Bangkok Air cancels all flights to/from Samui today

It ain't getting better!

Word on Thai Visa has it that Bangkok Airways just cancelled all flights to/from Samui and come to think of it, haven't heard planes all day yet (we live not too far from the airport). Here's a good link to a website that lists arrival times for Samui bound Bangkok Airways flights.

This picture is taken from the road leading out of Big Buddha, towards the main road. The grey spots in the middle are fishing boats taking shelter in Bang Rak bay. If the fishing boats come in, it means that it's spooky out on the ocean.

A picture of the actual Big Buddha area, normally one can see the rocks on the bottom of the water here, now speedboats can float around easily!

The school yard of the Wat Plai Laem school, now surprise school's out today. Our daughter is not going to school neither today and most likely tomorrow as well she'll be staying home.

A look on the roads from the inside of my car, water is literally everywhere and alongside the roads, many roadsides have been swept away, which makes for rather unhealthy drop offs for cars and bikes.

Did I mention yet that the wooden doors swell up and can't be locked and that inside the houses, everything starts to smell mouldy, let alone the toilet containers that are over flooded and can't take in any more toilet water. The joys of living in the tropics on a 'developed' island ;-)

hello camille,

just found your blog while looking for next days weatherforecast in ko samui. i'm mailing from hamburg, germany, my husband and a friend just got stucked at the airport. as we have found out by now , the rain comes at this time every year (which a stupid cousin who lives as well on koh samui hasn't told us). as you live on the island for a quite a while now, what would you tell somebody to do now? is the ferry working or should they just wait at the airport?
greetings from the small little harbourcity on river elbe
to lovely rainy koh samui,

Hallo Majken,

Thanks for your mail. Been to Hamburg a few times when I still lived in HH,
beautiful city. Are you German or Scandinavian, by the way?

To your question, right now it's dry and I would assume that Bangkok Airways
at some stage may resume flights again, later today (it sounded just right
now like planes taking off/departing).

To the best of my knowledge, the
ferries are still operating, so a quick dash to Surat Thani and flying from
there to Bangkok may be an option. Try the link I put on my latest blog
entry, it has departure/arrival times and delays listed for Samui airport.

Hallo Camille,

so that is what I call a fast response :-) Yes, I'm danish, but raised in Hamburg. My father comes from the island Als in the Baltic Sea,near the german border.

And yes, you're right there has just been a landing and everybody applauded, so I guess all the foreigners are longing to get back home now. Let‘s see I just told them to wait for a flight to Bangkok.

Hi Majken,

Glad to be at your service.

Fast indeed, since at the moment, I'm pretty much glued to the laptop, not much else to do..................

Crazy stuff! Take it easy man. I'm glad I'm out there on a rickety bike with bald tyres!

Hi Dave,

It's mad out there indeed!

Rain stopped now for about two hours and roads are improving fairly quickly in the neighbourhood. Flights are taking off now again as well.
