Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 11th September – 17th September, 2017 

It's late Sunday afternoon, and time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 11th September – 17th September, 2017. Late in the day but not forgotten!

Today started out fairly cloudy but during the afternoon the sun started to break out a bit and came peeping through the clouds. The temperatures immediately went up a couple of notches. Current temperature at 4pm is 32C

Last week saw only two days with some rain and the rest of the week ranged from partially cloudy to fairly sunny. It didn't get too hot, with max temperatures ranging between 30C and 34C. By no means did we have the torrential rain and flooding that happened on Phuket late last week!

From Monday to Thursday I was in Pattaya, visiting some friends. It had been a while since I was there. Pattaya is interesting and has it's pro and cons but for a few days I can enjoy it.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 11th September – 17th September, 2017; Pattaya beach road before noon time. Fairly quiet for traffic but the beach was rather busy.

Next week looks from mid-week to the end of the week might see some rain. Come Thursday and Friday we may see some strong wind and a bit of rain on Wednesday with some more but minor showers towards the weekend.

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 18th February, 2016

Today's weather;

It's fairly cloudy over Koh Samui but the sun is breaking through the cloud layers and there is a stiff but nice breeze. It should become sunny later today. Current temp at 7am is 27C

Late this afternoon I will get a flight back to Koh Samui.

In the meantime, in Pattaya a slightly hazy morning sky is waiting for the sun to warm up and it looks like a warm and sunny day is in the making here. Current temp at 7am is 23.7C

Yesterday saw a fairly cloudy day around Koh Samui with sunny moments as well. Max temp reached 30C

The forecast is changing ever so lightly but in general there should be not many clouds over the next ten days, but I'm not sure how accurate that is at the moment, since recent days have been fairly cloudy, Nonetheless, there should be plenty of sunshine over Koh Samui to enjoy a nice day on the beach or with a trip around the island or to enjoy other day time activities.

There may be some wind blowing in, which keeps it cool and towards next weekend there may be an isolated shower.

Today's weather;

It's partially cloudy at some parts of the island, with some heavy clouds hanging over Koh Samui mixed with very sunny stretches of the sky. There may b a few rain drops today. Current temp at 8am is 28C

In Pattaya it's a bit hazy but it looks like a nice blue sky may shape up soon. Yesterday we had some very hard rain here during the afternoon despite of a very nice and sunny start of the day. Current temp at 8am is 25.5C

Yesterday saw a sunny and warm day around Koh Samui and  some very strong wind last night. Max temp reached 31C

The forecast looks mostly sunny for the next ten days with possibly a few smaller showers towards the end of next week.

Today's weather;

It's mostly nice and sunny around Koh Samui this morning with at some areas possibly a partially cloudy sky and the sun is here to stay today, be ready for a warm day. Current temp at 8am is 28C

Yesterday afternoon I arrived in Pattaya and just like on Samui, it's warm and sunny here. Current temp at 8am is 26.1C

Yesterday saw a very warm and sunny day around Koh Samui with a max temp of 31C, it sure felt a lot warmer!

The forecast is looking good, besides some stronger wind today and tomorrow, it should be sunny skies galore for the next ten days.

Curfew lifted on Koh Samui

Good news ofr Samui; The curfew installed by the current military junta has been lifted since yesterday for Koh Samui and Surat Thani and for two other locations, Phuket and Chonburi or better known; Pattaya.

The reason behind it was to ease the atmosphere at these locations and reduce the fallout on the local economy.

The Thai Hotels Association (THA) is asking Military Junta to create recovery plans to restore confidence from international markets ahead of high season as seen very slow new booking for October and January.

Oil fields around Koh samui

Here's my 3.000th post on my Samui info blog and although that in itself is cause to celebrate and a   milestone, unfortunately the topic that I address this time around is one of great concern and might affect us in the future of our beloved Koh Samui.

It’s now confirmed by a representative of the Ministry of Energy that oil drill projects around the islands will begin their exploration process in April 2013. The nearest point from Samui's shore is less than 40 kms, only 36.7 kms from Koh Phangan and also less than 40 kms from Koh Tao.

According to the EIA report, which states that the areas that are in biggest danger are Bophud and Maret in Koh Samui and Baan Tai in Koh Phangan. 

On the picture we can see 4 areas for drilling, the lot B6/27 is PTT, the next lot named Salamander Energy is supposedly a Chevron daughter, which unfortunately has the worst reputation when it comes down to accidents and spills and there’s lot G6/48 by Pearl Oil and CEC (NuCoastal) also mingles in.

It is our final call after a more than 3 years fighting through legal channels via Administrative Court and National Human Rights Commission and demonstrations around the island. Please address this to as many people as you know  to help spreading words among friends.

The risk is out there and we all can help. Just think about what happened in the Gulf of Mexico not too long ago! If anything would happen with these rigs, the coast from Songkla all the way up to Pattaya would be devastated and Thailand’s tourism industry would be in tatters.

Today's weather;

Koh Samui has overcast to show for this morning although the sun is trying very hard to burn it's way through. Current temp at 7am is 26.7C

Yesterday was sunny all day long and very hot indeed! Max temp reached 33.8C

The forecast predicts strong(er) wind on Wednesday and Thursday with possibly a few showers on Thursday. The rest of the week should be fairly sunny with the possibility of a tropical shower.

Pattaya marathon, race day

I did it, I ran a personal best time today on the Pattaya half marathon this morning and besides beating my previous personal best time on this distance by 8 minutes, I also ran a half marathon for the time under 2 hours! Smiles all around!

The whole race I ran my own tempo and I was actually really relaxed. Had a nice start and kept a good pace all around the course, made sure I drank and ate enough and am happy all around with my performance. My time chip places me as 315th finisher out of 1085 runners and 44th out of 248 in my age category.

It was a massive event, when we did a U-turn at the half marathon race, there were still hundreds of runners behind me, an impressive but also very motivating sight! Not to mention that there must've been a couple of hundred runners in front of me! According to my wife, they announced over 3.000 runners in the quarter marathon.

It was a really hard course, constantly going up and down, breaking the pace many times. I'm all the more surprised I broke my personal best time on this difficult course. I can only compare it to the Phuket Laguna half marathon which is more or less a flat race, which I ran last month. Part of the mystery however is probably explained in the next picture.

This was the first time that used energy gels, they keep you hydrated and give you the necessary carbs, protein etc for a period of around 45 minutes . I took one 15 minutes before race start, one around 10km and one around 15km. I could feel a different running sensation, very clear thoughts in my head and a faster pace compared to my previous two half marathons in Phuket, especially towards the end of the race.

After the race I was very happy with my time and I felt good and felt a quick recovery. The only thing that wasn't well organized today was the lack of post signs of how far you were into the race, I saw one 8km sign and the 3km, 2km and 1km to go signs. 
I felt that I could get a good time when out of nowhere all of a sudden the 3km to go sign showed up. Around the 2km sign, smack down in the middle of  walking street, the leader of the marathon passed me by or did he fly by? Looking at the time displayed on the car in front of him, I knew I had a good chance of beating my personal best. Although the last km was really hard, I didn't expect to be this fast!

Running through Walking street when the last leftovers of the night stumbled out of the discos was kind of interesting though!

Some thoughts though, it always beats the hell out of me that during the race, somewhere around the 15km, 16 or 17 km mark, you name it, all of a sudden someone passes by you coming out of the background as if they started just a few km's ago. Beats me all the time, where were they all the time before they passed me?

Anyway, off to breakfast with my hungry wife, lots of thanks to her for the moral support and waiting at the finish line today! Later today we're off back home to Samui again.

Today's weather;

Sunshine with a couple of clouds, that's Koh Samui for you this morning! Current temp at 7am is 25C

In the meantime, back in Pattaya, just after having finished the half marathon in a personal best time of one hour and 54 minutes, it's lightly clouded with plenty of sunshine and fairly warm already with a current temp at 7am of 28.5C

Yesterday was a warm and sunny day on Koh Samui with a max temp of 30C, somewhere on the island there must have been some rain but not in the north eastern part of the island.

Pattaya was also hot and sunny yesterday, max temp reached 31.7C

The forecast for Samui is looking good for the next 7 days, sunny and occasionally, maybe a tropical shower.

Pattaya marathon, registration

Registration

Done and dusted and what a show it is here. The 21st edition of this Pattaya marathon is a big event!

Along beach road plenty of stands selling running materials and promoting their own marathons, Kanchaburi, Chiang Mai, Bangkok events and also Koh Samui. Quality for a change! The registration area inside Central Festival was also crawling with runners from all over the region, Malaysian, Singapore, China, Japan and plenty of other countries and of course lots of Thai runners.

It seems all very well organized, efficiently all bib's and shirts and bags are handed out to the participants. It's going to be very crowded tomorrow morning and an early one for me as well, wake up calls at 3.45am and race start at 5am!

This evening plenty of activities with live music, free food for participants and who knows what else is organized is going on in front of the Central Festival shopping mall. We are conveniently located in the Sea me spring too hotel, around the corner in Soi 10, quiet but nearby!

I wonder who designs the shirts for all the running events around Thailand, the color schemes and designs are to say the least 'interesting'. No complaints though, they come for free.

Am looking forward to this run, it's going to be a hard one with lots of descends and ascends and long sloping roads. Not a route which I can run under 2 hours, anywhere around 2:15 hours I will consider good.

Time to catch some sleep soon, an update on the race will surely follow tomorrow. This will be my last race for a while, the PADI IDC's will start coming in fast soon, the first one is scheduled to start 23rd July in Dauin, Philippines which will see me leave Koh Samui 21st July.

Pattaya Marathon, 15th July 2012

Joggers from all over the region will flock to the hedonists’ haven for the Pattaya International Marathon on July 15. What a great way to introduce this event! Hahaha. Nonetheless, this coming Saturday my wife and me will fly to Pattaya where I will participate in the half marathon event, starting Sunday morning 5am in front of Central World on Beach Road.

Organised by Pattaya City Hall in co-operation with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and the Athletic Association of Thailand, the 21st edition of this event will be divided into five categories; Marathon 42.195 km, Half Marathon 21.100 km, Quarter Marathon 10.550 km, Student Run 3.500 km and Wheelchair Marathon 42.195 km.

It's a very popular event, probably the biggest running event I will participate in up to date.

Half marathon route

It's going to be a tough course, after the start there's a slight ascent from Beach Road towards Sukhumvit, I expect Sukhumvit to be flat and than down to Jomtien, via Soi Wat Boon. Almost at the end of the race it goes fairly steep uphill towards the Big Buddha hill, that's going to be a challenge. I don't think this route will allow me to run it under 2 hours.

With what seems to be a light Achilles tendon injury, my preparation isn't the best but my core condition should easily carry me over to 15km, after that it's each kilometer for it's own! Probably by the 18km mark I'm wondering who's idea it was to sign up for this! Providing I reach the finish line, most likely I will be considering for a few hours that I will never sign up for such a race or half marathon again. Just give it a few hours and I will be searching the agenda where and when the next event will be held!

The finish for me should be shortly after 7am and by 5pm we're on the plane back to Samui. To all my Pattaya friends, since you don't have anything better to do on a Sunday morning (yeah right!), all support between 5am and 7am is welcome!

Koh Samui has some nice blue skies this morning with a current temp at 7am of 27.7C

In Pattaya it's very similar, a blue sky with a few clouds in it and a current temp at 10am of 31.6C

Later today I'm off to home sweet home again, where the school for the children started again after 6 week holiday.

Koh Samui has once more a blue sky to show for and it looks like it will heat up again. Current temp at 7am is 27.5C

Yesterday saw a sunny an warm day around Koh Samui with a shower and thunderstorm in the early evening around 7.30pm. Max temp reached 34.5C

In Pattaya it was warm yesterday, although partially clouded all day long. Max temp reached 33.6C and it remained dry all day long.

In Samui the wind is supposed to pick up over the next couple of days which hopefully gives the island a nice cooling breeze and it looks like sunny clouds with an occasional shower.

During my recent trip to Pattaya, earlier this month, I found this interesting Thai tricycle catering to the Western crowds. How innovative and an excellent choice to be included in the Food on Wheels series!

It's interesting to see how adaptive some of the Thai vendors are and this one takes the strudel by selling Western orientated food!

The 60,-THB price seems also perfectly all right to me, although I didn't test the quality of the Doner.

Today's weather;

Koh Samui is looking good again with a nice blue sky and sunshine. Current temp at 7am is 26.2C.

Later today I'll be back on Samui and in tomorrow morning a PADI IE will start.

The forecast is still good but only for the next 5 days, after that rain is predicted. Enjoy whilst it lasts.

Pattaya has a similar weather system as Samui there's a blue sky to boost. Current temp at 7am is 28C

Yesterday saw a lovely around Pattaya and we had a very nice afternoon at the Sriracha Tiger Zoo. Max temp reached 31.5C

The Bangkok flood situation is at a stalemate but more evacuation looms and a battle with dirty water and garbage is at hand.

There seem to be various complaints about the apparent misconception that Suvarnabhumi airport is closed, well, it isn't! It better not since I have to fly back later today to Samui! Pictures of flooded runways at Don Muang airport and flooded planes didn't help!

An unexpected side effect, possibly one of the many, is the large number of protected wildlife species which have come to light since the floods has prompted authorities to toughen measures against illegal wildlife imports. We'll see if anybody will follow up on this!

Today our travel party in Pattaya went for a day trip to the Sriracha Tiger Zoo. It's about a 40 minute ride outside of the city of Pattaya but well worth it!

The zoo claims a population of 200 tigers and around 10,000 crocodiles, the largest such populations in the world. Admission was 450 Baht for foreigners and 150 Baht for Thai.

Once you arrive at the fairly large park, there are shows on about 30 minutes, so you keep well entertained, hopping from show to show. There are pig running contests, elephant shows, crocodile shows and tier shows. You can have you picture taken whilst you sit on a crocodile, with baby tigers or with big tigers. Each additional thing you do is 100,-THB and big sized pictures of each activity go for 200,-THB. They make for good souvenirs.

Don't forget that you're in Thailand, so food and drinks is largely available everywhere.

In one of the restaurants we had a Chinese style buffet lunch and part of the menu was crocodile sateh as pictured above. With immense population of crocodiles they have there won't be any shortage of meat anywhere soon.

The shows are entertaining and don't last too long, which keeps it all interesting enough and it gives you time to leisurely walk to a next show, lined up somewhere else in the park.

You don't want to imagine what happens if this crocodile population would be able to escape in a flood, like is happening right now around Bangkok! There are already too pictures of captured crocodiles in the flooded areas!

It was a good days out and I can recommend taking a trip here if you're on Pattaya.

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 6th November, 2011

Today's weather;

Koh Samui's sky has opened up again today and there aren't as many clouds as yesterday. Current temp at 7am is 24.6C

The forecast remains remarkably good with just a few isolated showers predicted for the enxt 7 days and plenty of sunshine towards the end of that 7 day period.

Yesterday saw Koh Samui clouded but dry Max temp reached 31.6C

Today I will still be in Pattaya with a flight back to Samui scheduled for tomorrow afternoon. It looks like we're going to have another enjoyable day here as well. with plenty of sunshine. Current temp at 7am is 26.3C

Yesterday saw also a nice day with plenty of sunshine in the greater Pattaya area. Max temp reached 30.3C. My friends with whom I'm travelling did an aquarium dive at the local 'Underwater world aquarium'.

In the meantime the situation in Bangkok remains critical and there's still plenty of speculation that the entire city will flood and more areas in the western part of the city are being evacuated.

Humanitarian aid experts say that poor coordination between the government and international organisations, including the United Nations, is hurting flood relief efforts.

Suvarnabhumi airport is still operating as usual and is expected to remain unaffected throughout the whole time period of flooding around Bangkok.

Today's weather;

Koh Samui is cloudy this morning but it looks like it will stay dry. Current temp at 7am is 25.2C

The forecast has changed for the better again although it going to be rather cloudy but not wet!

Yesterday saw a sunny day around Koh Samui. Max temp reached 31.7C

Pattaya is looking good this morning with the sun rising and just some milky clouds . Current temp at 7am is 25.7C

Yesterday saw a nice and sunny day at Pattaya with a max temp of 31C

We went to dive at the Hardeep and had some good dives and a nice day out.

The situation in Bangkok is not rally changing and the thing to consider is that the water doesn't a way out for the next 4 to 6 weeks because it's high tide. There will be thousands of people out of jobs and without any money, another very sad but also scary thought! Currently there seem to be each day at locations around the city where the local population takes things in their own hands, to avoid or lessen the local floods.

Holiday cancellations are becoming an issue at the moment although the South and actually the majority of the country is not flooded!.
