Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 4th November, 2010

Today's weather;

Samui's situation should start to ease up as of today. Almost all night there was electricity and although currently it's still raining and the roads at lower parts of the island are still flooded, the rain and wind should slow down essentially in the course of the day and I would expect water on the flooded roads to recede accordingly.
One of the problems that occurs each year with rains like this will be the run off water from the hills which may continue for days after the rain has stopped. Current temp at 7am is 24.7C

Yesterday saw Big C, Tesco Nathon and a few others open their doors again, the difficulty was in getting there! Many 7-11's were closed though, especially during power outages.
The amount of rain that came down yesterday was a bout a third compared to the previous day, 'only' 107mm.
Another blog where you can see loads of water and rain pictures is Elina's Samui blog.
The airport opened again yesterday at 3pm and the the forecast would allow the ferries to pick up their services very soon as well. Max temp reached 27.2C

It's been difficult being away from Samui during these times but I'm glad that I can have very regular contact with my wife and children and also with many other people on Samui and even Koh Tao.

The real problem areas in Southern Thailand are around Hat Yai and my thoughts go out to the people that are affected by all this water and the flooding there.

It's been amazing how many visits my blog had, just over 1.000, two days in a row with well over 4.600 page views and loads of enquiries and comments. If you're happy with my blog and updates and the information you receive, feel free to leave some beer tokens! Thanks to all who visited and left messages, keep coming back when Samui starts to turn to 'normal' again.

Airport road, with thanks to Richard ten Brinke

Getting back to my situation on Koh Lanta which is in total contrast to Samui! My IDC is coming along nicely and weather conditions are just fine here. Although a lot of rain is predicted for today, there are plenty of blue spots in a partly overcast sky. Current temp at 7am is 26C

Yesterdays sunset at Klong Nin on Koh Lanta

Yesterday morning started out with rain until about noon when it cleared up and the remainder of the day was sunny and agreeably warm and people came out to hang out on the beaches. Max temp reached 31.2C

Hi Camille,

Thank you for keeping us posted on the weather in Samui. Good job on the blog. Im Michelle and I have tickets booked to arrive in Samui this Saturday.

Do you reckon there's any point going ahead with the trip? I have already booked accomodation which is non refundable which would be a pain to loose the money but if it means having to wade through water the whole trip, it might be worthwhile forgoing it. What do you think? Any input would be appreciated.

Many thanks,
Michelle

Wondering what is the situation in Samui, if the road open to public now, bcoz me and my bikers would like to go there tomorrow on the 5th November.

Hi,

All temperatures are listed in my blog, please read todays entry again.

How are you planning to arrive on Samui?

Camille said...

Thanks Ilya,

The teller went crazy ;-) and keeps ticking over.

Hi Fern,

By Saturday I expect things to be back to normal, providing a new depression over Vietnam and Cambodia keeps a low profile.

Hi Camille

We are flying from Singapore to Koh Samui tomorrow.

Are city area flooded? We will be staying at Chaweng Beach.

Really appreciate this blog updates.
Cheers, Abby

Hi Abby,

Right now things look really good over the weekend.

I hope and expect that you should be fine. Just keep an eye out on a new depression forming over Vietnam and Cambodia.

Hi Muzz,

Guess for bikes it might be just a day or two too early to drive safely around Samui.

On certain places the water will still cover the road and there will be structural damage done to the road surface in certain places, making it relatively safe for a car but potentially dangerous for a bike.

Thanks for the info about Samui. I daily follow your block from Germany as we are parttimers on Samui and of course, in situations like now, we are happy to get pictures and infos about the situation. You do a fantastic job Camille. Thanks again. best regards from stormy Germany

Hi Marion,

Glad to be able to help here. Better wait a bit before coming back to Samui. Hope that all will be back to normal fairly soon.

Keep checking in!

Hi Camille,

just as many others I'm one of the soon-to-be-tourists that booked a holiday on Koh Samui. We were really
looking forward, to it - as it's the only holiday this year - and are now really distressed to see all those flood pictures.
Of course the most important thing is that everyone is okay physically and I'm glad to hear that you and your
family are doing fine.
Do you have an idea how long it will take that everything on the island turns back to normal? I'm just thinking
about all the houses and hotels that are flooded and must be untenantable fo quite a while?
And what about the nature itself...how long does it take to recover? We really wanted to do some diving and snorkeling when
we arrive in early december and I wonder If the sea will still be in that rough condition.

Thanks again for your blog and I really apreciate all this precious information

All the best for you

Denise

Hi Denise,

It's totally understandable that you're worried about your holiday, I can sympathize with that!
Right now it is indeed important to know that all and everybody is fine on the island, there are areas that are much worse hit than Samui!

By the time that you visit Samui, early December, i do expect that the vast majority of Samui is back to whatever we call normal and maybe there will be hardly much physical evidence left to see.
Do expect occasional rain but nothing like the last few days.

Diving can be a bit of a ht and miss than but I expect service will
be available again by then.

Please visit on a regular base and stay updated.

Hope this helps for right now.

Wow! You’re having a rough time of it.
We’ve had no rain here in Isaan for several days now – and we’re hoping that it stays like this. But it is uncomfortably cool and rather windy.

All the best, Boonie

Camille said...

Hi Boonie,

Thanks for checking in.

Strangely enough I'm on Koh Lanta where it was very sunny today! I was in the water all morning and my face got burned!

Samui is a different story all together! Miss the family!

Hi Camille,

Coming all the way from Canada we are scheduled to be Koh Samui Nov 13-20th(Honeymoon) - We've already booked our flight & hotel accommodations awhile back - We really want to go to Koh Samui and experience what the island has to offer but a bit worried.... Please advise as to what we should do - we would be coming from krabi - look forward to hearing from you! Keep up the awesome job with the your blog!!

Thanks,
Joel

Hi Joel,

By the 13th I hope that things on Samui have been back to normal. The weather right now is very unusual. It still will be monsoon by the 13th with occasional rain but not like Samui experienced the last couple of days.

Hi Camille,

Since I have a honeymoon plan in Samui during Nov 7~13.
But I'm so worry about serious flood, could you please advise the actual weather? Thanks a lot!

Camille said...

Between the 7th and 13th might be bit rough ans sometimes a bit of rain but it should not be like it has been the last couple of days.

Hi Camille!

I emailed you a few weeks a go regarding the weather in Koh Samui at the end of November. I've been following your twitter posts and can see that ALOT of rain has fallen in the last few days!! Do you think this is a good
thing or bad thing considering we're coming to Koh Samui 22nd November?
Hoping (as you said) that the more rain that falls now the less will fall later! Do you have maybe a longer forecast, can't seem to find one online...

Thank you for your help and your blog and keep up the good work :-)

Take Care,

Talia xxx

Hi Talia,

Up till now, when we had a batch of rain and weather just as it was over the last couple of days, and that was very unusual, that should be it. One bad patch of weather and the rest of the monsoon time would be more 'standard' monsoon, possibly rain during the day but not all day long and occasionally some sunshine.

Nothing like Samui just experienced. I don't know of any forecasts so far ahead of time, unfortunately.

Hope this helps for now.

Hi Luca,

If the weather allows the boats of going out, you will be able to dive. Visibility may not be the best right now though.
