Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 12th October – 18th October 2020

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 12th October – 18th October 2020

A day late, but nonetheless, here's the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 12th October – 18th October 2020.
My excuse for being late, I was too tired yesterday. After I completed the first episode of the Samui Trail, I was beat and spent for the rest of the day. It was 'only' 14km but with some of the most difficult and technical courses I ever ran on. Well, running is maybe too much said. It was hardcore trail, slipping and sliding through the jungle. Fun, but hard. Below you can find a picture of me in action during the trail.

Today we actually had a nice and rather sunny day. It was warm for a change! It's already 8.30pm and it's still 29C. The maximum temperature today reached 33C

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 12th October – 18th October 2020

Some or many of you may remember this place in Chaweng. It's opposite the lake, behind the big building that holds a McDonalds. There used to be a food market here. A thriving food market, each night filled with tourists. Now it has been torn down, because there are no tourists anymore.

During most days of last week we had cloud cover and showers. The maximum temperature reached 31C. The minimum got stuck at 22C during one night, mid week. The rest of the week it dropped to around 23C.

In the meantime, Covid keeps making it's impact around the island. Not with infections! Mind you, the Thai government seems to be protecting the 80% of the Thai population that are not working in the tourist industry. That seems to work. However, having said that, the 20% that are relying on the tourist industry are being hit very hard. Most people are really running out of financial means. Businesses all around the island are closing down and/or are up for sale. More and more people are leaving Koh Samui to go back to their home provinces. Live is cheaper there, no rent, maybe they can grow some own food.
Even out neighborhood, Plai Laem, which is a residential area, experiences the impact of people leaving. The amount of empty houses, rooms, and the like, is staggering. Rows and rows of empty shop houses can be found all over the island. Really sad to see, how many of these business that did really well, have to shut down and go out of business.
December and January are the months that things will really get tight in Thailand.
In the meantime, keep following the news about the demonstrations in Bangkok. Many people are out on the street. Let's hope this will all find a good and peaceful ending.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 12th October – 18th October 2020

Myself in action during the Samui Trail #1 in Lipa Noi yesterday. I'm wading, climbing my way through and out of a waterfall. It was a fun race, but with the most technical route I've ever participated on. My pace was at 11'04 per minute. Most of the route you could only walk, going through the jungle, up hill. Slipping and sliding. Mountain high, river waterfall deep.

For this week, we may experience some rain, starting from Wednesday. From Thursday onward we may have some strong showers each day. We're getting closer to November, our rainy season. The weather forecasts are stating this as well.

Whilst you are here, do 'like' my Koh Samui blog Facebook page and enjoy the beaches around the island or in front of your hotel or resort and get some well deserved rest and a break. That is, once the travel restrictions have been lifted.

There are plenty Thais and foreigners, Westerners or farangs who have a hard time dealing with no income and bills to pay. Unfortunately I'm no exception to this rule. If you like this blog, this is a good time to help out and make a donation. If you can, it's much appreciated! Ask me what options are available. It's getting harder each week! Please do help if you can afford to do so! Much appreciated!

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 20th August – 26th August 2018

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 20th August – 26th August 2018

Sunday afternoon and here it is, the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 20th August – 26th August 2018.
It's been cloudy all day long and it's currently 30C at 2pm. It looks like it will stay cloudy and dry for the rest of the day.

The previous week was slowly getting into August shape again. Towards the end of the week it was partially cloudy. Temperatures rose immediately and it was hot. We had temperatures ranging between 28C and 32C but it felt a lo warmer at times.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 20th August – 26th August 2018; View from top of the hill at Lip Yai, where there is a restaurant. The view is over Lipa Noi. You can see Lipa Noi beach all the way down to the Navy base.

For next week it's looking dry for a change and hopefully we can leave this August behind us with a few nice days. It will be partially cloudy at best but dry for next week. More sunshine may turn up next weekend, at the start of September.

Please do 'like' my Koh Samui blog Facebook page and enjoy the beaches around the island or in front of your hotel or resort and get some well deserved rest and a break. If you're done resting or need something else to do, there's plenty of things on offer on and around Koh Samui, you can go snorkeling or diving or take a dive course.

You can also enjoy some of the trips I recommend, like a half day gourmet lunch and snorkeling trip at the Southern part of Koh Samui or a photography trip where you get to see the most photo genetic spots on the island or go for a drinks tasting tour if you like a tipple or two.

You may also opt for a very special dinner experience at The Thai Experience. Behind closed doors, reservation only and a very enjoyable and well worthwhile way of spending an evening on Samui. Authentic Thai food and a great atmosphere. Can highly recommend this experience. Contact me for more detailed information on any of the options mentioned.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 6th August – 12th August 2018

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 6th August – 12th August 2018

Sunday morning and time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 6th August – 12th August 2018. We're on the way back home from Don Sak to Koh Samui after having visited a funeral wake yesterday on the mainland near Surat Thani city.

On Koh Samui it looks grey with plenty of cloud cover. No rain or marginal rain is expected today. Current temperature at 11am is 29C.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 6th August – 12th August 2018

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 6th August – 12th August 2018; View at the Raja Ferry pier at Lipa Noi. On the way there again, left Don Sak at 10.12 with the 10am ferry. Service at Raja is abysmal, ferries are notoriously late and slow. Comfort levels are low on old and mostly outdated ferries. I prefer the Seatran ferry but sometimes circumstances dictate a Raja ferry sailing. Not something to look forward to. Bottom line is that they don't seem to care about their customers. Since they started the Don Sak - Koh Samui service in 1981.

Last week saw a mix of hard wind, plenty of rain and occasional sunshine. Maximum temperatures ranged between 24C and 33C. So far it's not the August that you would hope and expect on Koh Samui.

For next week the forecast predicts hard wind today and tomorrow. The strong wind declines each day until Thursday. Come Friday the wind may pick up again. Besides a few isolated showers or thunderstorms throughout the week, some more rain is possible over next weekend.

Please do 'like' my Koh Samui blog Facebook page and enjoy the beaches around the island or in front of your hotel or resort and get some well deserved rest and a break. Bangkok Airways Samui Half marathon, Sunday 10th June 2018

Bangkok Airways Samui Half marathon, Sunday 10th June 2018

One of Koh Samui's biggest running events is coming to town again with the Bangkok Airways Samui Half marathon, Sunday 10th June 2018.
After last years race that included also the full marathon distance, this years event will see the half marathon as longest distance. There will also be an option to run a 10km or a 5km race.

This half marathon is part of a series of six half and full marathons, including races in Krabi, Koh Samui, Lampang, Phuket, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai.

Bangkok Airways Samui Half marathon, Sunday 10th June 2018

Bangkok Airways Samui Half marathon, Sunday 10th June 2018

This years date, Sunday 10th June 2018, may coincide with dates of a PADI IDC on Phuket, so there's no guarantee for me yet that I can participate. This years race original date was planned a week later, but unfortunately Bangkok Airways had already an event scheduled on koh Samui for that date, so an alternate date had to be found; Sunday 10th June.
It's also unfortunate that this dates coincides with another big running event in Southern Thailand, the Laguna Phuket marathon. Some Samui runners will actually participate in this event on the same date.
Nonetheless, I hope I can participate and furthermore really hope that this event will become a yearly event on the Samui running calendar!

Bangkok Airways Samui Half marathon, Sunday 10th June 2018; The 2018 half marathon route, with start and finish at Nathon and leading the race into the Lipa Noi area

Last year the marathon and half marathon route passed out house on Koh Samui, this year the event will take place at a completely different part of the island.
The start will be at the Nathon pier area, an area often used area for starting and finishing a running event on Koh Samui. What is relatively new is the route, it will lead into the Lipa Noi area, where there will be a turn around point which will lead back to the start and finish line.
This route was also used five years for a Samui Triathlon race.

Come and join the fun, you can sign up at Teelakow, the organizers website.

Welcome to December 2017

Welcome to December 2017

It's the first day of the last month of this year and time to say Welcome to December 2017. On this first day of December we have left yesterday's storm behind us and surprise, surprise, the sun is out and about! Just like the picture below, except with possibly even less clouds! Current temperature at around 11am is 30.2C and rising.

This is not the weather to expect for the rest of this month though. December is usually a rather wet month, especially until around the middle of the month. The second may see improvements but that's not a guarantee.

Last year saw an extremely bad sample of rainy season during December. In general it will be fairly wet though and the first week of this month is not an exception, according to the forecasts. Good amounts of rain can be expected until Thursday this week.

Welcome to December 2017

Welcome to December 2017; The road near Samui Hot Club in Lipa Noi. This is the weather we are having today, but most likely this will not be the weather for the rest of this month!

It will be another busy month for me with a PADI IDC coming up on Phuket this Monday. Before that I will run the Surat Thani half marathon on Sunday 3rd December and the Phuketon half marathon on Sunday 10 December is on the schedule as well. This could turn out to be a big event with many participants,

Stay tuned for updates of this December month and when you're on the island, I do hope you enjoy your stay, despite the possible rain.

Welcome to November 2017

Welcome to November 2017

It's the first day of this new month and here we go; Welcome to November 2017.

Today is very cloudy and a fair wind is starting to blow, increasing in strength throughout the day. Later during the day rain is expected to start come down and it's supposed to continue  to rain pretty much until and throughout Saturday. At 7am the current temperature is 28.2C

November is when the monsoon starts and it can get very wet around the island, with all associated issues that come along with this, like floods and power cuts, just to name a few.
Last year saw a nice November, with plenty of sun but also enough rain but the year before, 2015, saw almost non stop rain.

The forecast is not looking too good for the first week with some strong winds coming in over the next couple of days and plenty of rain.

Welcome to November 2017

Welcome to November 2017; Samui hot club, a clothes shop now located in the South of the island in Lipa Noi but it used to be smack down in the middle of Chaweng. Now it's about 10 minutes outside of Nathon if you drive direction Lamai.

We will also see Loy Kratong on Friday 3rd November, the very popular festivity around Thailand where you put a float in water. On Koh Samui typically at Wat Plai Laem or Chaweng lake. It will be my third year in total that I will celebrate this in Khao Lak.

Welcome to November 2017

Welcome to November 2017; The harbor in Thap Lamu where all the day trips and live aboard boats to the Similan islands, Koh Tachai, Koh Bon, Richelieu Rock and the Burma banks leave. The pier offers more space to bigger boats than is just shown on the picture. Local fisherman also use this and other piers and the Thai Navy has their own pier just a few hundred meters away.

The first week of this month I will spend in Khao Lak and a day on Phuket and two weeks will be spend in Moalboal in the Philippines, which leaves little time at home. The weekly updates and any other interesting island developments or events will be resported about, as always.

Please do 'like' my Koh Samui blog Facebook page and enjoy the beaches around the island or in front of your hotel or resort and get some well deserved rest and a break. Goodbye to February 2017

Goodbye to February 2017

It's the end of this very short month and time to say 'Goodbye to February 2017'. Besides 2008 and last year, February is usually a very nice month around Koh Samui and this year was no exception.
After the horrendous flood problems in December 2016 and January, just last month, it was time for a change and a break and Koh Samui got the break.

The month was nice and sunny with most days partially clouded skies with lots of blue and sunshine in it. The island could warm up again and recover from the damage done by two consecutive massive rain and flood periods. Lots of roads were fixed very quickly and it for the visitors it was a great time to hang out at the various Samui beaches, do some sightseeing and in general enjoy the atmosphere on our beloved island.
There were only a few times when we had rain, mostly in the evenings or night anyway and yesterday saw a stormy day, with lots of rain and cloudy sky all day long. Today is already looking better again and the sun is out and about again, to send February off in good fashion.

Goodbye to February 2017

Goodbye to February 2017; The Naval Base in Lipa Noi was hosting a two night camping trip of our son's school and all kids in his school year went on the trip. This is usually not an area open for public but on this occasion, parents were allowed to visit their kids on the premises. This big anchor can be found there as well.

It was a busy month for me, with completing a PADI IDC program on Koh Lanta and with just a travel day in-between, starting and completing another PADI IDC program on Phuket, before I could finally make it back home at the end of the month, having been on the road for almost a complete month. Both programs also saw some PADI Specialty Instructor training, which included a good couple of days diving!

Goodbye to February 2017

Goodbye to February 2017; Near the finish line of this years edition of the Surat Thani marathon, which I completed in a new personal best of 3 hours and 43 minutes, coming in twelfth all over and second in my age category, although only 78 participants started.

Once back on Koh Samui, I enjoyed time being together with my family again, going out for dinner and lunch and slowly start running again after the Surat Thani marathon.

Now it's time to look forward to next month, March 2017, which usually is also a very nice month with plenty of sunshine. See you around on Koh Samui!

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 4th February, 2017

Today's weather;

It's time to start flocking back to Koh Samui again! This morning sees lovely blue skies all over the island and it should stay like that all day long! Current temp at 7am is 26C

On Koh Lanta we also have a lovely blue sky shaping up, with a a few lone and thin clouds in it. Current temp at 7am is 25C
A few of my PADI IDC candidates and myself will be on the boat, diving over the next two days, before the PADI IE start on Monday morning! But first it's time to enjoy and relax.

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 4th February, 2017; Sunset at Lipa Noi. The good weather is back on Koh Samui and is here to stay!

Yesterday saw an interesting day with some rain and at some places on the island, very hard rain, but in our North Eastern part of the island, it was cloudy but stayed dry all day long. Max temp reached 30C

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 4th February, 2017

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 4th February, 2017; View towards the bridge connecting the two Lanta islands, Koh Lanta Yai and Koh Lanta Noi. Koh Lanta Yai is where all the development and tourist action is and that's where this picture is taken. The bridge is great, since it eliminated the need of using the very small ferries that caused massive traffic jams and waiting times to get on or off the island and opened less than a year ago

There forecast for the next seven days is looking very good, how about blue skies with occasionally a cloud in it? Excellent conditions to relax at the beach or go out and about and see and explore the island, on your own or with a tour, like the tour options that you can book through me, the half day gourmet picnic and snorkel tour, the photography tour or the drinks tasting tour. Diving is also top notch now, with the water clarity getting better each day and lots of fish to see and flat oceans. Please don't hesitate to contact me for more information an any tour option you may be interested in.

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 11th April, 2016

A sunrise, very early morning at Ban Saladan, looking out over the almost completed and new bridge connecting Koh Lanta Yai (where I am) and Koh Lanta Noi, making the current long waiting times at the small and slow ferries between the two islands obsolete

The forecast changed ever so slightly, the breeze remained for the next ten days, the blue skies are also present and during and after next weekend the predicted clouds are not as dense anymore as they originally were predicted. Enjoy the warm and sunny April and Songkran days around Koh Samui.
