Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 9^th December – 15^th December 2019

Sunday morning and time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 9th December – 15th December 2019. This time coming from Surat Thani where I just participated in a half marathon.

On Koh Samui it's nice and sunny. Not exactly what you expect this time of the year. It's already 29C at 10am on the island. Get ready for a hot one!

On the other hand, Surat Thani is having overcast and it looks like it will rain at some stage today. Current temperature at 10am is also 29C

My half marathon went well. Although the total race distance on my GPS is 21.64km, I managed what I wanted to do. Run a half marathon under one hour and forty minutes. I did just that with a handful of seconds to spare. Unfortunately I only place 7th in my age group 50-59 out of 177. There were only 5 trophies per age category.

Last week was nothing like how it should be or can be expected during this time of the year. We has plenty of sunshine, partially cloudy skies and no rain. Not really your typical rainy season on Koh Samui and the surrounding islands. Maximum temperatures reached 31C. The minimum temperature got stuck at 21C at night. Very nice and agreeable weather last week indeed!

Picking the BIB number yesterday at Koh Lamphu in Surat Thani. This morning I participated in the Surat Thani half marathon. I achieved a bew personal best on the half marathon distance.

The forecast for next week is looking really good. Partially clouded to blue skies. Maybe an occasional tropical shower. The very nice weather keeps holding on. Enjoy your stay on the island before it will get busy around Christmas and New Year.

Goodbye to July 2019

Goodbye to July 2019

Another month gone and time to say Goodbye to July 2019. Here on this last day of July 2019, we have a cloudy sky and a current temperature of 30C. 

The majority of the month was a lot better though, if we stick to the weather. First of all there was plenty of sunshine with many blue skies Secondly, we saw some partially clouded skies as well. Last but not least, we had a little bit of rain as well. Not anywhere near what a 'normal' or average July bring sin around the Samui archipelago though.

It was a great July weather wise. Way above average.

Almost paradoxical, Samui and the surrounding islands need the rain. Drought is a potential problem and usually July fills the ground water reservoirs up a bit. So let it rain!

Goodbye to July 2019

For me it was goo to be home during this month. Spent time with the family and helped out around the house. We have construction going on, so all help is needed and welcome in our household at the time being.

Am looking forward to August right now. It looks like the islands will get some well needed rain during next month's first week. Let's hope we can find the right balance between sunshine and rain next month.

Today's weather;

A nice blue sky is shaping up over Koh Samui with a few clouds in it. Current temp at 7am is 26.5C

Today is Constitution Day in Thailand, which is an official holiday, with all banks, governments buildings etc being closed.

At Panagsama beach near Moalboal in the Philippines it looks very similar, blue skies with some clouds in it and beautiful dive conditions. In front of my breakfast place there's a massive sardine ball and sometimes a few hundred to a thousand jump out of the water, a beautiful sight. Current temp at 8am local time is 26C

Yesterday saw a fairly nice day with some short but hard rain during the afternoon. Max temp reached 32C

The forecast predicts that it will be ice until the weekend but than rain and wind will pop up and it may be plenty of rain. The monsoon may be back for a few days.

Today's weather;

It's partially cloudy or is it partially sunny around Koh Samui this morning. Current temp at 7am is 25.9C

In Moalboal in the Philippines it's also nice and sunny with clear blue skies. Hope it remains this way and no storm or typhoon will hit land over the weekend. Current temp at 8am local time is 27C

The forecast shows a bit more clouds with some rain occasionally for the next seven days.

This is definitely a very 'Samui' style experience and actually a rather exclusive Southern Thai event. Even better, besides on Samui, the only other place it takes place at, is the province of Nakhon Si Thammarat.

The big red sign makes it very clear what's happening but not the original sign on the top left of the red sign, with all letters pretty much gone!
There are a few fight stadiums on Stadiums on Samui. I know about this one in Bang Makham, near Nathon, there's one in Maenam there's another one in Lamai and there's one around the Ghost Road section at the crossing. Let's count this one towards Bang Rak. There may be one or two more that I'm not aware of.

The road leading up to the stadium. You didn't forget for a second that we're in Thailand, did you? Hence the food stalls on the way in, you can't avoid them. Snacks and food are just everywhere.

The cashier. It's rather expensive, 360,-THB for males and females and 100,-THB for children.

Most money however will change hands during the betting! Thais just love to bet.

The actual 'arena'. Before a fight, two buffalo's are put at each end of a white linen 'wall'. The buffalo's stand there, getting accustomed to 'their' territory. Once the linen wall is pulled away, they immediately face an intruder in their territory and will defend their territory accordingly. They lock horns until one of them runs out of the arena. This can last seconds, literally or a very long time. The locking horns part is also serious business and plenty of buffalo power, sweat and blood is spilled.

At 9.30 am, during the warming up for the first fight, a couple of 100 folks are already milling around on this Sunday morning. There are up to 3 fights during the day but sometimes the fights take place over various days and than there may be just one fight per evening.

The buffalo's are treated very well and are rather expensive.

If on Samui and you get the chance to witness a buffalo fight, it may interesting to go and watch it. The buffalo's are not killed after their fight, by the way!
