Despite the recent bombing, it as time for Songkran 2015 on Koh Samui. It was good to be back on the island again for this big Thai festival, celebrating Thai New Year.
Busy Chaweng beach road
Early morning a family friend with her family came to our house and soon we were off to Chaweng to start to celebrate. As on cue, the first rain in about 10 weeks came down pretty soon after we arrived in Chaweng and at times it came down pretty hard. Nobody seemed to care though since everyone and everything was wet anyway.
Dancing in the street
We arrived at around 10am in Chaweng and left around 4pm, after almost non stop water fighting for 6 hours. When we left, the battle was going on full throttle and it seemed like it is going to be a long night in Chaweng and other places on the island.
A convenient way to get around during Songkran
Many Western and Asian tourists were enjoying the festivities, along with tons of Thais, celebrating their New Year.
Did I say skimpy?
Due to the rain, lots of people in their skimpy clothing could be seen clattering their teeth although nobody gave in and all partied on. Since ice water was forbidden this year, along with spicy powder mixed in the water, the ice cold water attacks were luckily a minority. Just like the sale of alcohol, which was officially illegal this year. Not that anybody cared too much since alcohol was widely available.
Six girls giving a show on Chaweng beach road, the police stopped traffic for a moment
Who said it was cold?
One of the foam parties going on
Hit the red button and the girl disappears in the water
Lost and found
Broken artillery during and after the battle

Hi Camille,
My wife and I are currently in Koh Samui and are booked to go to Koh Tao today for 2 night and then back here for a night before heading home to tasmania. Given the current weather situation should we still go? Is the ferry going to be comfortable/safe?
Regards
AJ
Hi AJ,
It should be an easy ride over, the wind today is not supposed to pick up until late afternoon/evening. When you come back, it should be sunny again. Tomorrow may see some strong wind but hopefully a dry afternoon.
The ferries used between Koh Samui and Koh Tao are big ferries and are not easily cancelled. As far as I can see at this moment, you should be fine.
what is open today?
Hi Mark,
Shops etcetera will be open today, all official business, like Government and banks won't be open until Thursday 16th April.
