Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 29th September – 6th October 2019

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 29th September – 6th October 2019

Sunday morning, time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 29th September – 6th October 2019.

Long run is in  the bag. I'm glad to be back in training again. Goal is the half marathon come 15th December in Surat Thani. Today was an easy hour and a half run. In the last 600 meters I run off my feet by a dog! The dog was running next to a motorbike, following his owner. He didn't see me and despite evading moves by myself, he hit me full on and swept my legs away. Lucky for me it was on the side of the road and I landed face first in the sand. Very lucky for me that I did not have a single scratch.

On to the weather though, it is partially cloudy this morning. The current temperature at 9.45am is 29C. It looks like a nice day in the making, not too hot but most likely dry.

Last week saw some great weather. All week long sunny skies and lots of sunshine. It was warm but not 'stupid' warm or rather hot as for instance in April. The overall temperatures are dropping and makes for agreeable days. As long as it stays dry. Dry it was this week. Wherever I was on the island last week, I didn't spot a single drop of rain.
Maximum temperatures reached 34C in the beginning of the week. The minimum temperature barely hit 23C. A nice start of the month indeed.

Khow Tanim or the Magic Garden in Baan Namuang. My last visit was almost two months ago. Check it out, it is an interesting place to visit. This is one of the many statue clusters that can be found there.

The forecast for next week is looking great. The weather of this week continues to hold on. Hardly any wind, few clouds and plenty of sunshine. The overall temperature shouldn't be too hot though. October continues to keep up good appearances.
Enjoy your time on our island or in the Samui archipelago next week!

Please do 'like' my Koh Samui blog Facebook page and enjoy the beaches around the island or in front of your hotel or resort and get some well deserved rest and a break.

If you're done resting or need something else to do, there's plenty of things on offer on and around Koh Samui, you can go snorkeling or diving or take a dive course.

Join me in a private dive trip with yours sincerely!

You can also enjoy some of the trips I recommend, like a half day gourmet lunch and snorkeling trip at the Southern part of Koh Samui or a photography trip where you get to see the most photo genetic spots on the island or go for a drinks tasting tour if you like a tipple or two.

You may also opt for a very special dinner experience at The Thai Experience. Behind closed doors, reservation only and a very enjoyable and well worthwhile way of spending an evening on Samui. Authentic Thai food and a great atmosphere. Can highly recommend this experience.

Welcome to September 2019

Welcome to September 2019

It's that time of the month again and we can say a well meant Welcome to September 2019. This month typically carries on the nice and good weather from August. A lot of times it's even better compared to August.
The first couple of days may be windy and with some rain. However, the first weekend of this brand new month looks just splendid. Hardly any clouds and plenty of sunshine.

Welcome to September 2019

Welcome to September 2019

One of the many different statues you can find at the Magic Garden. Towering high above the island, in the middle of durian plantations, you can find the Magic Garden. Turn into the road opposite Wat Khunaram and follow the road up the mountain. Signs will guide you to find the right way. Well worth a vist. First of all for the stunning views from above during the ascent. Secondly, to actually visit the Magic Garden itself.

This month will also two great running events. First of all the one on 15th September. This is part of the much bigger 'Samui Festival' This festival will rage over the island for a couple of days. With live music, a bicycle event, running events and much more.
Secondly come 22nd September the '6th Mad Hatter run'. Unfortunately both events are sold out.
Hope to see you there!

If you're on the island this month, a good choice! Enjoy the island, it's surrounding islands and hopefully good weather. Plus all we have to offer so you feel welcome here.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 12th August – 18th August 2019

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 12th August – 18th August 2019

Sunday morning once more and time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 12th August – 18th August 2019.
Against all odds, I did run the Lamai Charity fun run this morning. The fully monty or distance over 11.6km. I haven't run since two weeks, due to injuries and my time wasn't the best. Still felt good to race again though.

Today is partially cloudy with the sun breaking through most of the time. Nice and warm but not too warm or hot. Current temperature at 10am is 29C.

Last week saw a very nice week around Koh Samui. There was some relatively strong wind at times but nothing to get worries about. The rain kept mostly away from the Plai Laem area in the north eastern corner of the island where we live. Only Friday afternoon saw a short and strong shower. Maximum temperatures last week reached 35C, just one day though. The minimum temperature dropped one night to 22C.
A much better week than originally predicted.

The music combo at the Tarnim Magic Buddha Garden. It's been 10 years since I visited here. It's high up on the mountains. Nicely cuddled in between big durian plantations. Especially this time of the year, you drive through the durians that literally hang over the roads sometimes. The Magic Garden is a place well worth visiting. We were lucky that we caught the garden between two big mountain car trip groups. It was quiet when we were there. You have to time it!

For next week you might as well get the sun lotion out. Hardly any wind, almost no rain. The prediction is looking very good. Hope you enjoy your time on the island. Go out and have a look what Samui has to offer!
There's always time to hang out at the beach! Stay safe and enjoy!

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 29th September, 2015

Today's weather;

It's cloudy with a few blue spots in the sky over Koh Samui this morning, but the cloud layer is thin and I expect the sun to eventually burn some holes in the cloud layer, although that may take a few hours and it should stay dry. Current temp at 7am is 25.9C

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 29th September, 2015

On top of Khow Tanim, the mountain near Baan Namuang, you can see two statues that resemble the statues at the Magic Garden. There's no signage or anything but since they're on opposite sides of the road, it almost looks like a gateway to the Magic Garden.

Yesterday saw a sunny day, much better than expected with a shower around 9pm. Max temp reached 32C

The forecast shows the last bits of wind for today, as of tomorrow we should have partially clouded skies and mostly dry days with some serious sunny days after next weekend.

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 10th August, 2015

Today's weather;

There's a light cloud cover this morning hanging over Koh Samui and I expect this to lift and make some room for a sunnier sky alter this morning. Current temp at 7am is 25.8C

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 10th August, 2015

The small, winding and pittoresque hill road leading you up to Khow Tanim and the Magic Garden

Yesterday started out very cloudy and we had our daily shower around noon with some hard rain. After that is cleared up a little bit but there wasn't too much sun around. Max temp reached 32C

The forecast is looking nice for the next ten days, we should have sunny days with occasionally some wind nad a rare shower. It looks like August is about to shape up.

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 19th July, 2015

Today's weather;

There's a thin cloud layer hanging over Koh Samui this morning but there are also small blue pockets in the cloud layer. Later this morning I expect the sun to break through but during the afternoon we may get some rain. Current temp at 7am is 27C

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 19th July, 2015

The entrance are of Magic Garden on Khow Tanim. The small green building on the left is where you can buy the tickets, the bigger building in the background is a place where you can buy drinks. I can highly recommend a visit to the Magic Garden, including an awe inspiring climb to the top of the hill/mountain of Khow Tanim

Yesterday saw a cloudy start of the day but the sun broke through fairly early and we enjoyed some sunshine in a hazy sky. Around 4pm we had some showers around the island, varying in strength and amount of rain that came down at the various areas around Samui. Chaweng took a nice hit with some very dark clouds passing by. Max temp reached 22.9C

The forecast is predicting mostly cloudy skies for the next ten days but some days we may see some easing up on these clouds and I expect sunshine in various degrees and length of time on almost every day, with always the odd chance of a tropical shower,

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 16th July, 2015

Today's weather;

The sky over Koh Samui is cloudy again, with an occasional small break, in the form of a blue spot.  There may be a little bit of sunshine breaking through later today. Current temp at 7am is 27.2C

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 16th July, 2015

A statue near the entrance to Magic Garden, an attraction well worth checking out , not the least because of it's location on top of Khow Tanim

Yesterday saw mostly a cloudy day with occasional breaks when the sun shone through, It stayed dry at our part of the island, despite some threatening dark cloud formations during the late afternoon and there was some very hard wind blowing during the afternoon. Max temp reached 30.9C

The forecast has now drastically changed, all strong wind has evaporated and is off the predication charts for the next ten days. Rain doesn't look too likely, besides an occasional tropical shower but the cloud cover seems to stick around for most of the current predicted ten day forecast.

It's cloudy over Koh Samui and today I doubt that we will have a lot of sun or any sun at all. Current temp at 7am is 27.2C

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 6th July, 2015

Durian tree at a durian plantation on top of Khow Tanim (Tanim mountain) near the Magic Garden, the durian season is slowing starting up on Samui in contrast to other provinces where it is already in full swing

Blue Star Mountain Restaurant, Lamai

Blue Star Mountain Restaurant, Lamai

After my trip report to the Magic Garden in the Samui hills or rather mountains of last month with the road opposite Wat Kunaram in Lamai, we went again today but this time it was with my family and my good friend Eric from the Netherlands who visits Samui twice per year for the last 10 years.

Before we went to the Magic Garden we decided to have lunch in one of the many mountain restaurants, all of them claiming great view points. We ended up in Blue Star Mountain, run by a local Samui woman, Khun Ladda and her Swiss husband of 22 years, Jean.

Blue Star Mountain has a lovely location just before reaching the Magic Garden, there are sign posts to this restaurant and to all of the other restaurants as soon as you're within a few hundred meters.

Make sure to avoid lunch time or the time around 1pm since the restaurant is used by a lot of the 'around the island' tour jeeps. The food is a lot more expensive than on the lower parts of the island but that makes sense since everything has to be brought up the mountain.

The views are spectacular indeed, here Koh Taen and Koh Mudsum can be seen in the distance.

A view direction Nathon over the lush jungle and Durian trees which were just being harvested.

If you're on your trip around the island, don't forget to take the turn opposite Lamai's Wat Kunaram and have a great couple of hours in Samui mountains, visiting the Magic Garden and eat something at one of the many viewpoint restaurants.

Magic Garden, Lamai

Magic Garden, Lamai

This has been on my list of places to visit on Samui since a very long time and finally I got to got there yesterday, after my visit to the Transport office Surat Thani, branch Koh Samui, renewing my drivers license, always an adventure in itself!

Magic Garden, Lamai
Magic Garden, Lamai; The road signs opposite Wat Kunaram

One of the reasons I finally got around visiting this place, is that since very shortly, it's been more accessible than ever before. Directly opposite Wat Kunaram with it's mummified monk, near Lamai is now a brand new road that leads through the very steep hills to the Magic or Buddha Garden, see the sign above. You can't really miss it. In typical Thai fashion, there are no pre-warning or other signs though, if you miss it, that's it!

The road leading through the hills is impressive but stick to the main road, I took some other roads and all were dead ends where I had to back out of with my car, which can be interesting on a very steep hill with curves in it and a drop down at one side of a couple of 100 meters.

Magic Garden, Lamai
Magic Garden, Lamai

The "Magic Garden" or "Secret Buddha Garden" is located in the hills of Samui. A Samuian fruit farmer, Nim Thongsuk, started to build the garden in 1976 when he was 77 years old.

The old road leading to the Magic Garden, coming from Nathon led through a Military section of said road but the last couple of years, the guards used to let you pass. With the new road originating near  Lamai it's a lot easier to reach the Magic Garden.

Magic Garden, Lamai

Once inside the magic garden, after having paid an 80,-THB admission fee, you enter a beautiful piece of nature with small, miniature waterfalls and small statues are all over the place. It's a fantastic transition into a different world, walking down the stairs to the actual 'garden'.

A little stream runs through the whole garden and the above picture has two stone bodies (can you see their feet?) lying in the flow of the stream. It seems that they used some imagination and created a few unexpected scenery's. Very nicely done!

Magic Garden, Lamai

I'm pretty sure that all the statues have meanings but it's difficult to near impossible to find out their (Buddhist?) meaning since there are no guides or brochures with an explanation. Near the entrance is a small sitting area with the typical Samui souvenirs but unfortunately with no actual information on the Garden.

Magic Garden, Lamai
Magic Garden, Lamai; This series of statues is the 'piece de resistance' and shows a troupe of around a dozen dancers.

Magic Garden, Lamai
Magic Garden, Lamai; The group of dancers with a group of musicians in the front. A lovely sight and beautifully located in the middle of Samui hills.

After I left the Magic Garden, I rode around in the hills, passing Durian gardens, bamboo trees, looking into steep valleys and having fantastic views over Samui, all the way down to the distant ocean.

There are plenty of restaurants and view points along the way and it's well worth stopping at some of these places and have a cold drink or get something to eat and just enjoy the scenery.

The picture above shows the road block leading into Nathon, marking the Military area. Just after I turned around, a jeep of one of the organised trips around the island came down the hill and I guess that they just pass by the blockade and continue on their way down on the main road.
The road leading to the right, as suggested on the signage was another dead end road, but I enjoyed travelling back and taking the same road down to Wat Kunaram again.

Rent a car or bike and travel around the island as described in another post on this blog but don't forget to include the Magic Garden!
