Goodbye to November 2020

Hello there, it's about time to say goodbye to November 2020! Yes, we're a day early and yes, last month I forgot to write a 'Goodbye to October blog'! 

The month of November usually means rainy season on Koh Samui and it's archipelago. Not so much this year though. Sure, we had a few very hard rain showers. Some accompanied by very strong winds. However, they never lasted very long. During a classic Samui rainy season, we can have days on an end with rain. Varying from hard to a drizzle and back to hard again. Nothing of that so far this year. Maybe some of that may be in the making for the first December week.

However, back at the farm, this year's November had plenty of sunny days and partially clouded skies. Actually a very nice November in my book. Much better than your average rainy season November.

On the other hand, Covid is still taking it's toll on the island. Basically, the longer tourist areas like Koh Samui have to wait before the borders open, the harder it gets. The current Thai government stated last week that borders for tourism as we knew it, won't open until Thailand is vaccinated. This won't be until mid 2021 at the earliest! The hardest times are still to come I'm afraid. Sadly, more desperate times are most likely still ahead of us. If you want to help, please feel free to make a donation. Goodbye to November 2020

This is how November also can look on Koh Samui. Not your typical rainy days! However, a beautiful, partially cloudy sky at Laem Sor. This picture is taken at Laem Sor Pagoda. The pagoda is directly behind me. This November has been fairly mild and enjoyable. Despite having a few very hard rain showers and windy moments!

November also saw a few events around Koh Samui. What stood out for me personally were the two races. Mid November the first ever Monkeys Trail. This Sunday the Nathon hospital run. 

There was a also a body building event at Central Festival among others.

Goodbye to November 2020

This morning the yearly Nathon Hospital run was held. Instead of running or jogging around the island, as in the two previous years, there was a 5k and 15k race. I participate in the 15k race and came in 5th overall in a new personal best on this distance. There were no free t-shirts, medals or trophies but it was fun nonetheless. Needless to say that I'm happy with my result.

Stay safe everybody. There will come an end to all this madness. Until that moment in time, see you next month!

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 16th November – 22nd November 2020

Welcome to another Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 16th November – 22nd November 2020. It's Monday morning around 10am. We have sunny skies and a current temperature of 29C. Very much unlike an average Samui November!

Las week we had plenty of sunny days and moments. We also had a few showers. Sometimes when it rained, it was real rainy season rain as well. Hard and relentless. Most of the time it was just normal showers. But so far, not for days or weeks on an end. For a Koh Samui November, it has been mild.

The maximum temperature reached 32C. The minimum temperature dropped to to the lower twenties Celsius.

The gold shop in Big C has closed now as well. In 2008 I wrote a very popular blog post about Thai gold. The pictures in this blog are from this gold shop. Covid is still raging in our island. Not the disease itself. More the side effects. More and more shops are still closing down. Each day, each week. The shopping malls like Bog C and Tesco Lotus, let alone Central Festival, are at times very quiet. Almost deserted. Makro seems to be doing well, but even there, they don't get the same turn over as before Covid. The island, just like the whole tourist industry related location in Thailand, are struggling big time. It doesn't look like the borders are about to open soon neither. If you want to visit Koh Samui or Thailand, you need to hang in there a little bit longer.

The forecast for next week looks very similar as last week. A couple of days may be nice and have plenty of sunshine. Combined with a few showers! However, come next weekend, the wind may pick up and rain may intensify. Saturday may be very wet and the night from Sunday to Monday plus all of next Monday may be watery as well. Still, nothing like how a November can be on Samui. 

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 16th November – 22nd November 2020

November rain on Koh Samui. At times we have the typical November, relentless rain showers. For minutes to half an hour it rains like crazy. Creating flash floods all over the place, just to return to 'normal' within moment after the rain stops. It is however a very enjoyable November considering it's rainy season. Other years we have hard rain for days on an end. Having said that, the last week of November and the first two weeks of December can still wreak havoc! We're not there yet!

This coming Sunday there's a run at Nathon hospital. Entrance is free. Registration starts at 5am and the race is supposed to start at 6am. I believe that when I see it with just one hour of registration time. Nonetheless, come and join the fun for a 5km or 15km race, run or walk. No medals, no trophies, all open category.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 9^th November – 15^th November 2020

Tuesday morning already, so high time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 9th November – 15th November 2020.

It's been an interesting week. Most of the week was sunny but windy. Except for Thursday and Friday when we had a taste of the rainy season. Rain all day long pretty much. Saturday and Sunday however, the sun broke out again. This November start was a bit of an unusual November. Much more sunshine than in previous years.

On Sunday I also ran the Monkeys Trail 26km route. A hard and touch race through the Maenam mountains and jungle. More on that later.

On this Tuesday morning, we have a few clouds, but it's also fairly sunny. At 11.30am it's 31C.

The two rainy days caused quite some flash floods at the usual locations in the Bophud area, along the ring road. Over the weekends all water disappeared however.

Maximum temperature hit 32C. The lowest reached 21C!

On to Covid and Samui. It's still not good. Samui is now Covid free again, but more and more people are still leaving the island. A small and good restaurant within 200 meters of our house has now also closed it's doors. Too many shop houses and houses for living are empty. Even in our residential area of the island. This coming weekend will be another, government ordered, long weekend. However, this will be good and beneficial to about 10 hotels, restaurants or bars around the island. The 10 that are popular with the Bangkok crowd. The rest of the island that still operates a business will barely notice and increase in turn over.

The forecast for next week looks fairly good for this time of the year. Partially cloudy and a few showers. Which for a November on Koh Samui is not too shabby! However, having said that, next weekends may see some prolonged showers and another peek into the rainy season.

Still nothing to get too worried about. Plenty of rain breaks possibly with a few sun beams on top as well.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 9^th November – 15^th November 2020

An action picture of me at last Sunday's Monkeys Trail, 26km race. There were also 5km, 38-, 60 and 100km races on. The 60km and 100km races started on Saturday. My 26km race was the most popular, after the 5k run with some 700 or such participants. From the 300 registered participants, only around 50% made it within the 7 hours cut off time. There were 1080 meters ascent to manage as well. I did well, all over I came in at 7th place and in the gender ranking I was 6th. A bit above expectation, but I gladly take it any day! During the las, very technical kilometer, I managed to pick up 3 runners from my race. Very happy with that! All in all, a well organized race. Dates for 2021 are 26th and 27th June. Plenty of time to start practicing!

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 2nd November – 8th November 2020

Welcome to another Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 2nd November – 8th November 2020. It's a cloudy Monday morning. At 11.30am it's 29C and we already had a few showers this morning.

Due to a cold, I missed my long Sunday run. Just one week before the Monkey Trail event is being held here on Koh Samui. Today I feel already better and could manage a short and easy 7km run.

Most of last week was actually very nice. Not like you would expect during a November. Only yesterday, Sunday, we had some afternoon rain. Other parts of the island may have had short and/or small showers though. The rest of the week was dry and partially sunny and a bit cloudy.

The maximum temperature hit 34C. The minimum temperature got stuck at 23C during the night time.

Regarding Covid19. The French woman who tested positive two weeks ago, has now been released from the government hospital in Nathon. Most likely she got infected in her quarantine hotel. This specific hotel in Bangkok lost it's quarantine status because of not being able to uphold hygiene standards. Koh Samui however, is Covid free again.

Other than that, it's still pretty desperate on Koh Samui. It's quiet and too many houses, rooms and shops are empty. Up for rent of sale.

In Thailand now occasionally people get tested positive. Last week one person in Krabi. It still seems very much under control though. However, the tourism industry keeps suffering. More and more shops and business will have to close forever very soon. Simply because they can't sustain such long periods of no or limited income. As a result, still people keep going or rather moving back to the mainland. On the upside. there are no traffic jams anymore around the ring road!

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 2nd November – 8th November 2020

View from Plai Laem towards the Bang Rak Seatran ferry pier. Do you notice the sunken long tail boat? One fisherman must be very unhappy, seeing his engine being messed up by the salt water. It will take some effort to get the boat out of the water and clean the engine.

Next week's forecast is slightly getting in line with your usual rainy season November. In the beginning and middle of the week, the wind will pick up. Today and tomorrow some showers. Towards the weekend a few more showers, with a very wet Friday and Saturday being predicted. That will make the Monkey Trail race around the Maenam hills and jungle more challenging.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 17^th August – 23^rd August 2020

Back again with another Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 17th August – 23rd August 2020. Sunday morning, early rise! My long run started at 5am this morning. 18.4km with a 5'25 pace. Nice and satisfying. My fourth week into a 12 week training program done. Can't wait to start racing again. My last race was on 26th January at Rajjaphraba Dam. One of two races I was able to participate in this year. Really looking forward to 18th October for a 15km trail run in Nathon. On 15th November there's the Monkey trail on Koh Samui. I will be running a 26km race. Come 20th December there will be a 5km race in Nathon. Hopefully one or two more races will materialize on the island before the end of the year!

After a couple of rainy days, it's time to get ready for a hot one today. At 8.30am it's already 29C. However it feels like 34C!

Last week it was a lot wetter then I expected. Plenty of night time rain and a couple of day time showers were part of last weeks inventory. On the other hand, there were also a few humid and warm afternoons. The maximum temperature reached 34C a few times, but was mostly around 33C. The minimum temperature dropped to 22C in the beginning of last week, but was mostly steady at 23-24C.

Covid19 keeps ruling over Koh Samui though. Not with infections. Not at all. However, the borders are to be kept shut indefinitely. On the other hand, there's talk of allowing citizens of five countries to visit Koh Samui.  However, arrive in Thailand with Thai airways. Have a Covid test at Suvarnabhumi. Immediately connect to Koh Samui and have another test. Go in a hotel quarantine for 2 weeks, After 1 week you're allowed to leave the room. After two weeks you're allowed to leave the hotel, with a special traceable wristband.

That just doesn't sound too appealing to me. Maybe for people who can't enter Thailand, due to their visa situation, it may be a way to stay with their beloved ones. Providing, they are allowed to stay in country.

Domestic travel is still heavily promoted. The first weekend in September is bound to be busy, with the Friday and Monday being days off.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 17^th August – 23^rd August 2020

The Namuang waterfall 1 is looking good. It's part of our milder rainy season right now. Consequently, the water is cascading nicely down and the basin is filled. Plenty of kids and folk relaxing and swimming at or in the basin. Unfortunately our favorite is closed at the waterfall.

Next week's weather prediction is looking good once more. Hardly any rain predicted at all. Not too much clouds either. Towards the end of the week, the wind may increase a bit. Let's see and wait if it all works out.

Hang in there, it's tough. I don't think we hit rock bottom on Samui yet. However, there have to be better times at the horizon somewhere, sometime!

Sunday morning and here we are with one more Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 20th July – 26th July 2020.

The long slow distance Sunday morning run is in the bag. I'm at the end of 3 weeks being back into running again. A 16km run was on the menu this morning. Nice and sweet.

At 10.20am it's partially cloudy and 31C. A nice and fairly hot day is in the making. Time to hit the beach later this afternoon. How about Choengmon beach? Our favorite beach in our neck of the woods. First however, we need to wait a bit for the sun to cool down a bit.

Last week the maximum temperatures hit 34C just one time. 2 days ago to be exactly. The rest of the week it was either 32C or 33C. On the other hand, the minimum temperature didn't drop below 24C.

A few days we saw some rain, especially in the beginning of the week. However, many times I saw dark clouds over the inland. There surely was some more rain around the island. Not in the Plai Laem area though.

With plenty of sunshine, it was a nice July week. Fairly average I would say for a July week on Koh Samui.

Covid is still wreaking havoc on the island though. Although there may be a slight increase in domestic tourism over this long weekend, during the week it's crazy quiet around the island. More and more shops are up for rent. Plenty of people are still moving back to their homes on the mainland. There's also no immediate sight when borders will open again. The emergency decree has been extended for another month.
On the other hand, students are staging demonstrations at the moment. Not only in Bangkok but in various other cities as well. Worthwhile to keep an eye out on to see where this leads to.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 13^th July – 19^th July 2020

Here we are, another Sunday morning and the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 13th July – 19th July 2020.

It's been my second week of full running again. This week I increased my weekly mileage from 44km to 55km. This morning I ran a 14km route. Slowly I'm getting back on track and it feels good.

It's just before 10am and it's already 33C. Just like yesterday it's already very hot this early in the morning. 

Last week saw a few showers but towards the end of the week the temperature rose and it was very hot.

The maximum temperature last week reached all week long 33C. That is except for Friday when it reached 35C. The minimum was all week long 24C. With another exception, Monday and Friday night it dropped to 22C,

Another nice week and not so typical for the current mild rainy season. Actually better than average i would say.

The effects of Covid are still being felt around the island. Although we now are 99 days Covid free in a row, there's still no tourists around. People are still leaving the island to live on the mainland, where it's cheaper for them. More shops are still closing down. On the other hand, hotels start to slowly open up again. Domestic tourism is heavily promoted. Thailand's most famous blogger, Richard Barrow, is currently visiting Koh Samui and Koh Phangan.

For the up and coming week, the forecast looks really good. A few mild early morning showers and hardly any wind. This should make for some great sunny and hot days. Wish you were here and you wish you were here! Looking forward to a time when it's safe to ease the travel restrictions. For the time being, hardship is on the menu with no income for many people with stakes in the tourist industry.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 25^th May – 31^st May 2020

Last Sunday of this month and time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 25th May – 31st May 2020.

No long run today/ I'm curing a inner thigh injury. Later this week I hope to be out on the road again. In the meantime I'm doing some weights and indoor cycling training.

Today it's partially cloudy during the morning. Sometimes some sunshine, sometimes clouds. It's humid and hot though! Current temperature at 14.00am is 32C and it's cloudy. Rain is in the air.

Last week the maximum temperature reached a stunning 35C. This in combination with the humidity makes for hot and very sweaty days! The minimum actually dropped for the duration of half an hour, just that once, to 23C. It was mostly 25-26C with a handful times 24C.

We had a few showers during the week as well. Much needed and enjoyed!

Tomorrow, 1st Jun, a new round of lock down easing is going to happen. Pattaya beaches are to open again. On Koh Samui, the beaches never were really closed down, as far as I know. Bangkok Air increases to 4 daily flights to/from Bangkok. Massage places are allowed to open again. Movie theaters with restriction (no pop corn!!) are also opening up.
There's talk of opening completely up on 1st July. With international flight arrivals being allowed again and lifting of all restrictions. Including the emergency decree. Let's cross our fingers.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 27th April – 3rd May 2020

Good morning on this lovely Sunday and welcome to the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 27th April – 3rd May 2020.

Firstly a nice 23km lsd (long slow distance) Sunday morning run is in the can. Secondly, it's lovely out there. Partially cloudy and 31C at 9am. It's going to be a hot day again.

Last week saw a few rainy days early on in the week. The last 3 days however have been a lot nicer again. The sun came back out again and it was warm, or rather hot. The maximum temperature last week hit 32C. That happened only yesterday! The minimum temperature barely hit 24C a few times. We had some nice and cool days early on this week. Lovely!

The Covid19 situation seems to improve on Koh Samui and the province of Surat Thani. Since 22 days in a row there has been no new infection case. As of today, alcohol is on sale again. However, restaurants and hotels and such are not allowed to serve alcohol. Hotels are also allowed to open again, with a few restrictions. Slowly, step by step, the lock down is being lifted. Come 15th May, Bangkok Air will start with 2 daily flights between Bangkok and Koh Samui.

Next week, the weather forecast is looking good. Mostly partially cloudy. Which means partially sunny as well. Hot and no rain. Hang in there folks. I'm looking forward to the lifting of travel restrictions. Just hope that airfare ticket prices won't go through the roof, due to physical distancing. Planes may have to travel at two thirds capacity and somebody will have to pay for the loss of income.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 6^th April – 12^th April 2020

Another Sunday morning and time to welcome the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 6th April – 12th April 2020.
My Sunday morning lsd, long slow distance run is in the can. The training program is stopped and it's all about maintenance now. Continue to eat healthy and keep exercising. In my case, running. Working on my immune system, the best defense you have for this current corona virus, Covid19.

Covid19 has a massive impact on a tourist destination like Koh Samui and it's surrounding islands. All hotels have now been ordered to close down and not take any bookings for the immediate time being. Guests already at the hotel or resort are allowed to stay and the resort can remain open in this case. No new guests are allowed to book in though.

Koh Samui has 7 officially confirmed Covid19 cases. It makes it the highest ranking amphur in the province of Surat Thani with confirmed cases.

The Songkran 2020 Festival has been officially cancelled and it's not considered a holiday this year.

The Seatran Discovery ferry has stopped all service between the islands for the time being. The ferries to the mainland are still running though, in a reduced schedule.
Flights to Bangkok can currently only be done with Nok Air from Surat Thani airport.

On to the weather. At 9,30am this morning it's 31C. Hardly any clouds in the sky and bound to heat up again, very soon.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 6^th April – 12^th April 2020

Tesco Lotus in Chaweng, early April 2020. The Covid10 crisis has most of the mall closed down. It gives for a strange sight and eerie feeling. Not many people around and with so many shops being closed down, it's very strange indeed. 

It has been splendid last week. Lots of sunshine. Very few clouds. No rain whatsoever. Maximum temperature reached 33C. It feels a lot warmer / hotter though. The heat actually beats you down. It seeps all your energy during the day time.

The minimum temperature last week dropped to 23C on Monday. The rest of the week it was more like 25C with a few times a drop to 24C.

Very typical April weather.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 6^th April – 12^th April 2020

Don't forget, that despite the current Covid19 crisis, Koh Samui still has it's natural beauty. Here's another glorious sunset in the making near Big Buddha last week. Not so many as usual, but people still hang out and enjoy the sunsets on the road to Big Buddha. This time of the year is perfect for enjoying a good sunset.

The forecast for next week looks interesting. A bit more cloud cover and from Monday onward, possibly a bit more rain. It's a partial rainy season after all. 

Looking forward seeing you back on Koh Samui soon. As soon as it;'s possible again and we can travel around again. Until that time, be safe!

Welcome to April 2020

April's Fool day and time to say welcome to April 2020. Just so you know, in Thailand it's illegal to make jokes about you being Covid19 positive.

Other than that, it is Covid19 making the headlines. Various conspiracy theories start popping up. The US blames China. China blames the US. What world did we end up in?

First things first though. The weather! April is typically the hottest month of the year. Although, during recent years we actually had a few showers during April. Can you imagine!

The big news this month, however, is that Songkran has been cancelled or postponed. No water throwing this year, no parades. It also means no iced water down my back, that's a good thing I guess!

In the meantime, travel restrictions are being tightened up. Different provinces may each have their own rules in place. 

Bangkok Airways will be grounding their fleet from 7 to 20 April. No more flights to/from Koh Samui. The logical next step will be to halt the ferries. Although, I don't think this is an option, since we need daily food supplies from the mainland.

Welcome to April 2020

Sunset as seen from our house, a few days ago. The weather has been great and that makes for some great sunsets. My camera isn't the best though and the view is from our house, so no dramatic orange sun explosions. However, the moon can be seen as a bright star. Despite Covid 19, nature is still as beautiful as it always is and was on Koh Samui.

Are there actually any tourists left on the island. In Koh Phangan? On Koh Tao? I doubt it very much, You must be able to count them almost on the fingers of one hand.

Most hotels are closed by now. Other hotels or resorts offer resident rates, to get locals to stay at their place.

Interesting times folks! If you have booked, don't cancel but postpone your trip. I hope the hotels/resorts and airline companies are easy going with restrictions on re-booking.

Be safe, keep your distance and wash your hands!

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 24^th February – 1^st March 2020

It's Sunday morning and time to look at the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 24th February – 1st March 2020. 

No long run this morning, I needed to simulate a 5k race. I did and I did well. My second fastest pace on this distance. Certainly that makes me happy.

On to the weather though. At 10.30am it's 28C and the temperature is rising. This all under a partially clouded sky. A nice first day of the new month is in the making.

Sunset, earlier this month near Big Buddha. This is taken on the road that connects Big Buddha to the main island. Every evening, when it's dry and a sunset is in the making, dozens of people meet here. They sit or stand next to the road. Lovers, photographers, families, all kind of people gather each time to enjoy a lovely sunset here.

Last week it was dry again. February 2020 ended on a good note. Maximum temperature reached 31C. The minimum temperature dropped to 22C a few times over night. A good week and what can be expected this time of the year.

For next week, the forecast looks good. The nice and cool breeze stays on. However, no rain is predicted! A lot of partially cloudy days are predicted though. This means that there should also be plenty of sunshine. Enjoy your stay and don't forget to go out and about. Explore the island! Experience all the good and nice things Koh Samui and it's surrounding islands have to offer.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 2^nd December – 8^th December 2019

Early Sunday morning and time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 2nd December – 8th December 2019. 

I'm sitting in Cebu City in the Philippines right now. However, I should be back on Koh Samui later tonight. A long travelling day ahead. A long slow Sunday morning run of two hours already behind me.

The sky over Koh Samui is overcast but it's dry in Plai Laem for the time being. At 7am it's 26C and some parts around the island may have rain.

In Cebu City it's partially cloudy and current time at 8am it's 26.2C. Soon I will be making my way to the airport. A long day of travelling lays ahead of me.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 2^nd December – 8^th December 2019

The restaurants on site at the Namuang waterfall. Well worth stopping for and checking out the menu. Barbecued chicken and som tam always goes down well. With some sticky rice and a fresh coconut. 

Last week it rained almost every day, except Friday and Saturday. Maximum temperatures still hit 32C in the beginning of the week. The lowest temperature during the night time reached 20C

Malapascua island in the Philippines. White beach. The most touristy part of the island. The Philippines are mostly catholic and you're reminded of that on a regular base, even on the beach.

The forecast for next week is windy until Monday. Rainy until Thursday morning. Good and mostly dry from Friday onward. Saturday the sun can make it's grande entrance again. Enjoy your time on the island. This rainy season was a very mild one compared to most other years that I am on the island.

Sunday afternoon, and time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 9th September – 15th September 2019.

It's a cloudy afternoon and at 1pm the current temperature is a cool 29C.

This morning I participated in the Samui Festival running event. The 5km race was on my schedule and I came in 21nd all over and 4th in my age group 50-59 years! Despite having a very fast 4'19 pace per km, I was a bit surprised that I didn't fare any better in the rankings. However, having said that, the first 3 in each age category for all distances, received price money. That surely brings out the freaks, so to speak. 

Next week at the Wharf, a charity run, will only see local Samui runners.

There was also a cycling event this morning, which caused a few traffic jams around the ring road! All in all, a great event, well organized and fun to participate in.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 9^th September – 15^th September 2019

Last week we had some hardcore flash floods Monday and Tuesday afternoon. All hell broke loose and the usual hot spots flooded in no time. Above you can see a picture Bang Rak on Tuesday afternoon. Each day, just after an hour or so, the water levels dropped again. No worries there. The next day was also nice, when all the mud turns into dust!

The rest fo the week was surprisingly nice. Partially cloudy to sunny.

Except for last night when it rained again. Yesterday may have seen a shower or two around the island as well.

Maximum temperatures reached 34C. The minimum got stuck at 22C

Yesterday morning, Saturday, saw the yearly Tha yai event in the temples around Samui. This is at Wat Plai Laem.

For next week we have a forecast of strong wind and tropical showers until Wednesday. Come Thursday it should clear up again nnd we should be able to welcome the sun again.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 12^th August – 18^th August 2019

Sunday morning once more and time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 12th August – 18th August 2019.

Against all odds, I did run the Lamai Charity fun run this morning. The fully monty or distance over 11.6km. I haven't run since two weeks, due to injuries and my time wasn't the best. Still felt good to race again though.

Today is partially cloudy with the sun breaking through most of the time. Nice and warm but not too warm or hot. Current temperature at 10am is 29C.

Last week saw a very nice week around Koh Samui. There was some relatively strong wind at times but nothing to get worries about. The rain kept mostly away from the Plai Laem area in the north eastern corner of the island where we live. Only Friday afternoon saw a short and strong shower. Maximum temperatures last week reached 35C, just one day though. The minimum temperature dropped one night to 22C.

A much better week than originally predicted.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 12^th August – 18^th August 2019

The music combo at the Tarnim Magic Buddha Garden. It's been 10 years since I visited here. It's high up on the mountains. Nicely cuddled in between big durian plantations. Especially this time of the year, you drive through the durians that literally hang over the roads sometimes. The Magic Garden is a place well worth visiting. We were lucky that we caught the garden between two big mountain car trip groups. It was quiet when we were there. You have to time it!

For next week you might as well get the sun lotion out. Hardly any wind, almost no rain. The prediction is looking very good. Hope you enjoy your time on the island. Go out and have a look what Samui has to offer!

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 5^th August – 11^th August 2019

Good morning and welcome to the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 5th August – 11th August 2019.

It's cloudy and the very strong wind of the last two days has passed. There's still strong wind but not storm like anymore. It's currently 30C at 10.30am and very occasionally the sun peaks through a cloud hole. 

Last week saw very strong winds around the Samui archipelago. Culminating on Friday and Saturday with almost storm like conditions. Friday afternoon and evening and Saturday morning saw some very strong wind. Earlier last week saw a few fast and furious storms pass through as well. Surprisingly, during all this time, there was not that much rain. A lot less than I expected.

Maximum temperatures reached 35C on Thursday. The minimum hit Thursday night as well with 21C.

Luckily we only had one time a power cut at our house. With this kind of weather it can easily happen that a tree or tree branch hits an electricity cable with all electrical consequences!

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 5^th August – 11^th August 2019

Plai Laem, just outside of our house, during one of the many storms last week. Dark skies, strong winds but surprisingly very little rain. You can see how the coconut tree leaves are going in one direction. Caused by the strong wind.

For next week the forecast predicts still a few days with strong wind. Specifically Thursday may rock the boat a little bit. Rain can be expected, but just like last week, not too much. Most likely short, tropical showers. Hard, short and fast.

Don't forget next weekend, on Sunday 18th August, the Lamai charity run. It's sold out by now.

Do enjoy your stay on the islands and be careful, it is box jelly fish season again. Sightings have been reported from Lamai and Maenam beaches.

Welcome to June 2019

Welcome to June 2019

The weekend has kicked off, it's Saturday morning and welcome to June 2019. The first day of this month is underway.

Moreover, it's a beautiful first of June. First of all we have blue skies. Secondly, the sun crunching is already crunching it out early in the morning. A warm overture to June is in the making.

It's almost 11am and the quicksilver is already hitting 32C.

In general June is a nice around Koh Samui and it's archipelago. There's a minor rainy season, but nothing to get too worried about. Expect tropical showers later this month but also plenty of sunshine.

The first June week of this year looks great. In other words, partially clouded to blue skies in the beginning of the week. This will be followed by stronger wind towards next weekend and an occasional tropical shower.

Welcome to June 2019

At the renaissance resort in Lamai. The part of their beach where they conduct weddings. A very scenic backdrop.

Moreover, this month will see plenty of running and racing action. Starting with the Bangkok Samui half marathon, 10km and 5km races tomorrow. Therefor we will visit Nathon later today to pick our BIB's (race numbers).

After that, there's Cancer Care fun and charity run come Saturday 15th June. On the same day, on Koh Pahngan, 'the Moonm' trail starts with distances ranging from 100km to 15km. I will be participating in the 15K race on Sunday 16th June.

Sunday morning in Phuket and time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 6th May 2019 – 12th May 2019. The long slow distance run is still to come, in the afternoon. After I finish teaching the current PADI IDC on Phuket.

It's nice and sunny early in the morning. It promises to be another hot day. It's relentless! 28C already at 7.30 in the early morning!

Phuket is looking very similar. 28C early in the morning with a slightly cloudy sky. 

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 6^th May 2019 – 12^th May 2019

Last week it was hot with hardly any rain on Koh Samui. Maximum temperatures ranged from 35C to 27C. It felt at times a lot warmer than the measured 35C. A nice start to this month of May.

The new roundabout at Chalong circle on Phuket is almost ready. Here you can see the brand new clock tower, still not completely finished. The tunnel under the roundabout is also almost completed. Hopefully it will give a much needed relief to the local traffic.

Next week is looking nice again. Maybe some rain tomorrow but the rest of the week should be dry. Partially cloudy and warm is predicted with more blue in the sky towards next weekend. Don't forget the sun lotion this week. Especially coral and ocean friendly sunscreen lotion!

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 29^th April 2019 – 5^th May 2019

It's Sunday, noon, a busy morning done and dusted and time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 29th April 2019 – 5th May 2019.

This morning we were in Don Sak. First of all we took the first ferry of the day. Secondly, once in Don Sak I ran my long slow distance Sunday morning run. It's just past noon and we're already on our way back on the Seatran ferry to Koh Samui.

It's around noon now and there is a hazy sky. Loads of blue but also some thin, white clouds in the sky. Did I mention it's hot? 31C on the clock but it feels like we're just about to hit 40C! Another hot day in the making.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 29^th April 2019 – 5^th May 2019

At the Angthong National Marine Park last week. The Blue Lagoon, a salt water lagoon. To have the top view, you will have to climb some steep stairs. Being originally from the Netherlands, I have seen some steep stairs in my life! The stairs at the Green lagoon are in a league of their own though. That was some serious 'steep'. It gives a new meaning the the word 'steep'. Great view though. For only ten times the entrance price compared to what a Thai national pays.

Yesterday saw some showers throughout the day with a real thunderstorm in the early evening. Rain, at last! The island needed a fresh showers or two.

Last week we saw maximum temperatures of 36C. Minimum temperatures hit 27C during the night time. It was another hot week.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 29^th April 2019 – 5^th May 2019

This morning my wife wanted to visit the market at Don Sak. Afterwards, we went to Suan Ta San. Here is a small river stream in which you can have your feet cleaned by fish. It's all natural, and the cleaning part is fun and very tickly. At times I had ten or more on my foot. There's a restaurant as well and we had a late breakfast, Isaan style. Entrance is a mere 20.-THB per person. Only 14km from the Seatran ferry.

Next week we may see some strong wind. Specifically Monday through Wednesday. Occasional tropical showers and/or thunderstorms can also be expected.
