Lamai Charity Run 18th August 2019

The first Lamai Charity Run 18th August 2019 is knocking on the door. Mark the date! First of all there is a 2.2km fun run on the road and partly on the beach. Secondly, there's a also a 11.8km run on the road, with 30% trail and a bit of beach just before the finish line.

Prices are 400.-THB per person for the fun run and 500.-THB per person for the 11.8km run. You can sign up online under this link.

The majority of the charity funds will be going to the Lamai government school.

It's great to see new running events on the island. Running is since a few years becoming increasingly popular in Thailand. Each weekend sees multiple running events across southern Thailand. Nice to see that Samui is keeping up the pace!

Goodbye to April 2019

We're on the last day of this month and that brings us to the 'Goodbye to April 2019'.

First of all the weather. It was steaming hot. The middle and end part of the month were scorching. Although the quicksilver didn't reach 40C on Koh Samui, it most certainly felt that way. There were maybe two and a half showers all month long. It's not until today, the last day of the month, that it's cloudy.

Songkran or Thai New Year in Chaweng. Always a fun celebration.

It was a busy month with plenty of activities. Especially the start of the month was busy! The first weekend saw two running events. The 7th Koh Samui Midnight run and the next morning immediately followed by the Samui Cross trail run.

At the start of this year's 7th Samui Midnight Run. At last I managed to get first spot in my age group, 50+. This was at the 5km race/ The picture above shows the start of the race. Early next morning it was off to Maenam for a 10KM trail race

The weekend after that it was time for Songkran or Thai New Year. This was fun and the whole family always enjoy celebrating this event.

It was slight;y strange though. In Chaweng, the beach road was at times closed to cars. which somehow felt like the energy and excitement levels were dropped.

Goodbye to April 2019

The 10km trail race as part of the 'Samui Cross' event. The morning after the Samui Midnight run. For me a bit too much to chew on. First of all I lost the trail and added 1.5km to the overall distance. Secondly, I was still very tired from the previous night's Midnight run, during which I ran my fastest time/pace to date. Still managed a 4th place in my age group.

All in all a good month. Busy and fun. The second half of the month saw me on Koh Lanta. I taught a PADI IDC there. All this, just to come back home to the island shortly before the end of the month.

With April in the bag, it's now time to start looking at May. Tomorrow we will welcome the new month here. Stay tuned!

Cancer Care charity fun run 15th June 2019

It's the time of the year for the 12th Cancer Care charity fun run 15th June 2019 on Koh Samui. As always organized by the Four Seasons Resort.

It's on a Saturday and the distances that can be participated in are 2km, 5km and 10km. Start will be at 7am. I was lucky enough to be able to participate in the previous 8 editions on Koh Samui.

2 KM : U-turn at Samui Motorland
· 5 KM : U-turn at Soi Sri Fah
· 10KM : U-turn at Honda

Cancer Care charity fun run 15th June 2019

Cancer Care charity fun run 15th June 2019

This run originates from Terry Fox's famous run in the 1980 in Canada. The Four Seasons committed at some stage during his run to accommodate Terry and his small entourage wherever possible. After he had to stop his run due the primary cancer having reached his longs, The Four Seasons committed in a telegram to his family to “You started it. We will not rest until your dream to find a cure for cancer is realized.”. Hence each year all over the world 'Care for Cancer' runs with all profit going to charities.

Goodbye to September 2017

The last day of this month and it calls for a 'Goodbye to September 2017'.

It's 08.40am and it's cloudy and cool with a 26C current temperature with possibly a shower to be expected today. This would make it ten days with showers this month, after last night's rain. Maybe a little bit more than average during a September but not too far off. I enjoyed this month with the morning temperatures dropping although during the afternoons it was 'sticky' hot. Due to the high humidity.

There was plenty of sunshine as well during this month, so the sun lovers could enjoy the Samui beaches.

A good September I would say, close to an average September.

Goodbye to September 2017; A box jelly protection net is placed at Ozo Hotel on Chaweng beach. There's one more box jelly protection net, in Lamai at Lamai Wanta Beach Resort.

It was a busy month on the running front for me, with 3 weekends with races including one long charity run, from North to South Samui. Six runners ran 32km starting at Aryaburi Resort in the North and ended at the Laem Sor Pagoda in the South after about three hours and 15 minutes. Exactly as was planned before hand. We managed to raise around 55,000.-THB plus numerous other, material gifts for the underprivileged children on the island.

Goodbye to September 2017; The six runners who collected around 55,000.-THB for the underprivileged children on Koh Samui. We ran 32 kilometers from North to South on Koh Samui on 23rd September.

Time to look forward to next month, October 2017, which will be a month to remember, with King's Bhumibol's funeral and cremation ceremony come 26th October. The whole month will be affected however by this event and many planned, big events may be cancelled throughout the month, so keep your eyes fixed on social media. The Full Moon Party scheduled for 5th October has already been cancelled.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 18^th September – 24^th September, 2017

It's Sunday afternoon, just past noon and that means it's time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 18th September – 24th September, 2017.

Today it has been mostly cloudy which is accompanied by a very agreeable 28.6 temperature around noon.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 18th September – 24th September, 2017; Curry pastes at the market in Plai Laem. Plenty of options, tastes and colors available.

Last week saw a nice week, with partially clouded skies and two days with some rain. At times there was a strong wind, towards the end of the week. Max temperatures ranged between 29C on Friday and 34C on Tuesday.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 18th September – 24th September, 2017; Group picture of the runners and children that benefited from the'North to South' charity run, which I participated in yesterday. 32km from Aryaburi in the North of the island all the way down to Laem Sor Pagoda in the South of the island in 3 hours and 13 minutes. The six runners managed to get 55,000.-THB together for the underprivileged children, for their new accommodation.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 18th September – 24th September, 2017; Today was the yearly 'Run to Give', aka as the 'Mad Hatter' run at The Wharf in Fisherman's Village. After yesterday's 32km charity run I was happy to participate in a shorter run. Advertised as a 5km race, we ended up running 4.17km and I managed this in 18'30 and ended up as 9th all over and 3rd in my age category 40+

The forecast for next week a strong wind blowing in until tomorrow and fading out by Wednesday, accompanied by some tropical showers. Come Thursday we may be able to enjoy a bit more sun although the skies over Koh Samui will be mostly partially cloudy. Not great but nice weather for this time of the year.

Run Samui, North to South run, 23rd September, 2017

Next month will see the Run Samui, North to South run, 23rd September, 2017, during which a maximum number of ten runners will run from Koh Samui's most Northern poit, Samrong Bay at 4am to Koh Samui's most Southern point at Laem Sor Pagoda.

The total distance will be 32km and it will be run as a group at a 6'00 minute per kilometer pace. This is not a race but an all start together, all finish together event. The event is held in conjunction with the Samui Runners Club.

Last year this event involved a run around the island and each year we're looking for a different distance and route.

This year the chosen charity is the 'Blue Home', a project of the 'Pai Douai Foundation'. A dormitory is being build in the South Western part of the island for disadvantaged children and children in need.

Last year 140,000.-THB was raised to help build the school for children with special needs. This year we hope to equal that and get the same amount of money through donations.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 20^th March – 26^th March, 2017

Today it's partially cloudy over Koh Samui and it looks like it's going to be another very warm or rather hot day. Current temp at almost 9am is 30C

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 20th March – 26th March, 2017; Up in the Maenam hills near a waterfall, with a lovely view over the ocean towards Koh Phangan. The waterfall can be found at the very end of Soi 5

Last week it was gorgeous and really heating up as well. Most days it was sunny with a few clouds in it and some days had a few more clouds, but it was very hot all week long. Friday actually saw a light shower at various places around the island, except where I happened to be, there it was dry all day long, although I moved around a bit that day. Max temperatures ranged from 31C to a whooping 34C

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 20th March – 26th March, 2017; Last night saw the 5th edition of the Koh Samui Midnight run, a charity event, in which I placed second in my age group of over fifties and sixth all over. The fourth time I participate and the fourth time I place second in my age group, despite the fact that I become faster each year. This year I was two and a half minutes compared to last year. The person who won my age category was however four minutes faster than me, so a fair win and he placed third all over.

This week I have received many question about the weather coming op next week(s), The forecasts are working with precipitations, which means that even if there's the slightest chance of rain or a thunderstorm that day, the icon of rain or a thunderstorm will show up. This doesn't mean at all that there will be either rain let alone a thunderstorm.

For our next week on Koh Samui, it's looking good, considering there's a real heavy rain and storm over Central Thailand (around Bangkok) and the North and North East of Thailand. The South may get some rain but nothing compared to the line North of Bangkok.

Expect some rain on Monday evening and throughout Tuesday and the rest of the week should be lovely, with a the odd chance of a shower.

The end of March and April are considered to be the hottest time of the year on Koh Samui and any rain is actually nice and will cool things down a bit. Enjoy next week and no reason to panic, there will be plenty of sunshine laying ahead of us.

Open water swimming event between Koh Samui and Koh Phangan, Saturday 13th May 2017

There will be an Open water swimming event between Koh Samui and Koh Phangan, Saturday 13th May 2017 at the Ibis hotel in Maenam. This is a charity event but it's not for the fainthearted.
The swim distance is 12km in the Samui-Phangan shipping channel and before you can register you need to meet a few prerequisites and rightly so.

The events objectives are threefold and are as follow;
1. Fund contribute to help poor cancer patients via The National Cancer Institute Foundation, Thailand.
2. Inspiration and motivation of a new life via Sport.
3. Improve local quality of life

Open water swimming event between Koh Samui and Koh Phangan, Saturday 13th May 2017

1. Long distance swim 12 km from Koh Pangan to Koh Samui via Koh Samui channel.

2. This event is NOT a competitive event for speed or time record. The focus is to finish the course safely.

3. Organiser team will provide food and drink every 3 km.

4. For the safety, swimmers will separate in to 10 ppl 10 groups, with swim ability.

5. Participants will receive medal and certificate at the end.

6. There is no limit on swim suit, which mean any type of swim suit can be use within a safety suggestion from organiser. Ex wet suit, swim skin, long sleeve t-shirt, etc. (more detail, Please contact us, detail below)

7. Every swimmers must wear an inflatable bouy and a whistle all the time and must be at ready in position to use during the swim event for safety reason.

Open water swimming event between Koh Samui and Koh Phangan, Saturday 13th May 2017

In order to qualify and participate, you need to have;

1. Over 6 km open water swim experience.

Thailand Swimathon 2016 in 6km and 10km catagories participants are accepted. (please send in participation evidence to verify)

Samed 5.5 km in 2016 participants are accepted. (please send in participation evidence to verify)

Long distance Triathlon 140.6 (Swim 3.9km/Bike 180km/Run 42km)

2. Swimming pace 4:00 min/100m during long distance swim (8hr/12km)

3. All swimmers must send in your verified record, certificate or evidence for the committees to approve of your participation before attend the event.

The participation fee is 10,000 Thai Baht but includes a lot, like;

- Accomodation 2 night Twin room

- 4 Meals

- Security team and medical service from top hospital.

- Certificate with wooden frame.

- Medal

- Event sourvenir T-shirt

- Best Open water swim experience in long distance

5th Koh Samui Midnight Run, Saturday 25th March 2017

With great pleasure I can announce the 5th Koh Samui Midnight Run, Saturday 25th March 2017, with start and finish line at the Reggae Pub in Chaweng and some 2000 participants are expected fir this Samui Midnight Run.

It will start exactly at midnight in the night from Saturday to Sunday. Registration opens 1st March at Zazen Boutique resort and information for registration for the 5th Koh Samui Midnight Run, Saturday 25th March 2017 can be found in this link.

Application Fee: To apply for the 5 and 10 km runs there are two(2) fee options;

1. 500 Baht

2. 1,000 Baht - includes entry to the Grand Raffle

The Grand Raffle will take place after the awards ceremony!

The first price will be a brand new scooter!

The race distances are 5km and 10km or one loop through Chaweng or two loops. Straight down beach road in Chaweng with a small detour through the crowded Soi Green Mango!

As each year, it's a charity event and proceeds from the event will be donated to some very worthy causes: firstly, to Koh Samui’s new School for Autistic Children and secondly to the Green Project supported by the Hotel Associations.

5th Koh Samui Midnight Run, Saturday 25th March 2017

Out of the previous four editions, I participated three times and came in second every time in my age category, this year I'm about to change that and have my goal set at winning my age category!

Spark Circus is to visit Koh Samui 20th and 21st January

The Spark Circus is to visit Koh Samui 20th and 21st January at respectively W Resort and Dr Frogs, with a big show on the 20th at W Resort, starting at 8pm.

All four scheduled shows are to raise money for the Burmese refugee children in the North, in Mae Sot, where the Spark circus will go to teach and perform.

Spark Circus is an international nonprofit whose mission it is to promote health, positive well being, and a sense of hope in children who live in disadvantaged communities and living situations. It is their belief that by using educational classes in, circus, music, and performance art they can help to alleviate stress, burden, and fear that so often traps people in a cycle of violence and poverty.

Spark Circus to visit Koh Samui 20th and 21st January

This year the circus has 10 dedicated performers and teachers from; Vietnam, Canada, Australia, Burma, UK & the US.

Spark Circus is a non-profit dedicated to bringing hope and laughter to the lives of thousands of refugee children every year.

Beginning January 14th, the Spark Circus team will assemble on the islands of Koh Samui and Koh Phangan to do shows and raise donations for the project in a Sparkly Circus Bonanza. Following two weeks of fundraising, the team will travel and visit schools and orphanages in Mae Sot, the refugee camp Nu Poe, and the village of Mae Ke Kong for four weeks of playshop’s and intensives.

Spark Circus is a circus performance group who tries to deliver a spectacular extravaganza for children at migrant schools, refugee camps in Thailand, and villages on the Burmese side of the border, as well as, workshops and classes. They also offer classes to local teachers and other interested individuals, striving whenever possible to foster a spirit of community and oneness. It is their hope that they can bring people together and heal some of the emotional wounds the children face through the excitement of the circus arts. 3rd Mad Hatter run in Chaweng, Sunday 16th October 2016

The 3rd Mad Hatter run in Fisherman's Village has been postponed to Sunday 27th November due to the passing away of HM King Bhumibol Adulydej

The 3rd Mad Hatter run in Chaweng, Sunday 16th October 2016 will take place, organised by the four Starwood Hotels on Koh Samui, W Retreat, Vana Belle, Le Meridien and Sheraton.

It's great to see this event entering it's third year. The last two editions I participated in and it looks like I will be able to join this year's edition as well, despite the fact that I will participate in another race on the same day, the Full Moon Marathon on Koh Phangan, and I intend to run the full marathon there, with a 6pm start and 6 hours cut off time, which will be a challenge, considering the hilly route.

3rd Mad Hatter run in Chaweng, Sunday 16th October 2016

This will be the first time that I will participate in two races on the same day, I have run races back to back, on Saturday a race, followed by a race on a Sunday, so this will be a new challenge.

Start and finish for the 3rd Mad Hatter run Running Route;

Starting / Finishing Point : The Wharf Samui (beach road, walking street area)

2 KM race will run through Fisherman Village to Bang Rak road and will have a turning point in front of Bakubung

5 KM race will have the turning point in front of Baan Dalah Resort

10 KM race : same routing as 5 KM, the runners are to run straight on and will reach the turn around point in front of Big Buddha Temple

As each year is the case, this will be a charity event and this year all revenues after expenses will be given to Tessaban 1 Wat Lamai school to support the construction cost of a new building there.

Am looking forward to the event and hope to see many runners on Sunday morning, 16th October at this 'Run to Give'.

Sponsoring my new set of running shoes

Here's a slightly unconventional way to get myself a pair of new running shoes. Two sets of Vibram Five Fingers shoes are walking on their last legs and I need to replace them but don't have the fund to do so. I'm asking for sponsors and donation to get the required 4,000.-THB together.

There's a donation button at the bottom of this page, any support is welcome and can be seen as a token of support and apprecation for the time and dedication I put into this blog.

Holes under the heels, preparing for becoming a bare foot runner?

As a follower and reader of my blog, you may know my love for running by now. It's my hobby and I enjoy it tremendously. However, two pairs of my running shoes are about to disintegrate and short of becoming a complete 100% bare foot runner, which would be my next step and currently only avaialble ption, I hope to be bale to generate enough money from generous donations to be able to get a new pair of Vibram Five Fingers Evo.

The soles have been ripped off and can't be used anymore

Run the Island, Sunday 8th May

Four of my running friends, will attempt to Run the Island, Sunday 8th May in order to raise money for the School for children with special needs and to set a new record for running the ring road around the island.

The Samui Special Needs School, which is currently building their new school premises are in need for money to complete the construction and the initial goal of the runners to raise at least 50,000.-THB has already been achieved, currently they already have raised just over 100,000.-THB and that's before they even start. Well done guys!

Run the Island, Sunday 8th May

Sunday morning at 3am they will start off from Anantara Bophut and they will be escorted by a support vehicle & medical care as safety is their number one priority when running through the early hours and live updates will be made through the Samui Runners Club Facebook page.

Denis and Laurent have already run ultra races, a distance being more than the marathon distance of 42.1km but for Michael and Andrea it will be the first time they will run more than the full marathon distance. It's going to be a challenge especially considering that Koh Samui has some serious hills along the ring road!

Good luck to all four of you and I wish I was there to join you during the run. Unfortunately I'm not on Koh Samui right now and can't participate, this coming Sunday morning I will run a 10km race on Phuket instead and be with them in my thoughts!

8th Samui Bike week, 6-7 May 2016

Next weekend sees already the 8th Samui Bike week, 6-7 May 2016 at Phru Chaweng or Chaweng lake. It's always fun to see lots of great and interesting looking big bikes. Custom is the order of the day. Have a look at pictures of the 2010 event here,

The vent is used for charity and all profit is given to a pre-destined organization. Go out to Chaweng lake and have a look or even take a ride with the big bikes on your own small 100cc bike, it will all add to the fun and nobody will look down on you.

Enjoy the weekend and ride to live and live to ride!

9th Cancer Care run, Saturday 4th June 2016

It's time for the 9th Cancer Care run, Saturday 4th June 2016 in Nathon which once more will be organized by the Four Seasons Resort on Koh Samui.

This year we may well have the nice route back that leads us up the hill, South of Nathon, to turn around and lead behind the main road back into the start area, since the road construction has been completed,

The traditional distances are 2km fun, 5km and 10km races. As each year, it's a charity event.

The Cancer Car run's are held world wide, although on different days, but are all inspired by Terry Fox's Marathon of Hope in 1980 in Canada!

7th Samui Bike Week, 22-23 May 2015

It's time for the 7th Samui Bike Week, 22-23 May 2015, which is slowly but surely making it's mark on the Samui events agenda! Samui Bike Week was started by Screaming Eagle (RIP) and Samui Pirates MC with Ohm from Ohm Big Bikes in Samui as a way of raising money for charity while having some fun

Each year has a great display of various modern and 'old school' bikes among other and it's all for charity. The bikes on display alone are worth checking them out and visiting the event site.

The 7th Samui Bike Week, 22-23 May 2015 has also a very interesting ban line up; Blackhead, Paang Nakalin Kingsak and Taxi will hit the stage 23rd May. I'm not sure yet where that stage will be, the poster is unfortunately not very clear about that. Any updates will be mentioned here!

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 9th May, 2015

Today's weather;

There's a thin cloud layer hovering over Koh Samui and I can only hope that it doesn't get as warm as the previous days! Current temp at 7am is 28.4C

The charity cup cakes at Central Festival yesterday, as baked by Centara Grand Beach Resort as charity for the school for children with special needs. 1300 were made and sold

Yesterday saw once more a very hot day but with some cloud coverage at times and with rain and thunder last night around 10pm. Max temp reached 33C

The forecast has changed a bit and now mostly cloudy days are predicted with occasional tropical showers, just like a typical May. As of Wednesday the wind may pick up.

8th Four Seasons Cancer Care charity fun run, 22nd August 2015

The date has been set for the 8th Four Seasons Cancer Care charity fun run, 22nd August 2015. This is usually held at Nathon in a nice race track with a 5km and 10km race to choose from.

As far as things look like right now, I may be actually on the island and be able to participate for a 5th consecutive time in this 8th Four Seasons Cancer Care charity fun run, 22nd August 2015.

The 10km race will typically start near the Seatran pier and go out up the hill towards Maenam, backtrack a little bit and go off into the backstreet , slightly hilly alleys (or soi's as they are called in Thai) to end up at the Seatran pier again. A nice race track with some nice green views.

There will be two more races coming up on the island, that I know of right now, 13th September will see a 10km race organized by Kamalaya and 11th October will see a follow up 10km race organized by the Starwood hotels, which last year was held as the 'Mad Hatter' race. For these two races I may not be on the island. As of now, I don't have any knowledge about a repeat Koh Samui marathon which was held last year in December.

Charity Cake Sales at Central Festival Chaweng 8th May 2015

On the occasion of the 19th Anniversary celebration of Centara Grand Beach Resort Samui in Chaweng, they will have for the second consecutive year running a 'Charity Cake Sales at Central Festival Chaweng 8th May 2015'.

You can buy tickets at 100.-THB a ticket at Centara Grand Beach in Chaweng or on the day at Central Festival and get one of the 19 meter long cup cake line, the longest line of cup cakes on Koh Samui!

The event will take place on Friday May 8th from 5pm to 8pm and all proceeds will be donated to the Special Needs School Samui, a very worthy case!

12th October 2014, Mad Hatter Hotel Charity run at Chaweng lake

Three big hotels on Koh Samui have come up with a nice variation on a run; the Mad Hatter run, to be held 12th October 2014 at Chaweng Lake at the dark hour of 5.40am. It's a charity run, more on this in a moment.

The three hotels in questions are W Retreat Koh Samui, Le Meridien Koh Samui Resort & Spa and Vana Belle.

The idea of the run is that all participants are encouraged to wear a fancy hat while in the race. Additionally, there's also a ‘Hat Contest’ after the race for the participants to win many prizes.

Funds raised through the Hotel Charity Run will go towards Wat Bhundarikaram School (Wat Pang Bua) for improving school infirmary, library and other important projects of the school.

The registration fee is THB 300 for an adult and THB 200 for a child (age up to 19 years old). As part of the registration package, participants will receive a participating kit which includes a lucky draw coupon, a food voucher, a marathon t-shirt, and a welcome bag package.

The race is divided into three (3) categories as followed:

1) Fun Run – 2 km

2) Mini Marathon 5 km

3) Mini Marathon 10 km

In each category (except for 2 km Fun Run), it is also subdivided by genders and ages:

A) 12- 19 years old / Male and Female

B) 20 – 39 years old / Male and Female

C) 40 years old and over / Male and Female

I wonder what the route will be, it will not surprise me if the same route as the Samui's Midnight Run will be used, there are not that many options to easily split up a 5 and 10km race in downtwon Chaweng! I'm sure more news will follow.

I'm very happy to see a race being added to Samui's very thin racing calendar and even better to know that I will be on the island and able to participate! See you 12th October!
