Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 4^th June – 10^th June 2018 

Sunday afternoon, after a busy day so far, it's time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 4th June – 10th June 2018.

It has been cloudy all day long, which was nice for the Bangkok Air Koh Samui half marathon which I participated in this morning. Start was at 5.15am, still being pitch dark and I managed to come in second in my age group of 50+ and 14th all over out of 300 participants. It was nice and cool for an early morning run.

Current temperature at 2pm is 33C and still cloudy but dry.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 4th June – 10th June 2018; Five days ago these five baby cats were born at our house.

Last week saw quite a bit of rain around Koh Samui, it was dry only from Tuesday to Thursday. All other days saw rain in varying strengths and amounts. Maximum temperatures ranged from 30C to 32C but with a fairly high humidity.

From Thursday through Saturday our family spent a few days in Bangkok. Some busy days and times for us but we got everything sorted that needed to be done. It was tiring though and we're glad to be back home again.

For next week Monday afternoon and Tuesday may see some rain and possibly next weekend again. Wednesday and through to the weekend there may be some strong wind. Some typical light monsoon minded weather.

Goodbye to January 2018

Goodbye to January 2018

It's 31st day of this month and time to say Goodbye to January 2018. After having missed the December 2017 Goodbye blog, we're back on track.

It's nice and fairly sunny under a partially clouded sky with a current temp of 30.1C at 10am.

The weather this month wasn't that great. 12 out of the 31 days saw rain and we had some really hard rain early on in the month. There were also a few days with flash floods, but the flash floods never lasted too long.
A mediocre to average January an d nothing like it was one year ago, when Koh Samui endured some serious long and hard rain with lots of flash floods.

Maximum temperatures ranged from 28C to 33C.

Especially the last couple of days were nice and a bit of an idea of what February most likely is going to be. It's also becoming warmer again, little by little, day by day.

The forecast for next month is a few days including the weekend might see a little bit of rain but in general it should clear up after that and be nice and enjoyable with plenty of sun.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 28^th August – 3^rd September, 2017 

It's Sunday morning and time to have a look at Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 28th August – 3rd September, 2017 and see how things were.

We have a sunny sky already during all morning, this Sunday and although the quicksilver tells us it's 'only' 30.4C at 10.40am, it feels a lot warmer, closing in on 38C!

Better be prepared for a hot and sticky day unless you can find a breeze or stay in an aircon controlled room or area.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 28th August – 3rd September, 2017; Food options at the Plai Laem market, some frogs and eels. Not for the faint hearted gourmets!

On most maps this market is listed as Bang Rak market, but Plai Laem starts after the bridge and that's exactly where the market is located!

Last week saw a bit of a mixed bag with mostly partially clouded skies, an occasional tropical shower and temperatures ranging between 30C and 34C. 

Next week looks like it will be dry, possibly a rare tropical shower and mostly partially clouded skies. Warm and sunny might be an option as well! Enjoy your time on our island, it's not as busy anymore as a week ago and possibly a little bit more enjoyable with more space around you.

Box jelly fish update in July 2017

Here's a short Box jelly fish update in July 2017.

The most interesting news is that two stinger protection nets have been placed at two different beaches on Koh Samui. One net has been placed in front of Lamai Wanta Beach Resort at Lamai beach.

The other net has been placed in front of Ozo at Chaweng beach.
This is a great start and I can only hope that this initiative will be followed by plenty of other hotels around the island.

Providing the nets will be well maintained and checked on a regular base, they should give real good protection against box jelly fish encounters and incidents.

Other great news is that over the last two weeks, a well known box jelly fish researcher has visited Koh Samui, for the second time. Meet Angel Yanagihara from Hawaii in the USA. She is a PhD research professor and trained as a biochemist. She has conducted and completed research relating to box jelly fish in various parts around the world over the last twenty or so years.
This time she came to Samui as an invited expert to provide training in field ecology approaches and direct activity assays to Thai and other international partners.

This is the second time she visits the Koh Samui archipelago and this time around she had a very successful visit. 

Angel and her team caught a 'Morbakka' box jelly fish at Koh Tao and at Lamai beach she caught a potentially deadly 'Chironex' species of box jelly fish, the species that could well have been injuring people over the last few years around Koh Samui and Koh Phangan.

Box jelly fish update in July 2017; A life guard station near Lamai Wanta Beach Resort. Unfortunately this initiative that seemed to have started out so well, has not gone very far. The station on the picture seems to be never staffed. Especially now in high season and potentially with a high concentration of box jelly fish around, there should be more posts and staff to man them.

The box jelly fish season is about to heat up with many known and registered incidents happening between July-August until roughly October over the last couple of years. This can be caused due to the life span and life cycle of the 'Chironex' box jelly fish around Koh Samui waters.
Proof of box jelly fish already being around is the adult 'Chironex' box jelly fish species that Angel caught last week at Lamai beach.

Incidents have also been reported and registered outside of this period but the mentioned period between July and October does see an increase in incidents.

For me, as a self educated, local box jelly fish interested person, it was a great opportunity to meet up with Angel and get to hear some details about her various research programs. We met the day before she was about to leave back to Hawaii. Due to my busy travel plans, I'm glad we were able to meet at all. 

Hopefully she will find funding to return to Thailand and assist in the box jelly fish prevention programs and projects around Thailand. Although progress has been made, a lot of improvement and awareness can still be achieved.

The Thai government doesn't seem to want to hide the presence and issues of box jelly fish in Thai waters, now it's time to expand on this and get more projects off the ground. It's an ongoing process!

For all the beach lovers, during the mentioned period of July through to October, be careful when you enter the water, ideally wear stinger suits or swim in roped off areas.

In case of a box jelly fish incident, just remember, the four most important things to do when stung by a box jelly fish;

1 - Call for help, on Koh Samui that means call the Rescue service at 1669

2 - Make sure if the victim needs CPR

3 - Treat the stings and wounds with copious amounts of vinegar

4 -  Transport to a medical facility

On a separate note, as added as an extra comment by Angel; vinegar is an essential first aid step to prevent additional nemaotcyst discharge and venom injection but it is not an authentic "treatment " in that it does not enter the blood stream, remove venom or inactivate the venom injected. Heat does authentically reduce venom activity and as such is an actual treatment. 45C for 45 min reduced the Samui Chironex venom activity by over 90%. Ice made it worse than room temp treatment.  These results are similar to my peer reviewed published findings in Chironex species elsewhere.

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 3^rd February, 2017

Today's weather;

It's mostly cloudy over land, with at some places some dark clouds and possibly some rain and over the ocean it's partially cloudy with the sun coming out around Koh Samui this early in the day. There may be another shower today and the sun may break through at times as well/ Showers should be sort and relatively light, if at all. Las night there were also some showers. Current temp at 7am is 26C

On Koh Lanta we have a partially cloudy sky and possibly a sunny day ahead of us, providing the sun can burn the clouds away. Current temp at 7am is 25C

Yesterday saw a partially cloudy day with plenty of sun around the island and it was fairly warm with the max temp reaching 32C

The forecast for the next seven days has changed slightly with some rather unexpected rain predicted for today but the rest of the weekend and next week should be sunny to partially cloudy again and in general is showing a very pleasant weather forecast. Today's weather;

It's dry and mostly cloudy over Koh Samui this morning with a few breaks in the cloud cover and I expect it to break up a bit more and it could well turn into a fairly nice and dry day with a bit of sunshine. Current temp at 7am is 26C

Water run off at the walking street bridge in Chaweng. Still plenty of run off from hills and other kinds of water that need be taken care of. Everything is back to normal though and these are the last reminders of the recent floods Koh Samui had to endure.

At Haad Yao on Koh Phangan we also have a mostly cloudy sky but it seems we have more blue spots in the sky and here we also have a nice day in the making. Current temp at 7am is 25C

Yesterday saw a very wet morning with plenty of showers but during the afternoon the sun came back out of hiding again and we had a nice and lovely afternoon around Koh Samui and Koh Phangan. Max temp reached 28C

We encountered this baby whale shark at Sail Rock yesterday. It was about 2.5 meters long and seemed to enjoy the company of the divers and the boats and it stuck around for the whole dive day and a bit more, since divers who arrived there after we left also saw it

The forecast for the next seven days is looking good, a slight increase and possibly some rain tomorrow but after that partially clouded skies and no rain predicted until shortly before new year a few showers are expected. A lot can change weather wise in a positive way during this time frame, but this is looking good! Enjoy a sunny holiday season!

Box jellyfish on Chaweng Beach

This recent Monday this beautiful but very dangerous species of a Morbakka box jelly fish species was caught on Chaweng beach in around 80 cm of water. Potentially this species can even be lethal.

A day later two more samples of the same Morbakka box jelly fish species were caught again at the middle of Chaweng Beach.

The box jelly fish season is not over yet and caution is urged when swimming at the Koh Samui beaches, especially at the East and Northern beaches. The season typically runs from August to December or January. However, that doesn't mean that outside of the 'season', there will be no box jelly fish around. Chances of an encounter are already very low but are even lower out of season.

Most of the hotels around Koh Samui now have awareness and prevention measures in place. As already mentioned, chances of being stung are low but it's good to be aware and know what to do in the unlikely event you witness a box jelly fish incident.

At Lamai beach there are now beach and life guards located and all other beaches should have warning signs erected and hotels and resorts should have vinegar stations on the beaches with plenty of vinegar back up. There's a very pro-active attitude among the hotels and local government on Koh Samui, of which I regularly made updates and posts on this and my dive blog.

In case of a box jelly fish sting, be aware of the following guidelines;

-make sure that the rescuer is safe from toxic jelly jellyfish

-bring the injured person out of the sea to a safe place (like the beach or boat)

-call for help or call 1669. Stay with the injured person because they can become unconscious within minutes

-calm down the injured person, to prevent more toxic stingers from firing off

-DO NOT RUB THE WOUND

-check for live signs, if needed give CPR (when unconscious) and treat the affected body parts with plenty of vinegar (DO NOT USE FRESH WATER)

If no vinegar is available, use soft drinks.

This post is to help you to be aware when you witness a box jelly fish incident. Help your self by wearing stinger suits or full body protective clothing.

Today's weather;

It's a second day in a row very cloudy over Koh Samui during the morning and probably for most of today it is going to remain cloudy with possibly some sun beams during the late afternoon. It should stay dry although it feels rain is in the air and thee's a stiff breeze. Current temp at 7am is 28C

Our newest family member, Jim! He was added about a month ago to out home in Plai Laem and he is now about three and a half months old and he's doing fine! Exploring the garden, ripping up our shoes and just enjoying each day.

Yesterday saw mostly a very cloudy day with just a rare glance at a sunbeam or two but it stayed dry, until 1am, when there was a bit of a downpour. Max temp reached 32C

The forecast for the next ten days predicts fairly cloudy skies with a stiff breeze and an occasional tropical shower. Not exactly the nice September weather you would hope for and expect.

There's a thin cloud layer over Koh Samui this morning and the sun is having a very hard time getting through. It's supposed to remain cloudy combined with a strong wind today. Current temp at 7am is 29C

Yesterday saw a nice day with plenty of sunshine and a fair breeze all day long and a max temp of 33C

The forecast remains looking good, today and tomorrow should be the last days of clouds and wind and as of Sunday the sky should clear up, the wind drop essentially and possibly a short typical shower here and there.

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 17^th August, 2016

Today's weather;

There's a very thin cloud layer over Koh Samui this morning with the sun struggling to get through but not very successful at the moment. The strong wind has momentarily dropped a bit but should be back later today. It should remain dry today although mostly cloudy. Current temp at 7am is 29C

A bird singing contest near Bang Rak, a very popular activity and form of entertainment and some of the birds go for lots of money when they win prices. Popular with many local people but also around the country as a whole

Yesterday stayed dry but had all kind of weather variations, from sunny to dark cloudy and wind in all kind of strengths. Max temp reached a stunning 34C

The forecast for the next ten days changed again ever so slightly again, still mostly cloudy and still with strong winds, occasionally, like today, with storm like winds but with a lot less rain expected.

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 12^th August, 2016

Today's weather;

It's partially cloudy to mostly cloudy this morning, occasionally a bit of sunshine shines through the clouds but I expect it to be rather cloudy today with a fair breeze. Current temp at 7am is 28C

Today is also the birthday of Queen Sirikit who was born in 1932 and it also means that today Mothers day is celebrated in Thailand.

This looks like migratory birds over Plai Laem, I could stop the car just in time to take a shot when they were about to disappear. They were big birds, fighting their way against the wind and it was a large flock.

Yesterday saw a dry day but with a very strong wind at times. It was nice and partially sunny  in the morning but as the day progressed, it become slowly cloudier. Max temp reached 32C

The forecast changed slightly again and not necessarily for the better, more clouds are expected during the next ten days with less change of sunshine and the strong winds will remain, at times with storm like strength. Around the weekend of 20th August we may see the rain join in as well. A very unusual August so far and it looks like it will continue for a while.

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 22nd June, 2016

Today's weather;

It's fairly cloudy with a nice breeze and there are also some blue spots in the sky over Koh Samui this morning and it should remain cloudy and dry for the remainder of the day, pending on how much the sun is able to heat up. In contrast to the prediction, we may also end up with a fairly sunny day. Current temp at 7am is 28C

A very popular pastime on Koh Samui, collecting cockles. This can only be done at certain times of the year, pending on the tides. During these periods, one can sometimes collect in the morning or sometimes in the evening, pending the water height. Recently it has been good for cockle collecting! My wife alone got a few dozen kilos during recent weeks. The cockles are either being sold or eaten at home. This picture is taken near Big Buddha, one of the very popular places around the island for collecting

Yesterday it started out very cloudy with rain in the air and a bit of drizzle came down but nothing too bad. Around noon the sun broke out and slowly started to evaporate the clouds over Koh Samui and it became rather warm again. Max temp reached 33C

The forecast for the next ten days shows that we should have plenty of cloud cover with an occasional sunny break but on the other hand thre's also an option for some drizzle or a tropical shower. This is more like your average June weather, compared to the very sunny and hot first half of this month.

There's a partially cloudy sky over Koh Samui this morning and it looks like it will be a fairly sunny and hot today. Current temp at 7am is 28C

Yesterday at both Tesco Lotus outlets on the island, there were dinosaurs visiting, this was taken at the Chaweng outlet around noon, Great fun for the kids and some scared ones to boost

Yesterday saw a fairly sunny and hot day with some surprise drizzle in the late afternoon. Max temp reached 34C

The forecast for the next ten days didn't change a lot, mostly cloudier skies with a bit of wind and an occasional tropical shower but also enough sunshine to make it nice days. Rather typical June weather.

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 15th April, 2016

Today's weather;

It's still a bit hazy over Koh Samui this early morning but it looks like another sunny and hot day is in the making. Current temp at 6am is already 27C

In a moment I will move over to Phuket for one or two nights, sorting out some business related things and than I will be on my way home again, at last!

At the moment however, I'm still on Koh Lanta, after a very successful PADI IE for my candidates yesterday. It's blue skies in the making here with a few scattered, small clouds. Current temp at 6am is 24C

It was steaming hot yesterday on Koh Samui, the temperature is still rising, little by little and yesterday saw a max temp of 36C

The forecast for Koh Samui hasn't changed too much, as of tomorrow we should have cloudy but dry skies until mid next week. It's however not a guarantee that it will cool down!

Goodbye to March 2016

Goodbye to March 2016

It's the end of the current month and it's time to say Goodbye to March 2016. 

The weather was excellent this month with only a strong shower during the first day of this month and after that it was mostly sunny and slowly but steadily it started to heat up, little by little, day by day. We had some nice cooling wind the last couple of days of this month and it was partially cloudy at times, but it remained dry all month long except for the 1st March.

Water is needed though, to replenish the ground water levels, but at the moment, there's no rain in sight.

This month was a busy month for me where I was on the road most of the time. First I was on Koh Phangan for a PADI IDC and now I'm on Koh Lanta where I started a PADI IDC yesterday.

We visited the 'U Koh Madsum' resort on Koh Madsum which we really enjoyed and I also presented a Box jelly fish awareness and prevention presentation there, for the local hotel staff.

Last weekend I participated for the third time in the Koh Samui Midnight Run, which was held for the fourth time and I came second in my age group in a new personal best time in this race.

We had dinner at the 'U Koh Madsum' and our favorite Japanese restaurant on the island at Kobori in Maenam.

A busy and enjoyable month and it's time to start looking forward to April 2016. See you all next month!

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 28th February, 2016

Today's weather;

It's grey and cloudy this morning over Koh Samui and although it's dry at the moment, it feels like rain is in the air. It may clear up later during the day but I'm not too sure since the prediction is not really holding up at the moment. Current temp at 7am is 27C

Yesterday saw some hard rain during the morning again and it cleared ip a little bit during the afternoon. Max temp reached only 28C

The forecast is looking fairly good for the next ten days, but the forecast is also a bit shaky at the moment, it seems. Some rain may be expected Tuesday and Wednesday, providing we have any dry days at all before we get there. It's supposed to clear up after Wednesday and be sunny, we'll have to wait and see.

It's cloudy this morning around Koh Samui and it probably will remain cloudy for the rest of the day with possibly a drizzle. This morning there's a very strong wind blowing. Current temp at 8am is a cool 27C

Yesterday saw a nice morning with some sunshine but the afternoon was cloudy with a max temp of 33C

The forecast predicts a strong wind today and slightly less for tomorrow. It's mostly cloudy until Thursday after which it's supposed to clear up and become sunny again.

Today's weather;

It's partially cloudy over Koh Samui this morning with a few sun rays beaming through the cloud cover. It should clear up more later today although there may also be an afternoon shower. Current temp at 7am is 26C

Yesterday this female and pregnant black whale was beached near Lamai and sadly enough both Mum and baby black whale passed away

Yesterday saw lots of rain, almost all day long. It was a constant stop and go of rain, ranging from a drizzle to hard rain. Max temp reached 30C

The forecast is looking god though, for the next ten days we should have sunnier skies, with a possibility of a shower until next week Tuesday, after that it should be non stop sunny with possibly the wind picking up again during the first weekend of next month.

Today's weather;

There's a solid cloud cover over Koh Samui this morning and there's also a bit of haze still around. Not as much as two days ago though. It will most likely remain cloudy with possibly some rain later today. Current temp at 7am is 26C

Later today we're off for a two day weekend stay at Zazen Boutique Resort & Spa in Bophud for a nice staycation, so expect some updates from there.

The forecast predicts more wind and rain with cloudy skies until net Friday. Over next weekend it may clear up and we may have sunnier skies. It looks like the first signs of the rainy season have arrived though.

Box jelly fish awareness and prevention presentation at Miskawaan in Maenam

Today I gave two box jelly fish awareness and prevention presentation at Miskawaan in Maenam, one in the morning to a group of twelve persons and one in the afternoon to a group of twelve persons. All 24 participants at the box jelly fish awareness and prevention presentation at Miskawaan in Maenam work at Miskawaan. This is a private villa rental group with 11 villas for rent. Ans it's not done yet, this evening I will conduct one more presentation for Koh Samui's dive community and it looks like this may see another twenty or more people attend. Kore to follow on this later.

The morning group

Both presentations consisted of a power point presentation covering the history of box jelly fish in Thailand and specifically the Samui archipelago. Both groups were very inquisitive, interested and interactive. A treat for me, the presenter! A lot of information was given and gladly received. A lot of misconception was cleared and a lot of questions were answered.

The afternoon group

After the presentations, we practiced CPR on two mannequins that I brought along and it was very useful practice and for most participants the first exposure to CPR training.

Besides copious amounts of vinegar being used on box jelly fish wounds, CPR can be a life saver with a box jelly fish in injury, since you can have a cardiac arrest due to the venom.

Both groups also had lots of fun during this practice and we repeated each skill until everybody did it correctly, including 30 compressions and 2 ventilations.

Congratulations to Miskawaan for taking the time out for their staff to have this important training. A good initiative and as a result your staff is now trained to help with and when box jelly fish related accidents occur.

After the sad and unfortunate death of a 20 year old German tourist due to box jelly fish injuries on Lamai beach, there's a lot happening on Koh Samui behind the scenes to prevent box jelly fish incidents, raise awareness about box jelly fish and train people on how to deal with box jelly fish incidents and injuries, including presentations by myself.
