,
Mavis

Hello Camille,
fantastic blog!

The flights cancelled on Sunday, right?
And My flights out of Koh Samui were due yesterday, when the airport next opens (hopefully tomorrow, fingers crossed!) would the flights that had been booked for sunday be leaving first, or is it a case of who arrives there first in line?

Thanks again! Absolutely great blog!

J-Jack

Camille said...

J-Jack,

The airport opened earlier today so I expect by Sunday the schedule to be in order again.

HI Cammille. I'm always following your daily report of Kou Samui and found it so helpful and rely on.I have some questions I believe you will help me.
A group of 44 school students (17yrs-18yrs old) with 2 teachers are arriving on 12/04/11 at Koh Samui from Hong Kong flight and will stay at Chaweng Cove Resortel (everything booked and paid).
How bad is this part of Chaweng Beach? How are the access from airport to Chaweng beach? Are the restuarants open?
thanks and hoping to hear from you soon
REgards

Camille said...

Chaweng Cove is a relatively low part of Chaweng beach road but should be fine now. The sun was out today and clean up work is in full swing. Around the 12th I would expect at this moments good enough conditions and the worst should have been cleaned up and repaired by than.
That's just my humble opinion.
