Goodbye to May 2013

The month of May, version 2013 is standing on it's last legs and it's time to wave goodbye.

It was a good month for the weather and the sun lovers. I found it a lot hotter than the average May on Koh Samui with many days hitting around 35C during the second part of the month.
There was plenty of sunshine and just a little bit of rain during this month but there was also plenty of cloud cover at times. Nonetheless, an excellent May I would like to conclude.

Four Seasons reception area view

View towards Nathon from the Four Seasons reception area

In the beginning of the month I was still in Indonesia, first on Gili Air for the very successful PADI IE there and a few days later in Bali for an Instructor development update.
After that I had more work lined up, this time around for a PADI IDC on Koh Samui with another successful PADI IE also on Koh Samui.

So much for work though, May turned out to be a very good for restaurant visits around the island,  at Juzza Pizza in Fisherman's Village, Orgasmic in Bophud and Angela's Diner in Maenam we had a closer look at their respective menu's and all of them are still listed in our fave lists! Good times and good company were shared!

It was good to spend some time again on the island and with my family, now it's time to look forward to next month, which will kick off very early tomorrow with the Cancer Care Charity Fun Run in Nathon!

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 31st May, 2013

Today's weather;

It's rather cloudy this morning around Koh Samui and the cloud cover looks to thick for the sun to burn it up quickly. Current temp at 7am is 27.7C

Tomorrow morning is the Cancer Care Charity Fun Run in Nathon, sign up at 6am and start of all categoreis 10km, 5km and 2km fun run at 7am, hope to see you all there!

New water main pipes on Koh Samui

New water main pipes are being put in place since a few weeks in our hood, yesterday they were in front of our house

Yesterday started out very nice with a blue sky in the morning but before lunch a thin cloud layer moved which made for a hazy kind of day since the sun couldn't really penetrate the cloud layer, but tried very hard nonetheless. Max temp reached 33.2C

The forecast shows a nice breeze over the weekend, which should cool things down a bit and there's the odd chance of a tropical shower. After the weekend it should be warm but possibily rather cloudy.

Angela's Diner, Maenam

Formerly known as Angela's bakery, as posts from 2007 and 2009 can attest for, it's now renamed as Angela's Diner. A fitting name since it has indeed the feel of an American style diner.
The good news is that only the name has changed.

Angela's Diner, Maenam

Angela's diner, new look and name

The menu hasn't changed and all my favorites are still available, the meat loaf, the club sandwiches, the hot bandana, the chicken has and last but not least, all the baked gods for desert! It's still all there and with the same level of deliciousness!

Angela's Diner, Maenam, Angela's club sandwich

Angela's club sandwich, good as always!

The home baked bread is also still available and well worth a stop in case you pass by. In case you haven't visited there yet, the diner is located in Maenam, almost opposite from the new power station, about 100 or 200 before it if coming from Nathon, at the other side of the road.

Angela's Diner, Maenam, Cesar salad

A classy Cesar salad

They open early, 8 or 9am but close at 4pm, something not to forget! They opened already a few years ago, in December 1999, just one month after I arrived on the island and Angela and her husband are already for 17 years on Samui.
The first month on Samui I lived near the Maenam school but then I moved and lived for almost 3 years in the soi behind Angela's and that's about how long I've already been visiting one of my favorite lunch locations on the island.

Angela's Diner, Maenam, apple pie

Apple pie

For breakfast and lunch, this is one of the best places to be on the island, according to my taste buds! Try out the nice and extensive menu and don't forget to check out the baked goods! It's well worth the visit!

Orgasmic Restaurant, Bophud

It's been a good two years since I wrote about a visit Orgasmic Beach Restaurant in Bophud and we did visit in-between but I didn't write about those visits. The absolutely mouth watering 'poppy seed crusted lamb loin' has long since been off the menu but it's still well worthwhile visiting here.

A cold starter; Baby squid with a pesto based sauce

Last week we did visit again and now it's time to do a write up again. The atmosphere and ambiance at the restaurant are still 'up there'! The ocean side location with fantastic view over the Bophud bay and Koh Phangan are just part of the whole set up.

Chicken filet with North African herbs and wild mushrooms

The food is also still very good. Wally, the owner/chef welcomed us at the bar and did check on us again during the meal, a nice little touch but back to the food. We had various starters going and the pictured squid dish did go down very well.

Prawns in tamarind sauce

The mains were also very well and very tasty and yummy indeed! The chicken filet had a very subtle Maroccan taste to it and we had two dishes with tamarind sauce, prawns and duck breast, both also very good.

My fave desert; Sabayon with 'perfumed' ice

For desert I chose the sabayon and it was really good, it came with jasmin flavored ice cream, a great combination. We didn't drink any wine, so the bill was within reason but be ready for a big bite into your wallet. I, for one, can't eat here every week but it was well worth it!

Excellent dining, a cut above the rest and a great ambiance. Well worth a visit for a special occasion or if you want to impress your partner or I'm sure you can find some excuse.

Reservations can be made on 086 276 9101 and be aware, they are closed on Tuesdays.

A reference to the 'good old days' at Best Beach's beach bar, when the mushrooms and joints were flying 8 miles high on Chaweng beach

Yesterday saw a sunny day, almost all day long except for the late afternoon when clouds showed up. Where we live we had nothing but an extended period of drizzle but other parts of the island may have been more lucky with some good amounts of rain. Max temp reached 34.7C

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 26th May, 2013

Today's weather;

It's a bit of a mixed bag this morning. Partly cloudy and partly sunny. Current temp at 7am is 26C

We should have been in Hat Yai this morning, where I was registered to run a 13km race, but due to a Achilles tendon injury I had to cancel. Now I hope to be ready for this coming Saturday when the Cancer Care Charity Fun Run will be held in Nathon, 1st June with a 6am registration and 7am start.
Hope to see as many people as possible there.

5 kittens at our house

Two days ago 5 kittens were born at our house, during Visakha Bucha Day, Mum was born last year during Songkran, the Thai New Year, all very lucky according to my wife

Yesterday started out nice with a lovely blue sky before noon but clouds moved in slowly and during the afternoon we even had a little bit of rain. During the evening it all cleared up again and the moon and plenty of stars could be enjoyed. Max temp reached 33.4C

The forecast for the next 7 days predicts some stronger wind until Wednesday with all days fairly cloudy and possibly a nice, cooling tropical shower.

Cancer Care Charity Fun Run, Nathon, 1st June

Cancer Care Charity Fun Run

In a weeks time from today, it will already be all over, this years version of the Cancer Care Charity Fun Run.
Since we're getting really close to the event, it's time to post a reminder about this Charity Fun Run, which by now is held for the 6th time on Koh Samui, organized by the Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui.

Since 1981, Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts worldwide, led by the founder and chairman, Mr. Isadore Sharp, has been holding an annual charity event for cancer research and the company has raised more than 400 million USD in total, until now. In Thailand these runs have been organized since 17 years and so far raised around 33 million Thai Baht, all of which were retained for cancer research use in Thailand.

These Cancer Care events are all inspired and started by The Terry Fox run, the original Marathon of Hope in Canada in 1980.

This years event will be at the Nathon pier and registration is at 6am, race start time will be at 7am. Registration packages with either a t-shirt for 250.-THB or a polo shirt for 400.-THB can be picked up at the reception of the Four Seasons if you don't want to wait until Saturday.
The distance you can participate in is a 2.5 and 10km walk or run and the overall winner will be awarded 'Her Majesty the Queen's Cup'.
Tickets include a breakfast box and in addition, a lucky draw will be held for all participants who complete the event but you must be present during the draw!

You don't need to be an athlete to join this event, just show up and walk or run either distance that you fancy.
Although I'm injured at the moment, due to an Achilles tendon problem, which caused me to cancel a 13km tomorrow in Hat Yai, I hope to be ready to run this coming Saturday my third successive Cancer Care run in Nathon.

Please help the cancer care in Thailand an show and buy a ticket and enjoy the race and the atmosphere! Maybe you get lucky and win one of the fab prices in the lucky draw!

Best Beach on Chaweng beach

Best Beach, the last resort with fan rooms and possibly the last family run, old style resort on Chaweng Beach

Yesterday was another very hot day with plenty of sunshine in a cloudy sky, however, around 4pm it started to rain and held on for a long while, long enough so we didn't participate in the 'Wien Tien' of Visakha Bucha Day yesterday in the temple. It was long needed rain though and it was nice and cool outside during the evening. Max temp reached 34.2C

The forecast shows strong wind during the evening today, followed by a couple of days with hopefully a nice breeze and come next weekend, just before the Four Season's Care for Cancer run in Nathon, it should be all nice and dandy again!

Visakha Bucha Day

Visakha Bucha Day

Today's it's Visakha Bucha Day (วิสาขบูชา) again, this is one of the most important days in Buddhism because of three important incidents in the life of The Buddha on the same day, the Vesak full moon day. So each year, Buddhists throughout the world gather together to perform the worship to recollect the wisdom, purity and compassion of the Buddha.

Devout Buddhists will rise early and go to the Wat to make merit and listen to sermons on the Buddha’s teachings. In some temples Buddhists will perform “Wien Tien” in the evening, circling the bodh, or main hall, carrying candles, incense and lotus flowers. I will try to get some pictures of the 'Wien Tien' event at Wat Plai Laem tonight.

Birth of Buddha at Lumbini Park, India or nowadays Nepal

Birth of Buddha at Lumbini Park, India or nowadays Nepal

The three significant separate events that are celebrated today are;

1- Buddha's Birth;

The Buddha was a king by birth, in Sakya Kingdom, eighty years before the Buddhist Era, at Lumbini Park (in an area of Nothern India know today as Nepal), on Friday, the Vesak full moon day. He was named Siddhattha five days after his birth.

The Dharma Wheel

2- The Enlightenment of Buddha;

At the age of 35, he attained enlightenment while sitting under the Bodhi Uruvelasenanigama subdistrict (nowadays, located in the area of Buddha Kaya, Bihar State, India), on Wednesday, the Vesak Full moon day, forty five years before the Buddhist Era.
The Dharma discovered by the Buddha was Ariyasacca or the Four Noble Truths, namely:
1.    The Noble Truth of Suffering
2.    The Noble Truth of the Origin of Suffering
3.    The Noble Truth of the Extinction of Suffering
4.    The Noble Truth of the Path leading to the Extinction of Suffering

3- The Nibbana;

The Buddha passed away on Tuesday, the Vesak full moon day, under the two Sala trees in the Sala Grove of the Mallas in Kusinara, capital of the Malla State, (nowadays located in Kusinagara of Uttrarapradesa, India) at the age of eighty.

Blue Paradise Fest, Chaweng Lake, the event

Yesterday around 6pm we arrived at the Blue Paradise Fest at Chaweng Lake with the family to enjoy a couple of hours of entertainment, sponsored by Bangkok Airways to celebrate the 24th anniversary of Samui Airport.

Blue Paradise Fest, Chaweng Lake, entrance

The entrance

It was very well organized and there were only two entrance areas with good security checks. So early on it wasn't too busy but there were already enough people out and about. By the time we left  somewhere after 8pm there were still plenty of people going towards the lake.

Blue Paradise Fest, Chaweng Lake, food

There was also plenty of food, among others from members of the THA (Thai Hotel Association)

We first checked out the children's playground or Fun Park which had a few attractions like a wheel, a bungee and a fun castle for kids. Shortly after that we went to check out the food selection since we all were hungry!

Blue Paradise Fest, Chaweng Lake, stage

View towards the stage

The entrance was fee and a nice line up of Thai 'Superstars' were scheduled to perform. We saw Catherine English and the second act whose name I don't know, the shows went on until 1am and included Mario Maurer, who is world famous in Thailand!

Blue Paradise Fest, Chaweng Lake, fun park

Entrance to the fun park

During our first visit to the Fun Park there weren't many queues but shortly before we went home there were queues in front of all attractions. In general it was a lot busier by then.

Blue Paradise Fest, Chaweng Lake, wheel

The wheel at the Fun Park

Blue Paradise Fest, Chaweng Lake, bungee

Some bungee variation which seemed to be very popular with young and old

Blue Paradise Fest, Chaweng Lake, beer?

Fancy a beer anyone?

It seemed like everybody had a good time and it was nicely busy, at least 5.000 people showed up I would imagine. Now if Bangkok Airways would spend this kind of money on the 4th edition of the Samui Marathon, I would be very happy but unfortunately this event has been skipped from their agenda.

Recently our family finds it's way more often than not to Juzza Pizza (that's a link to a blog post of 4 years ago) in Fisherman's Village. The food is great , the view is stunning from the terrace and the breathtaking sunsets don't hurt either! It's affordable as well.

The outside terrace, well worth making a reservation here

It's our favorite Italian restaurant by choice and we visit about once a month at least at the moment.  If I remember correctly before my last trip to Indonesia, my last meal on the island was here and upon returning the first meal was here again!

The interior hasn't changed a lot since 2009!

Interesting is that they had the first incarnation of this restaurant in Chaweng's Soi Green Mango, until around 2000 or 2001, where now Henry's Africa is located. A location that turned out to be a good choice to impress the girl that now is my wife!

Tomato soup with garlic, sage with dash of parsley

They have some heavenly starters, this tomato soup with sage is one of them, but the Sauteed Mushroom with Butter and Garlic also do the trick for me.

Barracuda Fish Steak Caper
Sauteed and topped with caper sauce, served with buttered spaghetti

My wife who's pregnant ordered the above dish and than decided that the taste and smell of capers didn't go down well with her overactive taste and smell buds, allowing me to clean up this dish. Lucky me, I thought it delicious.

Our son's pizza, a good size and super crusty bottoms, just as we like it

Twelve different pizza's are on the menu plus another 10 vegetarian pizza options are offered, plenty to choose from.

 Home made...Gnocchi...!!!
Creamy blue cheese sauce (pictured above), Fresh basil tomato sauce or Parmesan cream sauce

The gnocchi's were delicious, 'nuff said! This was my choice of the day.

Last but not least, my all time fave here; Spinach Cream
Spinach and a dash of garlic, in creamy sauce with Parmesan with the choice of spaghetti, fettuccine or penne

Our daughter went for my all fave dish, the Spinach cream pasta, hence I took the gnocchi's! This dish is awesome, in my book and 9 out of 10 times this is what I order.

Juzza Pizza is well worth a visit and a reservation for a table on the terrace with a view over the bay and Koh Phangan is recommended at 077 245662-3, keep in mind that the restaurant is closed on Mondays.
The restaurant can be found if you come from the traffic lights, go all the way down to the pier and take a right, after about 300 meters it's at your left hand.

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 12th May, 2013

Today's weather;

It's very grey and cloudy this morning around Koh Samui, I can only hope the cloud cover breaks and the sun will peak through. Current temp at 7am is 28C

Don't forget to check out the Free Festival on 17th May at the Chaweng Lake to celebrate 24 years of Samui airport.

Bophud beach, Bandara, Koh Samui

Bophud beach at the Bandara

Yesterday was a fairly cloudy day and the sun came occasionally through and it stayed dry. Max temp reached 31.8C

The forecast shows a strange phenomena today, around mid week the cloud cover should become less but the chance of tropical showers increases. Let's see and wait how that pans out!

Big C, Koh Samui

Almost 5 years old this sign at Big C and it's still there! More funny pictures about Thailand can be found in my Facebook group TIT (This is Thailand)

Yesterday saw a fairly cloudy but the sun kept popping out on occasion and it was still warm and dry. Max temp reached 32C

The forecast still shows the cloudy skies with an occasional tropical shower but there should also be enough sunny patches during the day.
