Goodbye to November 2020

Hello there, it's about time to say goodbye to November 2020! Yes, we're a day early and yes, last month I forgot to write a 'Goodbye to October blog'! 

The month of November usually means rainy season on Koh Samui and it's archipelago. Not so much this year though. Sure, we had a few very hard rain showers. Some accompanied by very strong winds. However, they never lasted very long. During a classic Samui rainy season, we can have days on an end with rain. Varying from hard to a drizzle and back to hard again. Nothing of that so far this year. Maybe some of that may be in the making for the first December week.

However, back at the farm, this year's November had plenty of sunny days and partially clouded skies. Actually a very nice November in my book. Much better than your average rainy season November.

On the other hand, Covid is still taking it's toll on the island. Basically, the longer tourist areas like Koh Samui have to wait before the borders open, the harder it gets. The current Thai government stated last week that borders for tourism as we knew it, won't open until Thailand is vaccinated. This won't be until mid 2021 at the earliest! The hardest times are still to come I'm afraid. Sadly, more desperate times are most likely still ahead of us. If you want to help, please feel free to make a donation. Goodbye to November 2020

This is how November also can look on Koh Samui. Not your typical rainy days! However, a beautiful, partially cloudy sky at Laem Sor. This picture is taken at Laem Sor Pagoda. The pagoda is directly behind me. This November has been fairly mild and enjoyable. Despite having a few very hard rain showers and windy moments!

November also saw a few events around Koh Samui. What stood out for me personally were the two races. Mid November the first ever Monkeys Trail. This Sunday the Nathon hospital run. 

There was a also a body building event at Central Festival among others.

Goodbye to November 2020

This morning the yearly Nathon Hospital run was held. Instead of running or jogging around the island, as in the two previous years, there was a 5k and 15k race. I participate in the 15k race and came in 5th overall in a new personal best on this distance. There were no free t-shirts, medals or trophies but it was fun nonetheless. Needless to say that I'm happy with my result.

Stay safe everybody. There will come an end to all this madness. Until that moment in time, see you next month!

Sunday morning in Phuket and time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 6th May 2019 – 12th May 2019. The long slow distance run is still to come, in the afternoon. After I finish teaching the current PADI IDC on Phuket.

It's nice and sunny early in the morning. It promises to be another hot day. It's relentless! 28C already at 7.30 in the early morning!

Phuket is looking very similar. 28C early in the morning with a slightly cloudy sky.

Last week it was hot with hardly any rain on Koh Samui. Maximum temperatures ranged from 35C to 27C. It felt at times a lot warmer than the measured 35C. A nice start to this month of May.

The new roundabout at Chalong circle on Phuket is almost ready. Here you can see the brand new clock tower, still not completely finished. The tunnel under the roundabout is also almost completed. Hopefully it will give a much needed relief to the local traffic.

Next week is looking nice again. Maybe some rain tomorrow but the rest of the week should be dry. Partially cloudy and warm is predicted with more blue in the sky towards next weekend. Don't forget the sun lotion this week. Especially coral and ocean friendly sunscreen lotion!

It' Sunday morning and the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 22nd April 2019 – 28th April 2019 is due. My long Sunday morning run is in the bag, on Koh Lanta and later this morning I will hit the road to go back to Koh Samui.

Talking about Koh Samui! It's partially cloudy this morning with a current temperature of 29C and rising at 8am. The heat onslaught continues.

On Koh Lanta the temperature dropped at last after two weeks of hot to hotter temperatures. It rained once, when I arrived two weeks ago on Sunday evening. And it started to rain last night and this morning. My morning run was completely in the run and it was lovely. Cool again, at last. Current temperature at 8am is 25C

Last week it was still very hot around Koh Samui with no relief. Maximum temperatures reached 34C but it felt a lot warmer, well within the mid forties range. Minimum ranged dropped only to 29C at night. It was steaming hot, but not as hot as in Central and Northern Thailand.

Believe it or not, but this is Koh Lanta. Towards the Southern part of the island is this brand new 4 to 6 lane highway lookalike. Construction at other parts of the island is going on for a similar new road. Considering that during my first ever trip to Thailand, way back in the mid nineties, I stayed at Kaw Kwang beach and it took me a 15 minute walk to get to Ban Saladan. I don't remember any main road at all. The times they are a changing.

The forecast for next week shows a bit of relief. It should be mostly partially cloudy skies. Not much rain however. except maybe for Monday morning. The intense heat is slowly letting off though.

Sunday morning and guess what, it's time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update;25th March 2019 – 31st March 2019.

Koh Samui is nice and sunny with a partially cloudy sky. At 10am it's already 31C and rising. It feels a lot warmer already!

Although I'm teaching a PADI IDC in Khao Lak, this morning I'm on Phuket. I participated in a 10 mile race at Thanyapura. The Supersports 10 mile race. I finished 5th in my age category 50-59. This is a good result for Phuket, where there's always a strong field of runners.
Yesterday I participated in an afternoon beach run in Bang Sak, near Khao Lak. A busy weekend.
Here on Phuket it's fairly cloudy an also 31C
Within half an hour or so, I will be on my way back to Khao Lak.

Last week saw a nice week on Koh Samui. The weather was good, sunny and hot. Maximum temperatures ranged from 25C at night to 32C during the daytime. It felt a lot warmer though.

The Thai schools are now all on their summer holiday, so traffic should ease up for the next two months. Well, at least a little bit.

The forecast for next week is looking good. Partially cloudy until Wednesday and full on sun possibly after that. Hot and hotter! Day by day! April has a splendid start it seems!

Next weekend I will be back on Koh Samui. I hope to see you on Saturday at the 7th Samui Midnight run and on Sunday morning at the trail run in Maenam.

Goodbye to March 2019

Goodbye to March 2019

Just one more day to go but already time to say Goodbye to March 2019 on this blog.

It has been a good month, with plenty of sunshine. There were actually a few days of rain as well. They were needed and welcomed! At least by us residents. After six weeks of no rain, the wells start to run dry and rain is needed. Besides those few days with some rain, it was hot. Each day seemed to get hotter. Plenty of sunshine and as the picture below shows, also plenty of days being partially clouded.

All in all a very good month, kind of what you expect during March on Koh Samui. Not like eight years ago, in 2011. During that March Samui experienced some of the worst floods it ever had. Check one link here. Plenty of more links on this website or on my Samui blog Facebook page.

Goodbye to March 2019

In the South of the island you can find Laem Sor Pagoda. This is a view of the back of the pagoda. Interesting island history to find here. There's a building with glass walls that houses the boat on which a monk landed on Koh Samui in the 1940's.

It was nice to spend time on Koh Samui, being home with the family this month. 

Event wise, it started with a half marathon in Surat Thani and will end with a 10 mile race tomorrow on Phuket. Right now I'm in Khao Lak teaching a PADI IDC. 

Next month will see the hottest month of the year on Koh Samui, April. This month will also bring Songkran, the Thai New Year.

Come Saturday to Sunday night 6th April, the 7th Koh Samui Midnight Run will take place. Start and finish at the Reggae pub in Chaweng. 

Early the next morning there will be a trail run in Maenam's Soi 1, the Soi where immigration is. A 5km, 10km and 30km trail run are on the menu. Hope to see you at either or both events!

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 12^th November – 18^th November 2018 

Sunday afternoon and here we go again with the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 12th November – 18th November 2018. 

Long Sunday very early morning run done in Surat Thani and back on Koh Samui again. Time for a wedding celebrant job later this afternoon.

It's almost 14.00 and it's 29C with a partially cloudy sky. Sometimes there's sunshine and occasionally a short shower floats over. Some parts of the island are dry, whilst other parts are getting showered on. Life on Koh Samui during November and we're blessed so far with this month, since it can be a lot worse.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 12th November – 18th November 2018; Laem Sor temple, the boat on the hill! Construction is going on at the same temple grounds for a new building. And yes, this is how Samui's sky sometimes looked last week! Mostly during the mornings.

Last week was a real mixed bag around Koh Samui. We had sunny mornings and we had rainy afternoons. Nothing too bad though, no major floods except for some flash floods. These flash floods clear as soon as the rain stops, within an hour or faster.

Maximum temperatures ranged from 31C to 24C being the lowest recorded temperature last week.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 12th November – 18th November 2018; View from the Don Sak chedi. You can spot the chedi on top of a mountain when you arrive on a ferry, coming from Koh Samui at Don Sak port. This is also how Samui's sky looked like plenty of times, last week. Mostly during the afternoons. The next days and weeks I will be coming through Don Sak, on my way to or coming from Surat Thani. At least each weekend for the next 3-4 weekends. Also including visits to Khao Lak and Phuket. Lots of travelling and work ahead.

The forecast for next week looks very similar. Except for Tuesday and Wednesday when a storm is passing over parts of South Thailand. Koh Samui will be on the fringes of this storm and expect some rain and increased wind.

All in all it still looks very nice for a Koh Samui November. Enjoy the breaks! Hopefully we get away with an easy rainy season this year.

It's Sunday afternoon, just past noon and that means it's time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 18th September – 24th September, 2017.

Today it has been mostly cloudy which is accompanied by a very agreeable 28.6 temperature around noon.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 18th September – 24th September, 2017; Curry pastes at the market in Plai Laem. Plenty of options, tastes and colors available.

Last week saw a nice week, with partially clouded skies and two days with some rain. At times there was a strong wind, towards the end of the week. Max temperatures ranged between 29C on Friday and 34C on Tuesday.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 18th September – 24th September, 2017; Group picture of the runners and children that benefited from the'North to South' charity run, which I participated in yesterday. 32km from Aryaburi in the North of the island all the way down to Laem Sor Pagoda in the South of the island in 3 hours and 13 minutes. The six runners managed to get 55,000.-THB together for the underprivileged children, for their new accommodation.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 18th September – 24th September, 2017; Today was the yearly 'Run to Give', aka as the 'Mad Hatter' run at The Wharf in Fisherman's Village. After yesterday's 32km charity run I was happy to participate in a shorter run. Advertised as a 5km race, we ended up running 4.17km and I managed this in 18'30 and ended up as 9th all over and 3rd in my age category 40+

The forecast for next week a strong wind blowing in until tomorrow and fading out by Wednesday, accompanied by some tropical showers. Come Thursday we may be able to enjoy a bit more sun although the skies over Koh Samui will be mostly partially cloudy. Not great but nice weather for this time of the year.

Welcome to January 2016

Welcome to January 2016

It's indeed time to wish you 'Welcome to January 2016' and give you the lowdown on the general weather conditions around Koh Samui during January.

In general you can expect good and nice, sunny skies during January and this year all the signs are looking good for the first half of the month to be exactly like that.

During 2008, 2011 and 2014 the month of January was not as great and last year saw a wet first half of January and a sunnier last part of the month.

The nice thing of January is that even with the sunshine, it doesn't get too hot, maximal temperatures range in the lower 30C range, which keeps it nice and cool.

For work I will be on Koh Lanta during the middle of the month until shortly before the end of the month.

The last couple of days of January will also see a visit of one of the Thai box jelly fish experts, who is scheduled to give presentations to members of the THA (Tourist Hotel Association) of the Koh Samui chapter and to provide training to various hotel staff.

Enjoy the month and the sunny skies that are predicted for Koh Samui, keep an eye out for the Samui Ride and Run event on January 24th in Nathon (even better, make sure to participate) and once more 'Welcome to January 2016'.

Today's weather;

There's overcast this morning around Koh Samui but it's dry and there's still a bit of a breeze. It should clear up later today though. Current temp at 7am is 27C

Yesterday saw a lot more clouds in Samui's sky than I initially anticipated, our little peninsula was cloud free in the morning but not many other parts of the island were. It was a mixed bag of clouds and sunshine until around 3pm when we had rain for a good hour or so. Max temp reached 31C

The forecast has changed ever so slightly again, Friday may see some very strong wind but the wind may drop come Sunday and after the weekend, the partially clouded (and fairly sunny skies) may also carry some raindrops with them in the few clouds that will be around.

Today's weather;

We have a fresh wind blowing over Koh Samui this morning with some nice blue skies and a few isolated clouds. Today should stay like this and we should have a nice and not too warm day. Current temp at 7am is 28C

Yesterday saw a lovely day with partly blue skies and some clouds in it, laced with some cooling wind. It remained dry all day until around 9.30pm when there was a shower. Max temp reached 31C

The forecast for the next ten days looks really good! Mostly partially clouded, meaning; sunny skies and occasionally a shower, maybe a bit more rain tomorrow. The monsoon really seems to have left so start enjoying the beaches and sights around the island again!

Koh Samui is under a heavy cloud layer this morning with some grey clouds looming over the ocean and a nice breeze. Most likely it will remain mostly cloudy but dry all day long. Current temp at 7am is 26.4C

Yesterday saw a nice and sunny day under a partly clouded sky. Some more clouds moved in during the afternoon but it stayed dry and we had a max temp of 33C

The forecast predicts a very strong wind over the next three days and rain over the next four days. Next weekend it start to ease up again and after next weekend we may have a couple of sunny days coming up.

Today's weather;

An almost perfect blue sky is shaping up over Koh Samui this morning and it's already a stunning 29C at 7am in the morning!

In Khao Lak it looks very similar with a nice blue sky in the making. Current temp at 7am here is 26C

The forecast changed just a little bit, nice and sunny until Songkran day, Monday 13th April, when it may be cloudy and actually have some rain. That will make the waterfights cold!

Today's weather;

It's a bit hazy around Koh Samui this morning but another sunny and warm day is in the making! Current temp at 7am is 27.8C

At Panagsama beach near Moalboal in the Philippines we have internet connections back and it's under a beautiful blue sky with a current temp at 8am local time of 27C

Yesterday saw once more a nice and sunny day and it keeps growing warmer almost each day. Max temp reached 30.2C

The forecast for the next seven days changed a little bit and shows a little bit more cloud cover until after the weekend. After that it should be almost cloudless again.

Today's weather;

Koh Samui has mostly overcast to show for this morning with an occasional blue spot. Current temp at 7am is 26.3C

Yesterday it was really nice and sunny during the morning and day time but as soon as darkness hit it started to rain for a while. Max temp reached 32.5C

The forecast shows plenty of wind coming up with a peak on Friday evening and night. Rain will come along with the wind, mainly over the weekend.

Today's weather;

It's mainly overcast around Koh Samui this morning. Current temp at 7am is 26C

Putta Chedi in Laem Sor  

Yesterday saw for the most part blue skies with a few clouds in it although at moments there was complete overcast. It remained dry and warm with a max temp of 32.7C

The forecast changed drastically and now we have some windy but dry days until Sunday afternoon when strong winds kick in for the remainder of next week and more or less non stop rain as of Wednesday. Let's see and wait how this develops, many times the forecast looks much worse compared to the actual circumstances.

Today's weather;

It's mostly cloudy around Koh Samui although earlier on there was a little bit of sunshine in our part of the island. Current temp at 7am is 26C

Laem Chor Chedi, as blogged about in 2007 and 2010

Yesterday it was nice until the afternoon started, strong wind came up and after a very strong blow through, around 3pm, we had some rain, It rain wet-tish all afternoon with occasional drizzles and on and off strong wind blows. Max temp reached 30.4C

The forecast is shaping up fairly nicely in contrast reports earlier this week. Strong wind culminates over the weekend with rain, but not as much anymore as originally predicted. Come Tuesday it's all blue skies again!

Laem Sor Chedi, part 2

Laem Sor Chedi, part 2

It's been 2 and a half years when I wrote part 1 and the long wait was not intentional but just happened. Earlier in January this year we visited Laem Sor's Chedi again and this time the construction was completed which was going on during our earlier visit.

The road sign that indicates where the Chedi and Pagoda are is easily overlooked, so keep your eyes open when you're on the road in that part of the island.

Now in full glory and with Buddha images and sculptures in all places, it's a nice view and look. When we were visiting there was a small ceremony going on and a tent was set up in front of the chedi with Buddha images.

Very nice was the room with the boat inside, about 100 meters away from the chedi. The room was now filled and the boat surrounded with small boats, for good luck.

There's now also a wax image inside the big boat of the the monk sailed the original boat during World War II from Surat Thani to Samui.

Whilst on a trip around the island this is a beautiful and quiet place to stop and enjoy the scenery of the chedi, the pagoda on top of the hill (which I still haven't visited) and the Temple or Wat that is in the jungle nearby and it has a free entrance.

Buddha Chedi Laem Sor, part 1

Part of our trip last Saterday included a visit to the Buddha Chedi Laem Sor.

In all of my 8 years, I never visited here, as a few other places we visited that day, like Wat Kiri Wongkaram and the Natural museum in Lamai. The main reason being that they're quite far away from the North Eastern part of the island where my family and me live. However, all the sites and temples we visited, are well worth to visit again and this also counts for Buddha Chedi Laem Sor.


As this map tells, there's a lot to be seen here. This part is only about the Chedi or Pagoda. There's a temple here as well, beautifully located in the woods/jungle, similar to Wat Suanthamma at the Hin Lad waterfalls in Nathon. I will post about the temple at a later date and there's another Pagoda nearby build on a mountain, which we couldn't visit this time around due to the weather conditions and the road up the mountain not being safe right now.

Here's a picture of the Pagoda. It's re-construction is almost finished, marble plates are still being placed around the floor at his moment. Next year, there will be a 100 year memorial celebration for and at this place, definitely something to look forward to.

The Pagoda is covered in small yellow tiles which makes it look like it's made of gold from a distance. This optical illusion probably works better when it's nice and sunny!

Not far away from the Pagoda, is a small building which houses a boat. It's possibly just 200 meters away from the Pagoda. The story as far as I could gather so far is that a monk from Surat Thani had to flee Surat Thani during the World War II area and sailed all the way to Samui in this boat and arrived at this spot all alone.

It's finally a picture which makes me happy with the reflection of the window, since it looks like the boat is back into the water, at least half way.

All in all this is a very nice place to visit, quiet and relaxed and various things to explore in real close vicinity, the Pagoda, the Temple and another Pagoda up on the hill, something I have to get back for myself.
