Today's weather;
Samui is fine at this very moment, no rain and wind, a lull in the beating it's getting. Yesterday was a different story, more on that later. Current temp at 7am is 25.3C.
Today and tomorrow look nice, which works out fine since I'm planning to travel back to Samui tomorrow. The 16th November I'm leaving again to Kao Lak for another IDC there.
Koh Lanta is also doing fine, especially compared to Samui! It's dry but cloudy with a current temp at 7am of 24.8C, not sure if it will stay dry today. Tomorrow is looking really bad around here with strong wind and lots of rain but nice the rest of the week.
Nest to where I stay at Klong Nin, just about 400 meters away the Koh Lanta Metereological Station is based
Yesterday saw Samui flooded again, see my earlier post today with pictures and a video from around Lamai. A whooping 285mm of rain came down during the day! Max temp reached 26.7C
Koh Lanta started out promising yesterday with some occasional sunshine at times but towards noon darker clouds came in and it was drizzle and rain from there onwards pretty much all day with a drier evening. Max temp reached around 28C.

I've been reading your blog with lots of interest as I am travelling to

I am planning to arrive in Koh Lanta on December 6th and I was wondering if
you think the weather will have improved by then?
I have a week in Koh Lanta and then a week at Railay, do you think the

Some friends said I should go to the east of thailand instead, e.g Koh

Thanks for you enquiry and for checking my blog.
Koh Lanta should have absolutely fab weather and diving conditions come early December! Even now it's a lot better off than Samui, it's Samui that has the monsoon season full on, not Koh Lanta!
I don't see any reason why you should cancel any hotels or change your plans. Although I live on Samui and would love to welcome you there, I think that you're better off on Koh Lanta come early December.

Is the weather that's affecting Koh Lanta normal for this time of year or is this freak weather?

Fair enough that people give out the wrong advice, good to have somebody on the ground here ;-) What I described before is the norm, this year seems to be really off so please don’t come knocking on my door if the for once the prediction doesn’t work out. I would be really surprised though!
The weather ruling Koh Lanta right now is rather unusual and only every so many years November is as wet as it is this year.

Hi Rick,
Right now it looks like it will ease up by than but the forecasts have projected this already a few times and unfortunately the rain continued.
It's a little bit difficult to predict at the moment, but the whole island hopes it will have stopped by that time.

Hi Justin,
Although I think that by the time you mention the situation will be back to 'normal', Samui may still have more rain than Phuket during that time of the year. Maybe it's a good idea to reschedule for Phuket or Koh Lanta.

Hi Lynn,
Right now I would expect the boats to run, there's almost no wind. The boats are less likely to run with strong wind rather than being influenced by the amount of rain coming down.

Im planning to arrive in Koh Samui on the 19th of November (next friday) and planning to head to koh phangan on the 21st for the full moon party. Do you think that the full moon party would be cancelled due to the weather conditions?
Is the transport from koh samui to koh phangan still running, despite the bad weather conditions? Is koh phangan whether much different to koh samui?
Sorry for all the questions, its my first time in thailand and the flooding is really worrying!!

Right now there's no reason to cancel the FMP (Full Moon Party), I traveled from Donsak to Samui by big ferry and not a single wave, the ocean was flat and no rain pretty much all day.
It will be good to keep an eye out for the forecasts but things should quiet down.
