Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 21^st May – 27^th May 2018 

It's Sunday morning and time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 21st May – 27th May 2018.

It's nice and hot over Koh Samui with plenty of blue skies and some clouds.It's midday and already 32C and it feels a lot warmer. The temperature is still rising, get that sun lotion out and protect your selves.

This morning I ran the Hat Yai half marathon as part of the 12th Hat Yai marathon, a big event and a well organized race. I came 9th in my age category  of 55-59 out of 52 participants and 60th all over out of 1088 participants. My fastest half marathon to date.

Right now I'm on the public bus back to Koh Samui, we left an hour ago and are expected to be on Samui around 7pm. Still a few hours to go!

It was cloudy in the morning during the race, which made for cool temperatures, ideal for racing with 27.5C.

Now at midday it's 31C and partially cloudy with the sun peeking out,

Last week it was nice and warm around Koh Samui but we also had some showers, thunder storms and a few very hard showers. All in all not too bad though and maximum temperatures ranged from 29C to 34C.
A good week in my opinion.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 21st May – 27th May 2018; The dim sum restaurant in Hat Yai where I had breakfast this morning. It's located near the bus station in Hat Yai. Tasty and seemingly very popular since it was very busy. Many restaurants were closed though, due to Ramadan.

The forecast for next week looks like we will have cloudy to partially cloudy days with most likely some rain on Wednesday and a few tropical showers throughout he week. 

Still plenty of sunshine to enjoy though.

Fairly typical weather for this time of the year. Enjoy your time on Koh Samui!

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 1^st - 7^th May, 2017

At last, here's the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 1st - 7th May, 2017. Due to travelling to Hat Yai for a a wedding and computer problems, I couldn't update any earlier. 

It's already almost at the end of the week by now but here we are, at last. It's partially cloudy on Koh Samui and there was some early morning rain with some more rain last night as well. Current temp at 9am is 30C

Currently I'm on Phuket for the May 2017 PADI IDC, which started yesterday and we have a drizzle this morning with a rather cool current temp of 25.9C at 9am.

Last week it was hot and humid with max temperatures between 34 and 36C. We also has some light rain a few times. Typical tropical showers with some light to hard rain but for a very short moment only. Like a rather typical May week I would say.

This week has been warm and hot again with a bit of rain as well and the forecast predicts more of this until after the weekend.

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 29th May, 2016

Today's weather;

There's a hazey cloud cover over Koh Samui and the last bits of wind are about to blow over the island today. Currenttemp at 10am is 31C

This morning I am in Hat Yai under a mostly cloudy sky with a current temp at 10am of 30.2C I participcated in the 10th Internation Hat Yai marathon and I ran the half marathon. For more info, see my proud picture below.

I got down here by bus and am taking the 11.30am bus back to Koh Samui.

Yesterday saw another windy day with a partially cloudy sky and a max temp of 32C

10th Hat Yai International Marathon, I participated in the half marathon and ran a new personal best, 21.21km in 1:47'56 and placed 5th in my age category, in a strong field. Hapy days down on Hat Yai!

The forecast the last bits of wind and clouds going into today and this night with the sun popping out again afte tomorrow. I don't expect any rain either, it's sunny times again in the making. Enjoy!

Today's weather;

A near perfect blue sky welcomes the new year around Koh Samui this morning and it should stay this way for the rest of the day. Today is also the last day with a strong wind. Current temp at 7am is 27C

Here in Hat Yai, we have plenty of clouds this morning with a couple of blue spots, Yesterday we had a nice morning here but before noon it started to rain and there was plenty of it afterwards, during the day. Current temp at 7am is 26C

Yesterday started out very nice but eventually may have had some rain at certain parts of the island. Max temp reached 30C

The countdown in Hat Yai yesterday, there were plenty of fireworks and a lot of police and security staff around

The forecast is looking good. the wind should be gone by tomorrow and for the next ten days expect sunny and clear skies with a very rare shower.

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 31st December, 2015

Today's weather;

A late update today due to me participating in an International 10 mile new years run in Hat Yai and we just got back to the hotel room.

On Koh Samui it's very sunny but there's a stiff breeze around the island this morning. The expectation for the last day of this year 2015 is that it will remain nice and sunny all day long with possibly some clouds around midnight but it should stay dry. Current temp at 8.30am is still a cool 28C

Back here in Hat Yai it's also nice and sunny with a few scattered clouds with a current temp of nice cool 26C at 8.30am. My last run of the year went really well, 10 miles or in this case 'only' 15.27 km were completed in one hour and 16 minutes, which earned me a 5th place in my age category. The year finishes on a runners high!

The forecast is looking very good, dry for the next couple of days but some very strong wind tomorrow but after that the wind should cease and very sunny skies should be ours with a very occasional shower being an option.

Food on wheels; Pork head in Hat Yai

It's been over a year ago that we visited Hat Yai for the last time, May 2013 for a 13km run as part of the Hat Yai marathon.
As part of my 'Food on Wheels' series, a contribution from Hat Yai.

Last May I planned to visit again and run the same race but due an Achilles' tendon injury, I had to cancel those plans at a very last moment. Although that didn't make me happy at the time being, it did allow my tendon to heal and run the Laguna Phuket half marathon and Lansaka full marathon (my first full marathon) a month later!

During that visit last year, I noticed this by now familiar motorbike with side car but this time around with new goodies or rather food on sale. Pork heads!

This is the first time I saw this on offer on a motorbike. A rather interesting experience, although I saw plenty of pork heads at local markets around Samui and on the mainland.

Anybody for some fresh pork head?

Interesting and out of the ordinary things like pork heads for sale can be found anywhere in Thailand, especially local markets are a great place to find sometimes unusual things. Enjoy your stay in Thailand!

Today's weather;

Overcast with some blue spots in it and a nice breeze, it looks better compared to yesterday around Koh Samui. Current temp at 7am is 27C

Yesterday saw a nice morning with overcast around Koh Samui but soon the clouds became more grey and around 4.30pm there was a thundershower with some on and off drizzle afterwards. Max temp reached 32C

It seems that Samui has hit a monsoon pattern, dry and sometimes sunny morning, clouds during the early afternoon and rain during the later part of the afternoon.

The forecast keeps predicting wind for the next 7 days but not much rain.

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 27th May, 2012

Today's weather;

The whole family is in Hat Yai this morning, where I just completed a 13km run in a satisfying time for me. 1 hour and 7 minutes in case you wondered! As the picture below shows, Hat Yai has a lovely blue sky and the current temp at 7am is 24.5C

Hat Yai is the third largest metropolitan area of Thailand.

Yesterday saw overcast during the whole day around Samui and later in the evening there was a serious storm, which we missed because we're in Hat Yai. Max temp reached 32.5C

In Hat Yai it was sunshine all around yesterday and the city was bustling with the usual weekend visitors, mainly from Malaysia and a lot of folk were around that were participating in today's marathon. Max temp reached 33.8C

The forecast for Koh Samui for the next 7 days is a potential for stormy weather tonight again and the wind receding progressively over the course of next week.

Registration for the Hat Yai marathon's 13km run

Registration for the Hat Yai marathon's 13km run

We arrived safe and well in Hat Yai just a few hours ago and the registration and picking up the start number for tomorrow's 13km run as part of the 6th International Hat Yai marathon has been completed.

The drive down here was swift and once we were south of Nakhon Si Thammarat it cleared up and we had no rain or drizzle anymore. Hat Yai is sunny right now.

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 4th January, 2011

Today's weather;

We just had a very short but hard shower on Koh Samui but immediately the first blue patches of sky in this new year appeared. Current temp at 7am is 25.3C

Yesterday we had rain during the morning but very early the rain eased up around Samui and the remainder of the day was. 3.7mm yesterday compared to 100mm the day before, a nice improvement! Max temp reached 27.3C

As reported yesterday, the situation around the island is under control.

The forecast for Samui didn't change very much, a sunny week lasy ahead and the wind should ease off come Friday.

The floods in certain parts of Southern Thailand are easing up, like Phattalung and Hat Yai but in other areas the pressure is on and road, train and air traffic is interrupted. Especially the Chumphon area and Nakhon Si Thammarat are hard struck at this moment.

The road carnage also continued and we're on day number five out of the seven dangerous days of New Year festivities. Up to this date 282 people have been killed and 2,783 injured in 2,544 traffic accidents nationwide, the The Road Safety Centre reported.

Buri Ram was still the deadliest province with 16 fatalities, while Chaiyaphum was the only accident-free province.

Compared with last year, deaths were up by one, while injuries were down by 308 and accidents down by 337, Silapachai Jarukasemrattana, deputy permanent secretary for the Transport Ministry, said yesterday.

Je Festival or Vegetarian festival to start in Phuket and Hat Yai

Tomorrow it's time for the Je Festival or Vegetarian festival to start in Phuket and Hat Yai.

During one of my Visa runs to Hat Yai, a few years ago, my wife and me stumbled over a procession as part of the Je Festival or vegetarian festival that was going on at the time being.




The scenes that ones does witness are pretty intense, as you can see on these pictures. This is the mere reason why I post about this non Samui related Festival, without being there, it made a big impression on me.



Although these picture were made in Hat Yai, in Phuket there's a Je Festival going on as well.

The Festival in Phuket is on a larger scale that the one on Hat Yai, although, probably due to it's smaller size, in Hat Yai it was no problem to get in touching distance of the participants in the procession.

The quality of these pictures may not be that great, that's because I took them with my old style, non digital camera and had to scan the pictures.

The skewers are all pierced through his cheeks! Once you get close to them, you can see that they are in some kind of trance.

After the procession, your cheeks may hurt!
