Food on wheels; Manila food carts

Since I just got back from a trip in the Philippines, with two night in Manila, here's a Food on wheels; Manila food carts addition to the Food on Wheels series.

Food on wheels; Manila food carts

First a general update and a bit of personal observation; the majority of the Philippine population seems to be a poorer compared to the average Thai population. The food on wheels in Manila was merely push carts or bicycle carts but not that many carts with a motorbike, which is common in Thailand.

Food on wheels; Manila food carts

The pictures I took in the Ermita area of the Philippine metropolis clearly show this. There's only one motorized vehicle in these pictures and hat's what the average in Manila probably is.
Above and below you can see samples of bicycle carts, a common sight in the Philippines.

Food on wheels; Manila food carts

On the other hand, there were tons of small carts all over the place, selling local goodies or more familiar goods, like fruits or as can be seen above, corn on a stick. There's a wide variety of food on offer in the streets of Manila.

Food on wheels; Manila food carts

This pushcart pictured above was loaded with coconuts, very refreshing in the dirty, hot and busy streets of the metropolis. In Tagalog (the official Philippine language), they also have 'buko', which is coconut juice, also very nice and refreshing.

Food on wheels; Manila food carts

Hope you enjoyed this addition to my 'Food on Wheels' series, an international addition this week, which shows once more the variety and ingenuity of the local population(s) to adapt to the local circumstances and keep this Asian street food scene going.

This morning I was in Dumaguete in the Philippines, where it was mainly cloudy but dry. Due to an early flight, which was delayed but no internet or wifi working at the airport and a massive taxi queue upon arrival, today's update is late and comes from Manila where I am right now in a partially cloudy and fairly sunny city with a current temp at 1pm local time of 33C

Nike We Run Manila 10KM

This monrin at 5.30am the 10km We Run Manila race in the Philippines started and I was one of the 13.000 runners who participated.

My race shirt with individual bib number

The 'Nike we run' race series has visited 30 cities so far this and there are two more to go with the grand final in two weeks in Rio de Janeiro and over 350.000 runners have participated worldwide, so far.

My finishers shirt

My time was better than expected, around 52 minutes. I only arrived in Manila at 1am and got to bed in my hotel by 2am with an alarm set for 4.15am. It was either not 10km or I ran better than anticipated. Either way, it was fun and strange to run with so many people, especially the start was rather frustrating. People who go in front and than start walking?
The turning point was impressive though, I finished in the first 300 runners and to see a couple of kilometers of runners coming towards you at the turnaround point was great!

It was fun to do and I'm happy with my first race outside Thailand.

Snow Patrol, live in Manila at the Araneta Coliseum

Believe it or not, I had never heard of the band! However, one of my old friend from my music industry days is now a big promoter in the region here and he often times has shows on in places like Bangkok, Singapore, Jakarta or Manila. Although we haven't met in over 20 years, we still stayed in touch through Facebook and he saw that I was making my way up from Subic after my dive adventures on the side mount course and he invited me to come and see the show last night, with the red carpet laid out all the way, back stages passes et all were waiting for me!

Snow Patrol during their show

The venue, the Araneta Coliseum is probably best known for the 'Thrilla in Manila' the last out of 3 fights between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier, which took place 1st October, 1975.

A poster advertising the show

Due to the recent flood problems in and around of Manila, it wasn't clear how much the show would be affected, the Smashing Pumkins only had 2.500 people during their show on the height of the floods at the same, 9.000 capacity venue just two days ago. There were 5.000 expected due to the circumstances for this show.

The crowd and the stage, picture by Kris Rocha, the pro version

It turned out even better and around 6.000 people came to see the show. It was also a good show. The band has catchy songs and besides their hit 'Chasing Cars' they had a couple of other real good songs in their repertoire. I enjoyed the show and the band! Internet in my hotel is really slow, I made a vdo of Chasing Cars but can't upload it in my hotel, I will add this vdo somewhere over the weekend and add it to this post, so stay tuned.

My not so pro version of the crowd, taken from next to the stage, 'stage right'!

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 10th August, 2012

Today's weather;

Koh Samui was slightly clouded this morning but the sun will warm up soon and it will be another hot day in the making on our beautiful island. Current temp at 7am is 27.5C

Yesterday I made it one piece to Manila and later this evening my flight to Bangkok is taking off, tomorrow I will be back on Samui. Manila is sunny this morning and besides many potholes in the road, there isn't that much damage to be noticed, at first sight!
Last night I went to see Snow Patrol at the Araneta Coliseum, famous for the 'Thrilla in Manila', between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier on 1st October, 1975.

All the diving in Subic went off without a hitch by the way, please check my dive blog report. I am now a PADI Recreational side mount diver.

Current temp at 8am local time is 29C

The real trike in action on Manila streets, man powered!

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 22nd July, 2012

Today's weather;

Koh Samui is doing it again today, blue and sunny skies, two days in a row! Current temp at 7am is 27C

Manila is my home for another couple of hours before I take off to Dumaguete airport and transfer over to the Pura Vida resort in Dauin where I start a PADI IDC tomorrow. My 3rd IDC in the Philippines.
In the meantime, although it's dry this morning, manila had rain for the last 3 days and yesterday was wet all the time that I was out and about. Next to my hotel in Ermita is the Robinson shopping mall and there was a dedicated runners shop inside so I went ballistic!
Current temp here is 25C, it's cold!

Jeepney in Manila's streets this morning

Yesterday saw a nice and sunny day around Koh Samui, I left around 10am and upon arriving in Bangkok it was cloudy but dry. Manila on the other hand, my final destination yesterday was wet.
Max temp on Samui reached a whooping 34.3C

At Bangkok airport I met my sister and her family, me coming from Samui going on to Manila and they coming from Vietnam moving on to Samui! It was good to see them although it only was for one hour!

The forecast for the next 7 days improved slightly, the wind seems to have dropped a bit. A tropical shower on some days is still in the cards though.

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 5th March 2012

A part of Manila on final approach this morning around 5am

It's been a travelling day yesterday and today ain't over yet, it's just about to start. It all began with a boat transfer from Gili Air to the Lombok mainland, with a cloudy but nice sky. With a hell of a rain shower later, we had a pit stop in Mataram, the main city on Lombok to drop off a cat at the vet but we made it well within two hours to the new airport in Phraya. After a short wait it was off to Jakarta where a 6 hour wait started. Most of that was spent in a lounge, where you in exchange for approximately 7 USD can sit in an air conditioned room with free food and drinks. The flight was delayed by half an hour and now I'm at Ninoy Aquino airport in Manila waiting another 5 hours before a domestic flight will take me to Cebu.
It's not done yet, than! After a pick up and short transfer to the main office of Sea Explorers in Cebu, for who I conduct a PADI IDC on Malapascua, it will be another 2 and a half hour drive by car and a half hour boat ride before I will arrive on Malapascua. I'll be knackered by that time!

In the meantime, Manila has a nice, partly clouded but also partly sunny sky. Stay tuned!

On the road again, Philippines, here we are!

On the road again, Philippines, here we are!

Yes indeed, this post comes from manila International airport in the Philippines, where I'm waiting to board a plane to Cebu in about an hour time. From there it will be another two hours drive on Cebu to go to a boat that will bring me to my final destination for the next two weeks, Malapascua, a small island where I will be conducting a PADI IDC.

In the meantime, I will keep the updates for Samui going as good as I can, with daily updates 'fresh from the farm or source'!
