Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 7th January, 2017
Today's weather;
It's still grey and very wet over Koh Samui, third day running now and more torrential rain is expected this morning. The rain isn't necessarily hard, but non stop and relentlessly coming down and there's still a fair bit of wind. Later today, currently predicted to happen around 4pm, the rain may drastically slow down and this may the sign of the rain slowly fading away in general.
The current floods are harsh and seem to be worse than in recent early December 2016 but the 2011 floods on the island still seem to be worse compared to the current situation.
Roads are still flooded due to the relentless amount of rain but the airport was active last night and flights were departing at 11.30pm. The ferries between the mainland and Koh Samui-Koh Phangan-Koh Tao are still running although the situation especially on Koh Phangan seems to be dire.
The mainland in Southern Thailand is also very hard hit, trains stop now in Chumphon, roads and bridges have been wiped away and Nakhon Si Thammarat closed the airport down.
The rain has now also reached the West coast and Phuket is having lots of rain now as well.
Follow my Facebook page for more updates.
Current temp at 7am is 24C, the next 7 hours some 76mm of rain are expected and 124mm over the next 24 hours, from 7am to 7am.
As the flood situation in southern provinces is getting worse posing threat to lives and properties of the people, Interior Minister Anupong Paochinda announced the upgrading of management of large-scale disaster to Level 3, according to ThaiPBS news.
Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 7th January, 2017; The direct connection or road to our house in Plai Laem is still closed down. In front of Big C was passable yesterday but at the traffic lights in Bophud it was still flooded. The situation doesn't seem to get any better until later today, during the late afternoon
Yesterday saw relentless rain almost all day long, except a few dry spells during the morning. The airport was able to open up for a short while and some planes could land and take off. The situation was dire all around the island. Check my Facebook for more updates. Max temp yesterday reached 24C
Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 7th January, 2017; The clouds over Southern Thailand as of 1pm last night Koh Samui is still completely covered but moving on to the outskirts now
The forecast is looking better, still torrential and relentless rain today until around 4pm and after that the rain should drastically slow down and come Monday morning it should start to clear up according to current forecasts. Later next week it should be partially cloudy and we even have some sunshine. The run off water from the hills will still be around for around a week though but things should slowly settle in and get back to normal.

Morning
Is to Road from Maenam pier to lamay beach open?
Hi Christian,
It's probably partially flooded, especially at the Bophud traffic lights area but may be passable.
What about the airport situation?
Hi Alberto,
The airport was open earlier today but right now there doesn't seem to be any movement anymore.
Try to check their website or flight tracker sites.
How long after the rain stops will the beach be swimmable? We have friends who are thinking of canceling, set to arrive Monday? I'm from Southern California and you don't swim in the ocean for nearly a week after torrential rain due to pollution/run off. The beach currently is covered with garbage.
Do you know the total mm rain who has fall down the last week?
Hi Camille not strictly weather related but do you think the mosquitos will be out in force after the rain stops? Thanks Robert
Hello! Is it possible to go from Chaweng to Lipa Noi Pier?
Thank you
Well over 1000mm is my guess
Hi Roberta,
Oh yes they will! :-( Big time!
Hi Djurdjija,
Yes, that should be possible, along the Southern route, shouldn't be a problem but take extra time due to slow moving traffic.
Hi Amy,
Yes, that will be at least a week before the ocean settles down again.
Hi, we are due to fly to samui and then straight onto phangnan on Monday morning with our 1 year old boy. if it has stopped raining by then, do you think it's still advisable to go? Does the rain water hang around for a while? Thanks
Hi Rebecca,
Sorry, I live on Samui, not on Koh Phangan. Can't help you I'm afraid.
Follow your gut instinct, that's usually the best advise to follow.
Dear Camille
Thank you so much for this blog it is a fantastic tool.
We are arriving at Samui on Wednesday, however I cannot find any information about if the An Thong national park and the waterfalls will be opened again right after the rain stops?
As you mention in your blog, it takes 2 days after the rain stops, until things are back to normal - is this also applicable for the activities around Samui?
Best regards
Hans Christian

Ok, thank you so
much!
Hi Hans Christian,
Once the rain stops and the ocean calms down, the daily tour trips will start going out, but it will take a few days before the conditions will be favorable again for snorkeling. Kayaking should be ok.
You're welcome Djurdjija!
Hi Sabdrine,
This is an unusual situation, out of the ordinary. Please do your research and check how the weather in match usually is, when it's not monsoon, please have a look at my archives, half way down the page on my Samui info and weather blog, right hand side, they go back a few years. Open a month that you’re interested in and check one of the last posts of each month, starting with ‘Goodbye to…………’ this post will tell you the weather conditions for that month.
You can also check each individual post for that month if you wish to.
But if you think Samui is all year like this, than maybe the island is indeed not meant to be for you.
Hi Camille! Men and my friend are planing to go to Samui on måndag, do you think that restaurants, massageplaces, gyms and clubs will be operational then? Thanks for a good blogg 🖒
Hi Niclas,
Everything has been open the whole time, as long as they were not flooded.
