Kila Amphur Koh Samui 2017

It's been two years since I visited the Kila Amphur Koh Samui 2017, well, that was rather in 2015! This was the fifth time I was able to visit the event, after 2010, 2012, 2015, 2015 and this year.

If you have been following this blog, you may know that this is an annual event, happening all around the country and on Koh Samui it was last week. Each day of the week sees a different age group parading and participating in sport events.

We were lucky enough that our two eldest children, were scheduled for the same day and our youngest doesn't have to participate. Yet! At least, that's how I see it. My wife may have a slightly different view on this event. If she would have the time, she would happily visit two or three days out of the five days the event is on!

It can get hot at the Baan Namuang stadium and it can take a while before any action is happening at all, or before one of your children is finally allowed to march in the parade. A lot of waiting is involved. Luckily the weather was kind this year, without too much direct sunshine. The children in all their elaborate clothing may have a hard time staying cool.

The event is supposed to start at 8am but I still need to see that before I believe it. As usual, each time I visited, parking wasn't an easy option. The rather big parking lot near the stadium was packed to the rafters with motorbikes and cars. We did get our parking spot though and it was an enjoyable event this year. Partly due to the weather not being too hot and sunny!

Our oldest daughter had to sit on one of the stands and 'cheer', which none of the other kids, including our daughter, seemed to enjoy too much. There's no escaping though, participation is mandatory. Either in a sports event, like jumping, running and many other athletic disciplines or............. cheering and sitting at the stands all day long. Since our oldest daughter isn't too keen on the sports part, the stands it was. 

Our son was the bearer of a shield with the schools name on it, so he didn't have to sit on the stands. A 'political' choice, I suspect!

Kila Amphur Koh Samui 2017; Back in black! Many groups were wearing black clothing, a hint to the passing away of HM King Bhumibol, less than a year ago? His picture was carried around much more than the current King X.

All in all, it was a pleasant event this year. WE could squeeze out for an hour or so, to enjoy a great lunch at Sweet Sisters Cafe, around the corner, before we went back and picked up our oldest daughter, who completed her stand duty shortly after 4pm.

If you ever have the opportunity to visit one of these events around the country, don't hesitate to do so. It's something different and you will be drenched in Thai culture, guaranteed off the beaten track!

Today's weather;

There's a partially cloudy sky over Koh Samui this morning and it looks like it will be a fairly sunny and hot today. Current temp at 7am is 28C

Yesterday at both Tesco Lotus outlets on the island, there were dinosaurs visiting, this was taken at the Chaweng outlet around noon, Great fun for the kids and some scared ones to boost

Yesterday saw a fairly sunny and hot day with some surprise drizzle in the late afternoon. Max temp reached 34C

The forecast for the next ten days didn't change a lot, mostly cloudier skies with a bit of wind and an occasional tropical shower but also enough sunshine to make it nice days. Rather typical June weather.

Today's weather;

There's a solid cloud cover over Koh Samui this morning and I expect it to stay like this, without too much sun and possibly some hard rain during the late afternoon, when the wind drops a bit. Current temp at 7am is 29C

Yesterday saw surprisingly enough some sunshine at times and although I didn't experience any rain personally, there may have been other parts of teh island that did experience some rain. The wind was blowing very hard though, all day long, Max temp reached 30C

Sadly enough it is thought that two tourists died when a speedboat capsized yesterday near Nathon at Laem Khai.

The forecast is looking on the up, the wind should have fizzled out come Tuesday and the first appearance of the sun may be around, with more sunshine to come later next week. All in all the stormy weather was not as bad as initially predicted.

The Pirate Park, water park in Surat Thani

A visit to the The Pirate Park, water park in Surat Thani was in place. After our recent visit to Bangkok, we booked a night at Sabye D hotel in Surat Thani and spent the night, but first it was straight from the night train into the water park.

Straight ain't the right word though, we had to wait two and a half hours before the water park opened at 10am. The hotel room wasn't available yet and almost nothing else is open in town. It was a bit of a challenge but we managed,

The water park is located on the 417, leading out of Surat Thani towards the airport, after the second PTT gas station on your left hand side. Can't miss it, there are big signs and it's pretty much straight on the road.

There's plenty of parking space available outside but non is sun covered, your car will be steaming hot once you get back to it.

The entrance fee was really good, 250,-THB for adults and 150,-THB for children under 120 cm, added up to 900.-THB for the whole family, can't beat that!

Once inside, to your left are lockers, showers and bathrooms. There's almost no shade to be found, some shelters are set up with chairs inside and there's a big areas to your right at the entrance where small food stalls can be found, but only two or so were open yesterday which made excellent seating fro our group, out of the beaming sun.

This is a bit of a problem, that there's almost no shade to be found. You will burn really quickly, so plenty of sun lotion on your body is required. Best is to act like the Thais and cover up your body with long sleeved shirts and at least knee length shorts.

The other problem I had was that not all of the attractions were cooled down by water, which could cause burn wounds due to rubbing the plastic cover of the attractions and very hot foot soles by walking over very hot rubber.

The attractions are air filled, like the bouncy castles at local fairs here in Thailand. That partly explains the cheap entrance fees, but it comes with a few downsides, as explained before. I burned my knee and some attractions were just plain uncomfortable due to the plastic or rubber being way too hot and not being cooled down by water.

The actual attractions boil down to two big pools for children, one just to play and with some slides and one big pool with small paddle boats.

The other two main attractions are two lengthy obstacle courses, one for people taller than 150cm with deep water surrounding the course and one for children with shallow water.

Both courses are challenging though and difficult to complete. On both courses there seemed to be plenty of staff at hand that could help out in case of problems.

As already mentioned though, some of the rides are not cooled down enough or sprinkled by water so the plastic cover becomes steaming hot and you burn your feet easily. Some parts of the obstacle course have the same problem and it is rather very uncomfortable.

Trying to complete the courses can also be very tiring, pending on how serious or relaxed your attempt to completing a course is.

Although there was a big, roof covered area, hence shay but still hot, with typical Thai small food stands, only two out of ten stands were open. There's also an air conditioned restaurant on the premises, but we didn't check out the options available and there's a coffee shop that sells shakes and is part of the park, but is located outside of the park and you need to get a big, fat stamp at the exit so you can get back in again. This is the only place where fruit shakes are being sold, and although various tastes are on the menu, a mixed fruit shake is not an option! Very strange indeed.

When we visited, a week day but during a long Thai school holiday, it was not busy at all, I wonder how busy it gets during a weekend, probably a bit busier.

All in all I'm glad we visited, but I don't see us return that quickly. Too many small things that were missing that once added up, made it for a mediocre experience. The kids loved it though.

Today's weather;

It's still a bit hazy this early in the morning over Koh Samui but it looks like a nice blue and sunny sky is about to shape up over the island with just a few clouds in the sky. Hopefully it will clear up further during the day. Current temp at 7am is 27C

Yesterday saw a partially cloudy sky, more clouds than sunshine, although the sun was out and about a few times. It stayed dry and it was nice day. Max temp reached 31C

A bit late possibly, but the Teletubbies are visiting Koh Samui 21-22 November at Central Festival. In general thought to be an event for children, but maybe some grown ups would like to attend as well and have a trip down memory lane. It's the first time they visit Samui with a road show.

Kila Amphur Koh Samui 2015

Today is already the first day of the Kila Amphur Koh Samui 2015. Tuesday the Anuban, the young kids aged four to seven had their day of showing off their skills and yesterday the first of three days for the 7 and older had their moments of glory!

Our oldest two children participate each year, although I don't always have time to go and see the event, due to work commitments. By now it's about my sixth Kila Amphur that I visit. It's held all over the country but each province may have different dates when it's organized.

Each year it's an early start for the make up to be put on, the hair to be styled and uniforms to be fitted. This year the alarm was set at 2am. By 7am we left the house just to get stuck in the yearly traffic jam but we were all ready to 'rock & roll' shortly after 8am.

Kila Amphur Koh Samui 2015; Time to call Saul, whiplash victims are visiting the Kila Amphur. Sometimes the teachers come up with some very strange clothing styles, these girls necks were covered in white neck bands, almost making it look like they were whiplash victims

Our children were in slot seven of all schools, which is still good and means an early start and almost as important, a fairly early time to go back home again, around noon.

Kila Amphur Koh Samui 2015; The Stasi (former East German secret police) was also there; A teacher, completely covered up for sun protection.

It was fun and due the unexpected sunny skies, it was hot! Plenty of schools lined up their best dresses and acts, and the acts mean the drum major shows. Our eldest daughter was in a combined 'pact' of three schools, her own Bophud school, together with the Plai Laem and Bang Rak schools.

After yesterdays parade, the 'games' started. Sporting events were scheduled for yesterday afternoon, today and tomorrow, mainly consisting of athletic competitions like track running, jumping and the like.

Kila Amphur Koh Samui 2014

Yesterday saw this years version of the Kila Amphur on Koh Samui, After reports in 2009, 2010 and 2012, here's the low down for this year.

Last year our eldest daughter participated in the running event, this year she switched back to a more 'girly' activity and became a drum major.

They were the first school to start the parade, which suited me just fine. My wife came down by car with a load of children, all dressed up for their parade. This years alarm went off at 2am!

Since I still had lots of things to prepare for my departure to South Korea later today, I went by motorbike, which allowed to make an early exit back home. A wise move, the rest of the family didn't get back until 4pm!

Our son marched also in the parade, with his fellow classmates, depicting various ASEAN countries, he had been given a Thai traditional dress.

It was fairly sunny and hot and a long day was lying ahead for everyone involved. The food and drunks vendors did good bunines during this week.

Waiting, it's going to be a long day

It's a big event, held ll over country during this time of year, not necessarily during the same week or weekends. A lot of practice time precedes every year the actual event and classes come virtually to a stand still, in order to practice the various moves, dances etc that are part of the event.

The music equipment is quite heavy and can easily be parked

Each school presents their moves in front of the local 'powers that are' and the parade just moves on very slowly. Everybody who had already completed their part, has to wait in the middle of the sports ground, where it can become very hot indeed.

As in previous years, it was great to see my children in action, but after a short while I was also grateful and happy that I could leave again. Making pictures during the event is always fun though!

Every year, Spark! Circus visits schools and orphanages all along the Thai-Burmese border to bring play, joy and creativity to children who have nothing.

This is their 9th year of activity.

While Burma is changing, for most of these refugees the changes have only brought more uncertainty, with funds and support drying up as organizations focus more on Burma and less on these camps. In reality, their lives are not changed…

Spark! volunteers are visiting Samui to share their story, perform a great show for us and raise more funds to be able to share more creative toys with the children they teach…

Today's weather;

It's cloudy and hazy around Koh Samui this morning but the sun tries hard to break through. Current temp at 7am is 24.9C

Yesterday saw a cloudy day but it's still dry and so far it has been a very dry December. Max temp reached 28C

The forecast predicts a drop of wind and more sunshine within a day or two. It looks like a nice start of the new year.

Road fatalities statistics for New Year 2013, day 2

Before we get to the new year, the road statistics are not very good. A bus accident near Chumphon with the Bangkok - Hat Yai bus, where the driver apparently fell asleep at 5am, injured 18 people. 

On day two of the so-called "seven dangerous days" of the New Year holiday period, the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department's Road Safety Operation Centre, reported that 47 people had been killed and 486 injured in 474 road accidents on Dec 28. Bringing the total up to 86 killed people by road accidents, with drunk driving being the biggest culprit.

Today's weather;

The sky over Koh Samui is fairly blue this morning with a few clouds in it and a current temp at 7am of 26.5C

Today are provincial elections around the island and all of Surat Thani province.

Yesterday started out cloudy, during the morning the clouds lifted nicely but around noon it ws cloudy again. Nonetheless it was warm all day long yesterday with a max temp of 32.6C

The forecast for the next 7 days changed a bit and now it shows more wind, more clouds and more likely to have rain after Tuesday with a climax come Friday.

At the Kila Amphur yesterday, for the yearly school events, Wednesday through Friday are for the athletic events for all schools around Koh Samui

Yesterday saw some sunshine through a fairly clouded sky but during the afternoon there was a trace of rain and the wind picked up again. Max temp reached 31.2C

The forecast shows strong wind tomorrow afternoon and into Saturday, accompanied by bits of rain. It;s supposed to ease up come Tuesday.

At last, a drastic change in the morning weather has occurred around Koh Samui and we have a near prefect blue sky again. Current temp at 7am is 27C

Second week of school is starting for our children

Yesterday saw a nice, sunny morning again with cloud formation after midday and a short drizzle during the afternoon. That seems to be the pattern for the last couple of days with slight variations to the theme. Max temp reached 34.6C

The forecast didn't change much, some wind until Wednesday and smooth sailing towards and over next weekend.

Blue Paradise Fest, Chaweng Lake, the event

Yesterday around 6pm we arrived at the Blue Paradise Fest at Chaweng Lake with the family to enjoy a couple of hours of entertainment, sponsored by Bangkok Airways to celebrate the 24th anniversary of Samui Airport.

It was very well organized and there were only two entrance areas with good security checks. So early on it wasn't too busy but there were already enough people out and about. By the time we left  somewhere after 8pm there were still plenty of people going towards the lake.

There was also plenty of food, among others from members of the THA (Thai Hotel Association)

We first checked out the children's playground or Fun Park which had a few attractions like a wheel, a bungee and a fun castle for kids. Shortly after that we went to check out the food selection since we all were hungry!

The entrance was fee and a nice line up of Thai 'Superstars' were scheduled to perform. We saw Catherine English and the second act whose name I don't know, the shows went on until 1am and included Mario Maurer, who is world famous in Thailand!

During our first visit to the Fun Park there weren't many queues but shortly before we went home there were queues in front of all attractions. In general it was a lot busier by then.

It seemed like everybody had a good time and it was nicely busy, at least 5.000 people showed up I would imagine. Now if Bangkok Airways would spend this kind of money on the 4th edition of the Samui Marathon, I would be very happy but unfortunately this event has been skipped from their agenda.

A nice blue sky is shaping up over Koh Samui with just a few clouds in it. Current temp at 7am is 25.8C 

It's good to be able to bring the children to school again

Yesterday saw a good day with a fairly cloudy sky but also with sunshine. At around 9am there was some rain. Max temp reached 29.9C

The forecast seems to be steady, slightly more wind and an occasional shower for the enxt 7 days but especialy after next weekend the wind might pick up.

Kila Amphur Koh Samui 2012

Last year's Kila Amphur I missed due to work outside of Thailand but this year I was on the ball again! After a very early wake up call for our daughter at 3am, by 5.30am my alarm went off and by 7am we were well on our way to this years event.

The Kila Amphur sees all schools around the island participate in parades and sport event and stretches over several days. The parades for the 'kinder garden' schools started two days ago and Saturday is the final sports day.

A very popular topic was the ASEAN theme this year and many schools opted for their students being dressed up with local clothes form ASEAN countries.

More schools opted for the more traditional Kila dress up, which includes 'drum major' and marching bands or depicting local folklore. See some drum major girls above. The variety in quality of dress up from school to school varies wildly. The above pictured dresses were among the top quality mark, at least in my opinion.

Once you're on the field though, the long wait starts, school after school marches on to the ground and in front of the main stands, where a jury is positioned, all drum major groups give a performance, so it easily and quickly becomes a long day and long wait. On top of that it's either very hot or like this year, very clouded and when I had enough of the hanging around and ordered my clan back into the car, on our way home, it started to drizzle.

Although we're in Thailand and food is widely available, it hardly raises over the junk food thresh hold and that wears thin after a while. All in all, I'm glad I went and saw my daughter parade on behalf of her school but it was high time to leave before noon. After a couple of hours being pounded by the same drum beat from various marching bands, a nice nap at home was something to look forward to!
