Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 27th March, 2011

Today's weather;

Samui had a stormy night, all night long and right now there's lots of rain and it's about to continue until Tuesday when it starts easing up. Current temp at 7am is 24.4C

Yesterday saw plenty of rain all day long on Samui and this out of season rain is causing more and more flash flooding, well, if by now they still can be called flooding! There was 145mm of rain. Max temp reached 28.1C

Stranded car being pulled out of a flooded road near Donsak, see yesterday's blog post

Koh Lanta has a relatively nice sky, clouded but not grey and it looks like the sun is trying very hard to peek through. It's dry here for a change. Current temp at 7am is 24.6C

Yesterday saw lots of rain on Koh Lanta, upon arriving there was a drizzle but it changed sometimes to very hard rain combined with strong wind which lasted pretty much all night long. Max temp reached 29.9C with just 17mm of rain.

The forecast on Lanta looks a lot better compared to Samui, with a lot less rain and hopefully sunshine again for the next week(s). Oh yeah, did I mention that I'm starting another IDC today!

Hi Staale,

It's raining pretty much in all of Southern Thailand. The whole region is dealing with very unusual and out of season weather patterns.

By Thursday the weather should turn around on Samui and become better, that's the current prediction.

Hope this helps for now!

Thank you for including the weather in Samui. I will be there for Thai New Year and I'm hoping for clear sunny skies by then. Is this rainy weather usual for Koh Samui?

Hi Sazzette,

Come Songkran , the weather should be fine again, please check my archives which go back 4 years, half way down the page on the left hand. It's very unusual this kind of rain this time of the year and Songkran is usually very hot and dry!

Hello Camille,
I found an info on actual stormy weather on Koh Samui on your blogg. I am living in the Czech Republic and my mother is currently on the island. She is really scared because of storm and floods, staying in a hotel very close to sea. We have no experience with this kind of weather and I cannot find many information related to that on internet. Could you pls let me know if the situation on Koh Samui is dangerous or if it is more less common? What is your experience with the storming like that? Could the waves be so big to flood hotels on the beach?
Thanks in advance for the info, any response will be appreciated.
B. regards,
Andrea

Hi Andrea,

Although the weather may be impressive, it should not be dangerous, as long as your mother doesn't leave the premises of the hotel. There's not really a risk that the hotel will be flooded. Although it's unusual for this time of the year to have such storms, we do have them during our rainy season.

In my opinion your Mother should be fine but should stay in the hotel, by Thursday the situation should have improved.

Hope this helps for now.

Hi Camille,
thanks a lot for your prompt response. I hope that the weather will improve soon, I wish you and all the habitans of the island good luck. I hope that my mum will also be fine.
The photos on your blogg show that the floods are really tremendous. I am really deeply sorry.
