Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 1st January, 2015

Today's weather;

Here we are, the first day of 2015! Welcome to 2015 and once more a Happy and healthy New Year to you all.
There's a lovely, almost perfect blue sky over Koh Samui this early in the morning. Current temp at 7am is 27C

We're in Nakhon Si Thammarat this morning, where I participated in a New years Eve run through downtown Nakhon, from the city pillar shrine to Wat Mahathat and back, a distance of 4.39km which I covered in 24'50 with a 4'35 pace. My fastest race to date. At midnight I was running in a short shower.
There's a grey sky here but it's dry. Current temp at 7am here is 25C

We're in Lan Saka, where the sky is nice and blue and the sun is just about to heat up. Current temp here at 7am is around 21C and we just returned from Rajabath Uni of Nakhon Si Thammarat, where I participated in a 10.5km run in 52'28.6 which is 1 minute faster compared to last year.

On Koh Samui it should be very similar conditions, although there may be a cloud or two with a current temp at 7am of 23.2C

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 7th April, 2013

Today's weather;

A strong wind is blowing over Koh Samui but the sky is almost perfect blue with a current temp at 7am of 27.7C

Wat Mahathat in Nakhon Si Thammarat, where we were yesterday. In the big chedi on the picture Buddha's right foot is kept, which tells you the importance of this temple. Yesterday we were lucky and we could walk around the chedi because they opened it, not an every day occurance

Yesterday saw another hot day both on the mainland and on Koh Samui. Our originally booked 5pm ferry was cancelled and we were put on the 6pm ferry, which was packed to the rafters. However the boat was swaying a little bit and once we got out of the car at home, there was a very strong wind blowing. Max temp reached 35.3C

The forecast has changed drastically overnight as well. A welcome for the locals and Westerners living on Samui and a scare for the visitors seeking sun over the next week. Rain is predicted from Wednesday onward and lots of rain are expected on Saturday 13th, Songkran! Let's see if this prediction holds on.

Wat That Noi, Lak Chang, Nakhon Si Thammarat

Over the weekend during our visit to Lan Saka I was looking forward to visit a big temple or 'Wat' that I saw two weeks before on the way home. Little did I know how big and important this Wat actually is.
It turned out to be Wat That Noi (วัดธาตุน้อย), which housed a big reclining Buddha statue (Phra Non) but more importantly, the mortal remains of Por Tan Klai, a famous monk from a decade ago (1876-1970). This used to be the temple where he lived.

Wat That Noi is part of Wat Mahatat in Nakhon Si Thammarat town, the big temple we visited in 2007 and over the recent New Year's eve.

Wat That Noi, Phra Non

Phra Non or reclining Buddha

PT Klai was named the 'Golden Mouth Master' because he kept a vow of silence for many years. He didn't want to speak because whatever he said came true, and he felt sad for the bad things that happened if he predicted them. Although he did not speak, followers found ways to get around his vow, they got him to nod or shake his head in response to their queries on various matters.

Wat That Noi, Chedi

Chedi with remains of PT Klai

It turned out that near Lan Saka there was another temple, Wat Khiri Kan, where he used to live and on top of a nearby mountain there was a sub part of Wat Khiri Kan where many of his followers visit and stop their cars or motorbikes to pay their respect. Hopefully more on this later.

Wat That Noi, remains of PT Klai

Mortal remains of PT Klai

The remains are PT Klai's bones only. It's on the top part of the chedi and may people visit. We where there on a Sunday and it was really busy, probably it's quieter during week days.

Wat That Noi, Saam Ma Nen

A big PT Klai and two Saam Ma Nen

As already mentioned, it's a big temple and you an wander around a bit, there's plenty to see and everywhere are small buildings, pavillions or even entries in the main chedi where you can find more statues of either PT Klai or other deities.

Above is a big statue of PT Klai's head with two 'Saam Ma Nen', the small statues had boxes in their hands and when you put some money inside, a tape played, praying for you.

Wat That Noi, Bodhisatta

Bodhisatta

Inside the shrine you an find the skeletal Bodhisatta, the 5 ascetics, Phra Indra playing the lute (to remind the Bodhisatta of the Middle Way) as well as the lady Sujata (on the right, unfortunately not on the picture) who offered milk rice to him before his final struggle towards Enlightenment.

Wat That Noi, Deity

Deity

Another deity that is hidden in one of the smaller buildings on the Temple grounds, This one was a mean looking one!

Wat That Noi, Pavillion

Pavillion

Very worthwhile to stop for a visit, here's a link on how to get there, it's about 20 km from Lan Saka or about an hour or a bit more from Nakhon Si Thammarat town.

Wat That Noi, Pang Palelai Buddha and PT Klai

Pang Palelai Buddha and PT Klai

It turned out that my wife already had an amulet from PT Klai, given to her by her Grandma, which she in turn received when PT Klai was still alive! At all three locations we visited during this trip, dedicated to PT Klai, she bought more amulets!

On 'Wayne's Dhamma blog' you can find a few more pictures of the Wat That Noi, from his 2009 visit to this Wat.

Yesterday was a bit of a mixed bag kind of weather around the island, sometimes rain and sometimes even a little bit of sunshine, although the latter not too much! Max temp reached 30C

The forecast for the next 7 days predicts fairly smooth sailing with not that much rain anymore but mostly cloudy skies though.

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 1st January 2013

It;s mostly cloudy with a few blue spots here and a current temp at 7am of 24.6C

On Koh Samui it's cloudy and wet from last nights rain. Plenty of power cuts around the island as well since yesterday evening. Current temp at 7am is 28C

Wat Prah Mahathat, Nakhon Si Thammarat

Wat Prah Mahathat, Nakhon Si Thammarat last night

Yesterday saw lots of rain on Samui during the evening and lots of outdoors activities had to fall back on plan B for their New year's celebrations. A rather unusual happening on this specific day. Max temp reached 29.5C

The New years run went well, it was dry all evening long in Nakhon Si Thammarat and I ran 4.4km in 21 minutes. We stayed on to celebrate the New Year at the Wat Mahathat. Max temp reached 30.2C

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 4th January, 2011

Today's weather;

We just had a very short but hard shower on Koh Samui but immediately the first blue patches of sky in this new year appeared. Current temp at 7am is 25.3C

First blue sky patches of this year

Yesterday we had rain during the morning but very early the rain eased up around Samui and the remainder of the day was. 3.7mm yesterday compared to 100mm the day before, a nice improvement! Max temp reached 27.3C
As reported yesterday, the situation around the island is under control.

Chaweng beach yesterday, getting better now by the day but remain aware

The forecast for Samui didn't change very much, a sunny week lasy ahead and the wind should ease off come Friday.

The floods in certain parts of Southern Thailand are easing up, like Phattalung and Hat Yai but in other areas the pressure is on and road, train and air traffic is interrupted. Especially the Chumphon area and Nakhon Si Thammarat are hard struck at this moment.

The road carnage also continued and we're on day number five out of the seven dangerous days of New Year festivities. Up to this date 282 people have been killed and 2,783 injured in 2,544 traffic accidents nationwide, the The Road Safety Centre reported.

Buri Ram was still the deadliest province with 16 fatalities, while Chaiyaphum was the only accident-free province.

Compared with last year, deaths were up by one, while injuries were down by 308 and accidents down by 337, Silapachai Jarukasemrattana, deputy permanent secretary for the Transport Ministry, said yesterday.

Financial help for flood victims in Nakhon Si Thammarat

Financial help for flood victims in Nakhon Si Thammarat

Just like last month, when I was able to financially help flood victims in Chaweng, from a donation made by Peter in London, this time around we were able to help people in Nakhon Si Thammarat. Our friend Tawan lives there, who we visited in June 2007.

The best picture I have of Tawan's house, which is located in the background

Their house got flooded very badly and the whole ground floor had to be taken out and rebuild, plus many utensils were lost. We were able to help out with 5.000,-THB and Tawan's family was very happy for the help. The second third of Peter's donation is now gone. Thanks to Peter for helping out!

Around Samui there are various construction works under way to restore flood damage or to improve the overall situation. One of the things currently being done, is putting a new drainage system in place on the road leading from Tesco Lotus down to Chaweng where the one way system starts, as can be seen in the picture above.

Friday 20th May there will be a big underwater clean up on Chaweng Beach.

It's hard to believe that the island underwent such an out of season flood just over a month ago! Things are on the up again and right now is a great time to visit, not too busy and great weather!

Hope to see you soon.

More updates about floods and drought in Thailand, March 2011

More updates about floods and drought in Thailand, March 2011

The Bangkok Post has a very good graphic displayed below that shows the affected areas that have severe flood and severe drought. All in one country. For good measure, some earth quack affected provinces are thrown in as well.

Ever considered this; A crocodile is captured by zoo workers yesterday at Suan Somdej Phra Sri Nakharin Park, where Nakhon Si Thammarat municipality’s zoo is located. It was one of 11 crocodiles that escaped the flooded zoo. Zoo staff shot dead one crocodile and caught three others. Seven remain at large. Two bears also escaped. NUCHAREE RAKRUN

Lucky Charms in Thailand are out of Luck

Lucky Charms in Thailand are out of Luck

Last year in June we had a nice and relaxed trip to Nakhon Si Thammarat in which I talked and had pictures about the Thai Lucky Charms or Buddhist Amulets.

The recent Wall Street Journal of 7th April had a very interesting story about the Jatukam Ramathep amulets which were the absolute craze around Thailand last year, see this article in The Nation of last year.

Have a read in the Wall Street Journal article, it's interesting and explains the addition to the list of speculative market bubbles popping around the world, where you can add this: Thai religious talismans.

It's interesting to see how influential these talismans can be and how Thais believe in the protective powers that amulets or tattoo's can have.

Trip To Nakhon Si Thammarat

Welcome to this trip report to Nakhon Si Thammarat.

One of my wife's friends, Tawan, who works at the same hotel that she used to work at, was ill since a few months and we decided to pay him a visit. The plan was to visit him in his home town of Tha Sala, which is on the way to Nakhon Si Thammarat and visit the fairly famous Wat Pra Mahathat in the city of Nakhon itself.

We took an early Seatran ferry over to Donsak at the mainland and upon arrival at the mainland we tried to book a ticket for the ferry back, that same day. We were told that all ferries from 4 pm onwards were booked and maybe we could get a place on the 7 pm ferry. We decided to stay overnight and night take any chances for having to wait a couple of hours and then being told that there's no space anyway.

It was a really nice drive from Donsak via Khanom to Tha Sala, lush green on both sides of the road and hardly any traffic, in sharp contrast to Koh Samui nowadays, unfortunately.

On our way over to Tha Sala, we encountered two weddings, which according to my wife meant good luck. Upon arriving at Tawan's home, it turned out that there was a ceremony, called Pim Nam Rong, at the temple next to the school grounds where they were making Buddha amulets. It was very busy and cars were parked everywhere. This raised the amount of good luck for the day according to my wife.

After having parked at the school grounds we had to walk through the rice paddies to reach Tawan's house. We sat down and chatted a bit and ate the food that he had cooked for us.

It's season for rice planting, the picture above shows the rice paddies surrounding Tawan's house and the rice plants that are being planted.

At the back of Tawan's house was this beautiful little river, tracking it's way through the countryside. Tawan has 6 more brothers and sisters, at my Dad's, they were with a total of 14 children (good faithful Catholics, back in the days!) which I thought was quite a lot, but in the house at the back of Tawan's house, they had 20 children!!!! The oldest was now 36 and the youngest 9 years old. All those 20 kids have been raised in a smallish 3 room house next to this bend in the river.

After we were done with eating and talking at Tawan's house, we wanted to hit the road and have a look at the Wat (temple) near his place. The ceremony that I was talking about in the local temple, was about making Buddha amulets. Here's a picture of the 'stamping' machine that is used in order to make the amulets. When we arrived, the ceremony was just finished and we ended up buying a copy of each of the two amulets being 'stamped' that day, a small one for 299 Baht and a bigger one for 499 Baht.

There were also a couple of elephants at the ground, which according to Tawan, had a football game the previous day, as part of the Temple party. Our son is highly enthralled by elephants and was very happy when he could lay eyes on a bunch of real ones. This is one of the cars that travel with the elephant show, it makes for a real side show feel back in the days when the circuses had all those 'freak shows', some of the stuff that is still alive and kicking at Thai fairs.

After the stop at the local Wat, it was time to move on to Nakhon Si Thammarat. It's mostly famous for it's big Temple, Prah Mahathat, the city's most hitoric site but Nakhon Si Thammarat, was a also a very important centre of religion and culture in the past, part of this having to do with the fact that it had a harbour. Thai shadow play and classical dance-drama were developed in Nakhon Si Thammarat. The city has also a bit of a rep for having a lot of rough guys and being a violent city.

Once inside the city, around noon, we drove to the Wat Mahathat and found a parking space directly in front of the entrance to the temple grounds. The good luck was starting to pay off!

Immediately we stumbled over a couple of ceremonies going on simultaneously, all related to more amulet 'stamping'. This temple caused a rage a few months ago by introducing amulets in a certain style. When the 'first edition' went on sale, people got crushed to death by trying to buy one of the amulets. Despite this tragic event, it created a hype all over Thailand and now all temples in the region are cranking out amulets in this style, like there's no tomorrow, hence the explanation of the ceremony near Tawan's house. Although, yesterday, 15th June, was thought of as a rather lucky day, see the two weddings and two stamping ceremonies planned for this day.

The picture above was taken inside the Temple grounds and is part of a square wall around the most sacred part of the temple, the bot, where inside the walls are lined with these tranquil galleries where dozens of Buddha statues sit, called wihaans (Buddhist image sanctuaries). It's by far the biggest temple in the South of Thailand, comparable to Wat Pho and and other large Bangkok wats.

This is the most sacred part of the temple. It's statues representing Queen Hem Chala and her brother, who reputedly founded the temple complex over a thousand years ago.

Inside the same room where some pictures of monks, this particular one seemed to have reversed Vulcan ears and I wonder if he's somehow related to Mr. Spock.

There's load of stuff to see, wandering around the bot, and to my big surprise, I found a canon which has Dutch origins, it had VOC printed on the barrel, which stands for Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie, which was established in 1602. It shows the importance of the harbour, how Nakhon could develop into such a cultural centre, since inside the museum grounds are also two museums (unfortunately one was closed) and there was original 'Delfts Blauw' , porcelain with Dutch land scapes and scenes on them, on display. What a surprise it was to see these Dutch artifacts so unexpectedly in this place. A few more pictures of the museum, amongst others pix of a 12 meter long whale skeleton can be found here.

Outside the bot, life went on in the meantime and this picture shows me together with a kind of Brahman, a guy who travels around Thailand and visits sacred ceremonies. He's from Lopburi, which is north of Bangkok. He had a big area set up where he was about to do his thing. Whatever that was, since we didn't stay around to watch him perform.

At around 2 pm it started to rain for an hour, so a perfect time to sit down and eat something. Since we're in Thailand, food is never far away and inside the temple grounds was also some kind of market area where lots of religious artifacts were sold, among tons of amulets and thee had to be a food court. Here's were we ate. Some good curries on display.

Here's another picture of the 'stamping' machine, in which in this case case, coloured material is inserted in the machine, together with a small gold piece and/or a gold leave.

At around 3 pm we called it a day, the rain had stopped and we walked back to where the car was parked. Here it proofed to be a very lucky day for us, since for all the three hours that we were at the temple grounds, I had left the car keys sticking inside the drivers door!

After we considered how lucky we were, it was still off to Tha Sala, to drop Tawan off at the school, so he could walk home and we were off to spend the night in Khanom.

We ended up in Nai Phao bay in Khanom, looking for a place to spend the night.

We ended up in the Supar Royal Beach hotel, a room for a 1.000,-Baht which allowed all four of us to sleep. The food outside of the hotel, in their beach restaurant was very good. Here's a picture of the view from the 5th floor at 6 am.

Last but not least, back home, here's Nathon on Samui as seen from the Seatran ferry.
All in all a very nice and relaxing trip in which it was nice to spend some time with the family.
Hope you enjoyed the story and the pictures and am looking forward to hopefully read some comments.

Cheers,
Camille
