Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 9^th December – 15^th December 2019

Sunday morning and time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 9th December – 15th December 2019. This time coming from Surat Thani where I just participated in a half marathon.

On Koh Samui it's nice and sunny. Not exactly what you expect this time of the year. It's already 29C at 10am on the island. Get ready for a hot one!

On the other hand, Surat Thani is having overcast and it looks like it will rain at some stage today. Current temperature at 10am is also 29C

My half marathon went well. Although the total race distance on my GPS is 21.64km, I managed what I wanted to do. Run a half marathon under one hour and forty minutes. I did just that with a handful of seconds to spare. Unfortunately I only place 7th in my age group 50-59 out of 177. There were only 5 trophies per age category.

Last week was nothing like how it should be or can be expected during this time of the year. We has plenty of sunshine, partially cloudy skies and no rain. Not really your typical rainy season on Koh Samui and the surrounding islands. Maximum temperatures reached 31C. The minimum temperature got stuck at 21C at night. Very nice and agreeable weather last week indeed!

Picking the BIB number yesterday at Koh Lamphu in Surat Thani. This morning I participated in the Surat Thani half marathon. I achieved a bew personal best on the half marathon distance.

The forecast for next week is looking really good. Partially clouded to blue skies. Maybe an occasional tropical shower. The very nice weather keeps holding on. Enjoy your stay on the island before it will get busy around Christmas and New Year.

Ir's early Sunday morning and time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 21st October – 27th October 2019. My family and myself are in Surat Thani for the weekend. The long slow Distance run is in the bag. Off to new adventures later today on the mainland. Tomorrow school begins again.

On Koh Samui there's a partially clouded sky this morning. Current temperature at 8am is 32C. Look forward to a nice and warm day with sunshine. A surprise tropical shower may be in the cars in some parts of the island.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 21st October – 27th October 2019

Until 29th October the floating temple boats or Rua Phra will be on display until at least tonight. If you haven't been yet, make sure to visit. It's well worth a visit.

Last week saw an improvement to the rainy week before that. The beginning of the week still saw some hard rain. At the end of the week we had a few strong showers, but nothing too serious. We also had plenty of sunshine and warm to hot days! Maximum temperatures reached 33C towards the end of the week and the minimum didn't drop below 24C at night.

The forecast for next week is looking good. We're heading into November on a high! Next week forecasts predict mostly sunny to partially cloudy skies. An occasional tropical shower may hit you, but that shouldn't last much longer than an hour or so.

A nice way to end October. Next month is most likely the wettest month in the year. Samui's rainy season is about to hit sometime next month.

For next week though, enjoy your stay on the island and have a look around. There's plenty to discover.

It's cloudy but dry and the current temperature at 7.30am is 29C.

It's durian season! We're in the midst of it. Nowadays I love durian, especially the Mong Thong variation. In my ealry days in Thailand, I thought they smelled horrible, and I barely tasted them. Nowadays, when I smell them, I want to know where they are so I can indulge in them. There's a reason they're called 'king of the fruits'! How about you, do you like durian? Or do you think they smell like rotten shoes? This picture was taken at the Maenam morning market. Well worth a visit by the way!

Last week saw a very nice week when we talk about the weather. Lots of sunshine and warm temperatures. In the north eastern corner of the island where we live, we didn't really have any rain. Other parts of the island might have had some rain yesterday.

Maximum temperatures last week got up to 35C on Wednesday. Tuesday night the minimum temperature last week dropped to 21C.

A sop in downtown Surat Thani city. It's near the Tapee river on a Sunday morning market. Plenty of 'pinto' for sale. This is how you take food on the road, to the temple, to work or you name it and it stays warm. Nice walk through the narrow sois and look at all the Chinese style shops.

For next week we're looking at lots of strong wind, especially towards next weekend. Plenty of tropical showers are also predicted. It might get fairly wet during this last August week of the year. Hopefully we will get a little bit of sunshine in as well. Nonetheless, the island needs the water to stock up ground water levels.

Sunday morning again and time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 17th December – 23rd December 2018. This time originating from Surat Thani city. Busy weekends this month so far!

It's blue skies and sunny around Koh Samui with a current temperature of 32C at 10.30am. The rainy season is behind us now. Enjoy the sun and crazy hot temperatures for December!

In Surat Thani it is very similar to Koh Samui. Blue skies and in the lower thirties Celsius.

This morning I ran my last race of the year at Central Plaza in Surat Thani and placed 5th in my age category 50-59 years. Later today we're heading back home again to Koh Samui.

Last week the weather on Koh Samui turned from monsoon and rain into dry and sunny with blue skies! As of Thursday, the day after I got back from Phuket, the weather changed for the better. Maximum temperatures ranged from 26C to 33C and minimum temperature 24C. Occasionally there was some strong wind.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 17th December – 23rd December 2018; Earlier this week I was still on Phuket. For the first time I was able to visit the new Central Floresta. This brand new shopping department is opposite the Central Festival and they are connected by a walking bridge

The forecast for next week is looking good. Tomorrow it will still be very sunny. Tuesday and Wednesday more cloudy with possibly some rain. The rest of  next week and the coming weekend should be cloudy but dry. Enjoy this nice weather at the end of the year!

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 26^th November – 2^nd December 2018 

It's Sunday morning and this blog we have a look at the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 26th November – 2nd December 2018.

It's nice and fairly sunny with a current temperature of 30C on Koh Samui but it feels already much closer to cooking temperature once you're out in the sun.

I find myself for the third consecutive weekend in Surat Thani. Yesterday my wife's niece graduated from the Tapee University in Surat Thai, so the whole family came over. 

This morning a ran a 10k mini marathon race. I also ran 3km before and 5.5km after after the race to get my training quota in. 

Now it's time to enjoy the weekend market in Surat Thai and a few other shopping opportunities that my wife wants to visit!

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 26th November – 2nd December 2018, The big Seatran ferry # 10 at the Nathon pier, ready to unload. The last three weekends I was in Surat Thani, including this current weekend. Lots of Seatran travelling and use. Tuesday I will be on the road again, off to Phuket to start a PADI IDC come Wednesday,

Last week was a nice week, with plenty of good weather and sunshine. Two days had rain, towards the end of the week but the weekend was nice again. Maximum temperatures reached 34C and minimum temperatures reached 24C.

Another very good week for a rainy season! Mild and fairly sunny! Keep it coming!

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 26th November – 2nd December 2018; Surat Thani flat bottom boat trip at the weekend market. This market and the boat tour are located just over the bridge at the city shrine, a few kilometers inland at a local temple or wat. The bot ride is 20Baht per person and well worth it. A nice and relaxed ride for about 15-20 minutes in a nice natural environment with a canopy made by water palm trees. The market is also nice and worthwhile visiting. Some good food to be had!

The forecast for next week is looking good for tomorrow. After that be prepared for a couple of showers each day and some hard wind and wet days over the weekend.

Another Sunday morning, this time in Surat Thani but it's time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 18th June – 24th June 2018.

It's nice and sunny over Koh Samui this morning with just a few clouds and a 29C temperature at 9am.

As already mentioned, we are in Surat Thani town this morning, where I participated in a 'Run Against Drugs' super fun run over 6.9km. It's also 29C here in Surat Thani at 9am and we're about to move to Sichon where we will be visiting a temple. There may be a blog coming soon about this fairly dpecial temple.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 18th June – 24th June 2018; The Seatran pier with one of the storms coming up last week,

Last week saw a mixed week, with some hefty storms and very strong wind, early in the week. There wasn't so much rain but some very hard wind was blowing over the island and the surrounding ocean.

As of Friday it was back to sunshine and hih humidity and it was 'sticky hot' weather again.

Maximum temperatures last week ranged from 29C to 34C.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 18th June – 24th June 2018; Today we will be visiting a temple in Sichon, near Nakhon Si Thammarat. It's famous for the chicken statues that are placed next to the roads, leading to the temple. The statues are about two and a half meters tall and can be found with increasing numbers the nearer you get to the temple. An amazing view and sight, with sometimes clusters of a dozen or two giant chicken statues.

The forecast is looking good for next week, with a nice and relaxed ending of June. Plenty of sunshine and partially clouded skies should be reigning over Koh Samui. Maybe there is an isolated shower during the week, but nothing too serious.

Goodbye to February 2017

Goodbye to February 2017

It's the end of this very short month and time to say 'Goodbye to February 2017'. Besides 2008 and last year, February is usually a very nice month around Koh Samui and this year was no exception.

After the horrendous flood problems in December 2016 and January, just last month, it was time for a change and a break and Koh Samui got the break.

The month was nice and sunny with most days partially clouded skies with lots of blue and sunshine in it. The island could warm up again and recover from the damage done by two consecutive massive rain and flood periods. Lots of roads were fixed very quickly and it for the visitors it was a great time to hang out at the various Samui beaches, do some sightseeing and in general enjoy the atmosphere on our beloved island.
There were only a few times when we had rain, mostly in the evenings or night anyway and yesterday saw a stormy day, with lots of rain and cloudy sky all day long. Today is already looking better again and the sun is out and about again, to send February off in good fashion.

Goodbye to February 2017; The Naval Base in Lipa Noi was hosting a two night camping trip of our son's school and all kids in his school year went on the trip. This is usually not an area open for public but on this occasion, parents were allowed to visit their kids on the premises. This big anchor can be found there as well.

It was a busy month for me, with completing a PADI IDC program on Koh Lanta and with just a travel day in-between, starting and completing another PADI IDC program on Phuket, before I could finally make it back home at the end of the month, having been on the road for almost a complete month. Both programs also saw some PADI Specialty Instructor training, which included a good couple of days diving!

Goodbye to February 2017; Near the finish line of this years edition of the Surat Thani marathon, which I completed in a new personal best of 3 hours and 43 minutes, coming in twelfth all over and second in my age category, although only 78 participants started.

Once back on Koh Samui, I enjoyed time being together with my family again, going out for dinner and lunch and slowly start running again after the Surat Thani marathon.

Now it's time to look forward to next month, March 2017, which usually is also a very nice month with plenty of sunshine. See you around on Koh Samui!

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 17^th - 20^th February, 2017

Today's weather;

It's a lovely sunny day over Koh Samui with a few clouds and it looks like it will stay like this for the remainder of the day. Current temp at 7am is 26C

Here at Kata on Phuket, where I will be for another two days, it's also nice and sunny with a current temp at 7am of 27C

Yesterday the PADI IE for February 2017 was completed and all of my candidates passed with flying colors. Job well done and congratulations are in place.

I was in Surat Thani yesterday where I participated for second consecutive year in the Surat Thani marathon and came in 12th overall and second in my age category (50-59), well chuffed with that result. I ran 42.17km in 3:43'31 or a 5'18 pace.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 17th - 20th February, 2017; The Natural Museum in Wat Lamai, well worth a visit, but be careful, in that corner of the temple there's a brownish colored dog that likes to bite visitors. You have been warned. 

Last week Koh Samui had good weather, since 16th February. Only one evening saw a light shower and all other days were sun and glorious. It's good again to be on Koh Samui and enjoy the beaches and all the things that Koh Samui has to offer. Max temps ranged from 30C to 32C with cool morning temps of around 25 to 27C

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 17th - 20th February, 2017; Kata on Phuket, next to PADI CDC Center 'Dive Asia' and the Kata Big Rock scuba training pool, the steep hills that are on the Northern side of Patak road, leading through the mountains. Great for hill running and training

The forecast for the next seven is looking good, partially clouded skies all week long with an occasional shower. Great weather to enjoy Koh Samui.

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 24th October, 2016

Today's weather;

It's cloudy over Koh Samui with still a fair bit of wind and it looks like it will stay mostly cloudy today, with the sun possibly breaking through occasionally but I expect it to stay dry. Current temp at 8am is 28C

This morning I'm in Surat Thani town, en route to Phuket. We had dinner with a whole bunch of old school friends of my wife and early morning I drove my family down to the ferry, back to Koh Samui. In an hour or so I will hit the road again and drive down to Phuket.

That's us yesterday, waiting at the Seatran port in Nathon, to board a ferry heading for Donsak on the mainland. Sailing was smooth and there were no waves to speak of.

Yesterday saw a partially cloudy day over Koh Samui with the win slowing down a bit and it stayed dry all day long. Max temp reached 33C

The Saan Lak Mueang or city pillar in Surat Thani town. Lak mueang (หลักเมือง) are city pillars found in most cities of Thailand. Usually housed in a shrine (ศาลหลักเมือง) which is also believed to house Chao Pho Lak Mueang (เจ้าพ่อหลักเมือง), the city spirit deity. They are held in high esteem by their citizens. 

The forecast for Koh Samui and the next ten days is looking good, especially this time of the year. The wind should be dropping each day no and by tomorrow afternoon it should pretty much have gone. Most days are expected to be cloudy to partially cloudy with some tropical showers towards next weekend. The monsoon that looked like it had arrived, seems to be still relatively far away.

The Pirate Park, water park in Surat Thani

A visit to the The Pirate Park, water park in Surat Thani was in place. After our recent visit to Bangkok, we booked a night at Sabye D hotel in Surat Thani and spent the night, but first it was straight from the night train into the water park.

Straight ain't the right word though, we had to wait two and a half hours before the water park opened at 10am. The hotel room wasn't available yet and almost nothing else is open in town. It was a bit of a challenge but we managed,

The water park is located on the 417, leading out of Surat Thani towards the airport, after the second PTT gas station on your left hand side. Can't miss it, there are big signs and it's pretty much straight on the road.

There's plenty of parking space available outside but non is sun covered, your car will be steaming hot once you get back to it.

The entrance fee was really good, 250,-THB for adults and 150,-THB for children under 120 cm, added up to 900.-THB for the whole family, can't beat that!

Once inside, to your left are lockers, showers and bathrooms. There's almost no shade to be found, some shelters are set up with chairs inside and there's a big areas to your right at the entrance where small food stalls can be found, but only two or so were open yesterday which made excellent seating fro our group, out of the beaming sun.

This is a bit of a problem, that there's almost no shade to be found. You will burn really quickly, so plenty of sun lotion on your body is required. Best is to act like the Thais and cover up your body with long sleeved shirts and at least knee length shorts.

The other problem I had was that not all of the attractions were cooled down by water, which could cause burn wounds due to rubbing the plastic cover of the attractions and very hot foot soles by walking over very hot rubber.

The attractions are air filled, like the bouncy castles at local fairs here in Thailand. That partly explains the cheap entrance fees, but it comes with a few downsides, as explained before. I burned my knee and some attractions were just plain uncomfortable due to the plastic or rubber being way too hot and not being cooled down by water.

The actual attractions boil down to two big pools for children, one just to play and with some slides and one big pool with small paddle boats.

The other two main attractions are two lengthy obstacle courses, one for people taller than 150cm with deep water surrounding the course and one for children with shallow water.

Both courses are challenging though and difficult to complete. On both courses there seemed to be plenty of staff at hand that could help out in case of problems.

As already mentioned though, some of the rides are not cooled down enough or sprinkled by water so the plastic cover becomes steaming hot and you burn your feet easily. Some parts of the obstacle course have the same problem and it is rather very uncomfortable.

Trying to complete the courses can also be very tiring, pending on how serious or relaxed your attempt to completing a course is.

Although there was a big, roof covered area, hence shay but still hot, with typical Thai small food stands, only two out of ten stands were open. There's also an air conditioned restaurant on the premises, but we didn't check out the options available and there's a coffee shop that sells shakes and is part of the park, but is located outside of the park and you need to get a big, fat stamp at the exit so you can get back in again. This is the only place where fruit shakes are being sold, and although various tastes are on the menu, a mixed fruit shake is not an option! Very strange indeed.

When we visited, a week day but during a long Thai school holiday, it was not busy at all, I wonder how busy it gets during a weekend, probably a bit busier.

All in all I'm glad we visited, but I don't see us return that quickly. Too many small things that were missing that once added up, made it for a mediocre experience. The kids loved it though.

Today's weather;

It's cloudy over Koh Samui and there are just a few openings in the cloud cover to let the sun shine through. It should be another warm day again though with possibly a very isolated shower. Current temp at 7am is 30C

We are here in Surat Thani at the last leg of a weeks long travelling and ready to head for the ferry soon. Home at last again. The sky over Surat Thani is also heavily covered by clouds with just a few blue openings. Current temp at 7m is 26C
This morning we visited the Pirate Park, a water park near the center of town.

Yesterday saw once more a very warm day around Koh Samui with a max temp of 34C

A Chinese temple opposite the pier in Surat Thani, where the night boats for Koh Tao and Koh Phangan leave. During the evening there's a small street restaurant in front of the temple. Next to the pier is small night market with food/restaurants and fruit stalls. There's also one vendor that sells Thai sweets who is so popular that people queue each night in order to buy the sweets.

The forecast predicts a light breeze for the next ten days with some cloud cover, some days heavier, some days lighter. It will still remain warm over the island.

Today's weather;

The sky over Koh Samui is slightly hazy and there are some isolated clouds this morning. It may clear up a bit later during the day. Current temp at 7am is 30C

We're travelling towards Surat Thani where we should arrive shortly. We left Bangkok yesterday evening at 19.30, on time and we're bound to arrive very soon in Surat Thani. It's nice and sunny and we're enjoying the view from the train. I had a very good nights sleep, much better than expected! Current temp at 7am is 26C in Surat Thani.

Yesterday saw a very hot day around Koh Samui, the max temp jumped up to 35C

The forecast is looking good, the heavy cloud formations that were predicted for after the weekend have more or less disappeared, it may be partially cloudy at times and the warm and dry weather continues for another ten days at least.

Today's weather;

A few clouds are in Koh Samui's sky this very early in the morning. It looks like it's going to be warm again today. Current temp at 6am is 28C

Am about to leave Surat Thani, where I spent the night, to catch a ferry back home to Koh Samui. Two days ago, the only available ferry was today's 7.30am ferry. It's still dark here under a starry sky. Current temp at 6am is 28C

The forecast for the next ten days predicts some clouds and possibly some rain this coming Wednesday. It will still be hot every day and the sun will be out and about.

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 14th February, 2016

Today's weather;

It's partially cloudy around Koh Samui but there is still enough sunshine to make it a nice day and it looks like it will stay like this today. Current temp at 10am is 30C

It's a later than usual update today, since we just got back to our hotel room from the Surat Thani marathon in which I participated. It's nice and sunny here and warming up! Current temp at 10am is 'only' 29C, it feels a lot warmer.

The marathon went ok, I finished 42.8km in 4 hours and 17 minutes, which is within the time range I trained for, although it's at the outer limits. I did manage to finish as tenth in my age category, which earned my a nice trophy! This was my 3rd marathon ever and I smashed my previous personal best with half an hour. It was tough though, especially the last five km's!

Yesterday saw a nice and mostly sunny day around Koh Samui with some clouds and a max temp of 32C

The forecast predicts very sunny days ten days, although mysteriously there may be rain as well. Tuesday and Wednesday may see some very strong wind.

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 1st November, 2015

Today's weather;

It's already 9pm when I'm writing this update, the reason is that it's been a hectic day. It started out really good with a great half marathon race in Surat Thani town, but when I got back to my hotel room, my hard disk had crashed and the only thing I saw was the black screen of death. Long story short, I had to buy a new computer/laptop and it took me a while to buy it, drive down to Khao Lak, where I start a PADI IDC tomorrow and get my new laptop up and running. 

Here I am at last.

I'm going to keep it short, it rained a lot and hard on Samui during the morning and it didn't get very warm. Current temp at 9pm is 26C

Yesterday saw a bit of rain again on Samui, during the afternoon. Max temp reached 31C

The forecast for the next ten days is a perfect mixed bag, cloudy and sunny moments will be coming on and off with rain showers possible at any time.

Food on Wheels; Surat Thani school knowledge tests

Earlier this month our two oldest children had some form of knowledge competition in the city of Surat Thani on the mainland with their school and all other schools in the province.

Topics were varied and our daughter competed in 'science' and she came in 4th place in her category with her schoolmates and our son was competing in 'computer graphic' and came in third in his category with his schoolmates.

The classic; Fruit

The vent was held at various schools throughout the city and it was busy at all schools involved, with provincial schools attending from all over the province of Surat Thani.

The two schools that we visited, had food options in copious amounts, as typical in Thailand, especially with such a big gathering of people in one location and all schools had plenty of 'Food on Wheels' options.

The Mix; Drinks and junk food

The assortment was varied, as you can expect at busy events, but also typical, most of it is not of great quality or health value. Lots of fast food and lots of deep fried and lots of sugar. msg and you name it!

The classic fruit cart is probably the healthiest option, as long as you can stay away from the sugar with chili in it! How much I love the food on wheels culture, for health reasons I don't participate in or rather buy many of the offered options and choices.

Drinks in all kinds of variation

It's great to see every time though and the variety on offer keeps it interesting. Your average European health official would have a sheer heart attack, just looking at the carts and the displays, let alone checking and controlling the quality of the food on offer! 

Fair enough, in the days I ate lots of the displayed food and also my children, so far never got sick from eating food on offer from these carts.
