Welcome to September 2020

Welcome to September 2020

It's the first day of this new month, hence we say welcome to September 2020.

The weather during this month can be a bit of hit and miss. Ideally it's nice and sunny. On the other hand, September tends to have quite a few rain days as well. The first week of this month is a perfect sample. Up to the weekend it should be partially cloudy with an occasional tropical shower. Over the weekend we might get a few heavier showers. The sun may come out after this first September weekend.

Due to Covid19, there are still no big or major events scheduled on Koh Samui. The international borders are to remain closed for the foreseeable future. It's time to win in the lottery in order to survive! The island is unrecognizably quiet!

Welcome to September 2020

Welcome to September 2020

The most famous mummified monk on the island. This monk resides in Wat Kunaram between Hua Thanon and Baan Namuang. The other mummified monk can be found in the Baan Taling Ngaam temple. This is a lot more off the beaten track. Both are interesting though and well worth checking out the history behind this mummification process. Which both monks voluntarily chose for back in their days. At the moment you pretty much have both temples for your own!

Where ever you are, stay safe. I'm looking forward seeing you again in Thailand and more specifically on Koh Samui!

Whilst you are here, do 'like' my Koh Samui blog Facebook page and enjoy the beaches around the island or in front of your hotel or resort and get some well deserved rest and a break. That is, once the travel restrictions have been lifted.

There are plenty Thais and foreigners, Westerners or farangs who have a hard time dealing with no income and bills to pay. Unfortunately I'm no exception to this rule. If you like this blog, this is a good time to help out and make a donation. If you can, it's much appreciated! There's a donation button on top of this page or ask me for other options.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 29th September – 6th October 2019

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 29th September – 6th October 2019

Sunday morning, time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 29th September – 6th October 2019.

Long run is in  the bag. I'm glad to be back in training again. Goal is the half marathon come 15th December in Surat Thani. Today was an easy hour and a half run. In the last 600 meters I run off my feet by a dog! The dog was running next to a motorbike, following his owner. He didn't see me and despite evading moves by myself, he hit me full on and swept my legs away. Lucky for me it was on the side of the road and I landed face first in the sand. Very lucky for me that I did not have a single scratch.

On to the weather though, it is partially cloudy this morning. The current temperature at 9.45am is 29C. It looks like a nice day in the making, not too hot but most likely dry.

Last week saw some great weather. All week long sunny skies and lots of sunshine. It was warm but not 'stupid' warm or rather hot as for instance in April. The overall temperatures are dropping and makes for agreeable days. As long as it stays dry. Dry it was this week. Wherever I was on the island last week, I didn't spot a single drop of rain.
Maximum temperatures reached 34C in the beginning of the week. The minimum temperature barely hit 23C. A nice start of the month indeed.

Khow Tanim or the Magic Garden in Baan Namuang. My last visit was almost two months ago. Check it out, it is an interesting place to visit. This is one of the many statue clusters that can be found there.

The forecast for next week is looking great. The weather of this week continues to hold on. Hardly any wind, few clouds and plenty of sunshine. The overall temperature shouldn't be too hot though. October continues to keep up good appearances.
Enjoy your time on our island or in the Samui archipelago next week!

Please do 'like' my Koh Samui blog Facebook page and enjoy the beaches around the island or in front of your hotel or resort and get some well deserved rest and a break.

If you're done resting or need something else to do, there's plenty of things on offer on and around Koh Samui, you can go snorkeling or diving or take a dive course.

Join me in a private dive trip with yours sincerely!

You can also enjoy some of the trips I recommend, like a half day gourmet lunch and snorkeling trip at the Southern part of Koh Samui or a photography trip where you get to see the most photo genetic spots on the island or go for a drinks tasting tour if you like a tipple or two.

You may also opt for a very special dinner experience at The Thai Experience. Behind closed doors, reservation only and a very enjoyable and well worthwhile way of spending an evening on Samui. Authentic Thai food and a great atmosphere. Can highly recommend this experience.

Welcome to September 2019

Welcome to September 2019

It's that time of the month again and we can say a well meant Welcome to September 2019. This month typically carries on the nice and good weather from August. A lot of times it's even better compared to August.
The first couple of days may be windy and with some rain. However, the first weekend of this brand new month looks just splendid. Hardly any clouds and plenty of sunshine.

Welcome to September 2019

Welcome to September 2019

One of the many different statues you can find at the Magic Garden. Towering high above the island, in the middle of durian plantations, you can find the Magic Garden. Turn into the road opposite Wat Khunaram and follow the road up the mountain. Signs will guide you to find the right way. Well worth a vist. First of all for the stunning views from above during the ascent. Secondly, to actually visit the Magic Garden itself.

This month will also two great running events. First of all the one on 15th September. This is part of the much bigger 'Samui Festival' This festival will rage over the island for a couple of days. With live music, a bicycle event, running events and much more.
Secondly come 22nd September the '6th Mad Hatter run'. Unfortunately both events are sold out.
Hope to see you there!

If you're on the island this month, a good choice! Enjoy the island, it's surrounding islands and hopefully good weather. Plus all we have to offer so you feel welcome here.

Please do 'like' my Koh Samui blog Facebook page and enjoy the beaches around the island or in front of your hotel or resort and get some well deserved rest and a break.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 12th August – 18th August 2019

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 12th August – 18th August 2019

Sunday morning once more and time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 12th August – 18th August 2019.
Against all odds, I did run the Lamai Charity fun run this morning. The fully monty or distance over 11.6km. I haven't run since two weeks, due to injuries and my time wasn't the best. Still felt good to race again though.

Today is partially cloudy with the sun breaking through most of the time. Nice and warm but not too warm or hot. Current temperature at 10am is 29C.

Last week saw a very nice week around Koh Samui. There was some relatively strong wind at times but nothing to get worries about. The rain kept mostly away from the Plai Laem area in the north eastern corner of the island where we live. Only Friday afternoon saw a short and strong shower. Maximum temperatures last week reached 35C, just one day though. The minimum temperature dropped one night to 22C.
A much better week than originally predicted.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 12th August – 18th August 2019

The music combo at the Tarnim Magic Buddha Garden. It's been 10 years since I visited here. It's high up on the mountains. Nicely cuddled in between big durian plantations. Especially this time of the year, you drive through the durians that literally hang over the roads sometimes. The Magic Garden is a place well worth visiting. We were lucky that we caught the garden between two big mountain car trip groups. It was quiet when we were there. You have to time it!

For next week you might as well get the sun lotion out. Hardly any wind, almost no rain. The prediction is looking very good. Hope you enjoy your time on the island. Go out and have a look what Samui has to offer!
There's always time to hang out at the beach! Stay safe and enjoy!

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 2nd February, 2017

Today's weather;

There's a very thin cloud layer early this morning over Koh Samui and it might stay slightly cloudy today. It seems that the sun is working very hard to dissolve the clouds, meaning that you my expect some sunshine today as well and it should stay dry today. Current temp at 7am is 23C

On Koh Lanta we have a similar partially cloudy sky and I expect it to be a nice and sunny day, but yesterday the day started out the same here but ended up being cloudy all day long. Current temp at 7am on Koh Lanta is 22C

The forecast for the next seven days remains very good and promising. After today all days should be very sunny with at worst a partially cloudy sky and at best just plain blue skies. Very nice weather ahead of us, time to book some tours to keep yourself busy or plan a relaxation day or days on the various beaches around the island. Enjoy it!

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 1st February, 2017

Today's weather;

It's fairly cloudy over Koh Samui this morning but the sun should start to dissolve the clouds fairly quickly, one it heats up. It should stay dry today and become sunny. Current temp at 7am is 25C

On Koh Lanta the current PADI IDC has already passed the halfway mark and later today we go out on the boat for some open water training dives. The sky is nice and blue and it looks like another warm and sunny day is in the making here. Current temp at 7am is 23C

Aerial picture of Hin Ta and Hin Yai in Lamai, or Grandmother (Yai) and Grandfather (Ta) rocks. The beautiful rock formation and look respectively like female and male genitalia.
“A folklore of Samui Island tells the story of an old couple by the name of Ta Kreng (Grandpa Kreng) and Yai Riem (Grandma Riem) who lived with their son in the southern province of Nakhon Si Thammarat. Since their son had come of age, they felt that it was time he got married. “One day they decided to sail to the neighbouring province of Prachuap Khiri Khan to ask for the hand of the daughter of a man named Ta Monglai. During their sea journey, their boat was seized by a storm. The old man and his wife were unable to swim ashore. They died at sea, turning into rocks as proof to the would-be bride's parents of their true intentions. The rocks stand there to this day.”

Yesterday saw a nice and sunny and sometimes partially cloudy day over Koh Samui with a max temp of 31C A great way to say goodbye to January 2017!

The forecast for the next seven day is still looking, possibly partially to fairly cloudy tomorrow and Friday but other than real nice blue skies should be hovering over Koh Samui for all other days. Enjoy, get a tan and don't forget the sun lotion!

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 23rd December, 2016

Today's weather;

It's raining and cloudy over Koh Samui this morning and there is some rain expected today until the lat afternoon going hand in hand with a slightly stronger wind. Current temp at 7am is 26C

At Haad Yao on Koh Phangan we have cloudy skies but it's dry and at the moment it doesn't look like rain, but you never know for later during the day, maybe a short shower will pass over. Current temp at 7am is 25C

Today is the last day pf PADI Specialty Instructor training and once more we go to Sail Rock, third day in a row.

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 23rd December, 2016

Big Buddha in-between some of the rainy days during the floods early on in December on the Koh Fan peninsula

We were most of the day at Sail Rock yesterday, diving and enjoying the massive schools of fish whilst there were rain showers going over Koh Samui and Koh Phangan during the early morning. The afternoon was sunny and bright though and it was a long time since we felt the sun heating up our skin again. Max temp reached 30C

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 23rd December, 2016

Wat Samai Kongka on Koh Phangan just past the Koh Phangan hospital, kind of on the middle road between Thong Sala and Srithanu where there are statues depicting some scene of purgatory, a version of Buddhist hell, of which I hope to post soon a new blog

The forecast remained fairly unchanged with mostly partially cloudy skies for the next seven days but be prepared to have some rain showers here and there, but also some sunshine. The monsoon season seems to be walking on it's last legs and hopefully we will have sunny days back soon.

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 16th December, 2016

Today's weather;

Most parts of Koh Samui are dry at the moment during this early morning but our North Eastern part of the island has rain. There shouldn't be too much rain today but it should remain mostly cloudy. Current temp at 7am is 26C

On Koh Phangan we have grey clouds all over the place, from dark to light grey and it just started to rain some ten minutes ago but it also seemed to have stopped again. Current temp is 25C at 7am and we don't expect any sunshine here but hopefully we don't have all day long rain either, like yesterday.

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 16th December, 2016

Hin Ta and Hin Yai in Lamai yesterday, with a very dark back ground, clouds in all kind of grey to almost black shades. There's was plenty of rain around Koh Samui yesterday but not all day long. The rain wasn't hard or torrential but a nice steady downpour to a drizzle at times.

Yesterday saw a lot of rain around Koh Samui, but not all day long (in contrast to Koh Phangan where we had all day long rain), but it wasn't torrential but rather steady and sometimes just a drizzle. Max temp reached only 27C

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 16th December, 2016

Outside of the classroom of the current December PADI IDC on Koh Phangan at Haad Chao Phao yesterday, with the rain having a ball. All day long we had rain, not hard but almost non stop all day long, As a result we had some minor floods on some parts of the road, but because the rain wasn't hard, the floods weren't too bad. We were in the swimming pool yesterday for almost two hours as part of the PADI IDC training and it was cold!

The forecast predicts a slight increase in wind over the weekend with all day long rain, again, not torrential but steady. Come Monday it should clear up and we may see some sunshine again. The monsoon is back, but this time in a lot more reasonable way and how you can expect a monsoon to be, without the excessive and torrential rain and all it brings with it.

Guang Yu Shrine in Hua Thanon

Guang Yu Shrine in Hua Thanon

Just before the weekend a new and reconstructed statue at Guang Yu Shrine in Hua Thanon has been officially opened with a ceremony.
It's the second change within a few years. In 2012 there was a ceremony for a complete new shrine and as the previous link shows, with a big red head in front of the shrine.

Guang Yu Shrine in Hua Thanon

Frontal view of the renewed statue at the Guang Yu Shrine in Hua Thanon

Well, this head has now been replaced with the new statue that is in the pictures in this post.
What I still dearly remember is the original old, wooden Guang Yu shrine, check out this post from June 2008. I was well impressed with the shrine and it surroundings and to be quite honest, I liked that old wooden shrine a lot more than the new one.

Guang Yu Shrine in Hua Thanon

A side view of the renewed statue at the Guang Yu Shrine in Hua Thanon

Having said that, the new statue is impressive and looks good, however, the atmosphere on the old shrine was unique and has not been caught in my humble opinion with the new concrete shrine complex. How impressive it may look like.
Guess it's called progress, as with plenty more things around the island.

Guang Yu Shrine in Hua Thanon

A rear view of the renewed statue at the Guang Yu Shrine in Hua Thanon

The previous big, red head was impressive in it's right, but admittedly, this new statue has something going for itself and it's all part of Koh Samui history with a strong Hainanese link to the shrine.
The Chinese island of Hainan is where the original inhabitants, or at least a lot or most of them, originate from.

Guang Yu Shrine in Hua Thanon

This can be found back at the original Hainanese style of most of the original wooden houses around Hua Thanon and the restaurant next to the Guang Yu Shrine in Hua Thanon, where you can find this restaurant,

Guang Yu Shrine in Hua Thanon

The actual shrine at the Guang Yu Shrine in Hua Thanon

It's well worth a stop, if you drive by or are doing a trip around the island, in that case it;s almost a mandatory stop. There's a very different feel and vibe at this shrine compared to a traditional Thai temple, of which you can find many around the island.

A new page has been created on this blog about tour bookings

Yes indeed, a new page has been created on this blog about tour bookings and I hope you visit this page a lot and book tour through this page. Visit the page by clicking here.

Many times I'm being asked what can we do on Koh Samui and hopefully this page will help you a little bit on finding the right tour activity for you on Koh Samui.

At the moment three tours have been selected and all three of them have been tested by me and all three passed this test. I work with reliable people that I know and offer quality tours.

There's a permanent link to this new page on top of each blog post, have a look and click on the link (the orange colored words).

A new page has been created on this blog about tour bookings

All three tours currently on offer insurance and cater to different activities. One nice feature is that they are half day trips, which leaves enough time to do other things that same day.

Currently on offer are an Island Gem Gourmet picnic tour which also includes snorkeling, a photographer's tour for scenic and some top locations on Koh Samui to catch some great shots and there's also a drink tasting tour which visits some special places on the island where you can try out local, home made drinks and/or brews.

Hope you enjoy the page and visit often. Please ask me if you have any questions or leave feedback!

Counterfeit 500.-THB notes in circulation on Koh Samui

There are currently various reports circulating about counterfeit 500.-THB notes in circulation on Koh Samui. Various banks on Koh Samui are aware of the situation and ask you to be vigilant when accepting payment or change.

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 7th August, 2015

Today's weather;

It's cloudy this morning over Koh Samui with some dark grey clouds at times but also with a few isolated blue spots. There may be some rain later today. Current temp at 7am is 25.7C

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 7th August, 2015

This location near Plai Laem is supposed to become a water park. Rumors have it that either a similar park is now under construction in Maenam. Interesting to see how this will work out

Yesterday saw a very cloudy morning and the 'hard, fast and furious' tropical shower had an appearance around 1.30pm. After that it cleared up a little bit and during the afternoon we even had some small bits of blue sky. Some boat trips were cancelled yesterday morning due to the expected strong winds. Max temp reached 30C

The forecast is easing up a little bit, over the weekend and this Monday we should still have strong winds, but after that we will see the wind on and off and come the weekend after that, the wind should have gone almost completely. Cloud cover is breaking up occasionally and I do expect sunny moments after this coming weekend but with still the occasional tropical shower being a possibility.

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 19th July, 2015

Today's weather;

There's a thin cloud layer hanging over Koh Samui this morning but there are also small blue pockets in the cloud layer. Later this morning I expect the sun to break through but during the afternoon we may get some rain. Current temp at 7am is 27C

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 19th July, 2015

The entrance are of Magic Garden on Khow Tanim. The small green building on the left is where you can buy the tickets, the bigger building in the background is a place where you can buy drinks. I can highly recommend a visit to the Magic Garden, including an awe inspiring climb to the top of the hill/mountain of Khow Tanim

Yesterday saw a cloudy start of the day but the sun broke through fairly early and we enjoyed some sunshine in a hazy sky. Around 4pm we had some showers around the island, varying in strength and amount of rain that came down at the various areas around Samui. Chaweng took a nice hit with some very dark clouds passing by. Max temp reached 22.9C

The forecast is predicting mostly cloudy skies for the next ten days but some days we may see some easing up on these clouds and I expect sunshine in various degrees and length of time on almost every day, with always the odd chance of a tropical shower,

Escapology in Lamai

Escapology in Lamai is an escape game which is located at the Beach Republic hotel in Lamai. We were invited last weekend and with a group of six we were locked up in a room, with the task to get out within 60 minutes. Easier said than done!

There are two games to choose from, the 'The Cuban Crisis', which we played and 'Shanghaied', a challenge we need to tackle and sort out soon!
With 'The Cuban Crisis' a team is tasked with the urgent quest for clues from Cold War Soviet intelligence; during 'Shanghaied', solving puzzles earns coveted freedom from the clutches of the evil pressgang. Each of the adventure games is set in a series of themed rooms, with detailed puzzles, riddles and clues.
You can play the game with 2 to 6 people and there's a minimum age of 7 years old.

The entrance

The games are a lot of fun and it was a lot more challenging than we expected. The staff is there to help in case you need it or request, but you are penalized with a time deduction in your game plan for each hint you receive. We needed two hints to get ourselves out of the rooms. Teamwork is of importance though and some clues are tricky but slowly and bit by bit hints and clues come together.

Our Escapology group

When clues start coming together, they will help you finding keys or lock combination numbers, only to find even more locks that need unlocking. Be warned though, some of the apparent clues may just be there for decoration use only, which can be misleading and add to the overall fun and confusion.

The locations is great and the staff was very nice and helpful, kudo's and thanks to them! The price is also good and it gives you an alternative to get away from the beach or 'another' shopping spree, let alone during a rainy day.
Visit their website fir more information about pricing and opening hours (from 10am with the last game starting at 7pm) and one great offer is a 50% discount when you have a Sunday brunch at the Beach Republic.

What are you waiting for, go on and join the fun and see if you can beat the record for getting out!
