Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 5th January, 2017

Today's weather;

It's as expected, dark, grey and very wet. Last night there was plenty of rain and it's now raining non stop since a few hours, from hard to a drizzle but relentless, all around Koh Samui. There's torrential rain expected until around 4pm, when the intensity of the rain is supposed to lessen but it still will continue to rain. Very strong wind to storm like conditions are expected, especially between 10am and 2pm. This is outside of normal monsoon conditions and hopefully we get through today without too much hassle. Still no power cuts but I won't be surprised if the power will cut sometime later today. Expect plenty of floods and they will last most likely until the rain stops. Once the rain stops, today or tomorrow, the floods tend to disappear rather quickly. Current temp at 7am is 25C
Update at 7.30am; it seems that all schools have been cancelled for today, despite that some had exams on the agenda.

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 5th January, 2017

The sky over Koh Samui yesterday, dark and heavy with rain. There was plenty of rain yesterday and plenty of floods, however, it didn't rain all day long and the breaks in-between the rain showers allowed most or all of the floods to recede rather quickly. Today may be a different story

Yesterday saw plenty of rain but with enough breaks in-between the showers to give the plentiful floods enough time to recede rather quickly all over the island. There was a strong wind as well, especially later during the afternoon and early evening and night. Max temp reached 27C

The forecast for today has already been explained at the top of this post, with the rain supposedly starting to slow down around 4pm. Tomorrow there will still be plenty of rain, but not as much as there will be today and the wind will slowly start to calm down. Saturday may still see a little bit of rain during the early morning hours and from there onward the situation should improve with the sun breaking out again and the rain pretty much gone until Thursday, besides a short shower here and there.
Batten the hatches for today though!

Thanks for the update - it's our first day in Koh Samui and not really sure what to do today. We are in bungalows that are showing signs of leaking but hopefully that doesn't get too bad. Any suggestions on what to do today? Don't want to be bored on holiday!

We arrive in Koh Samui today and I was hoping for some sunny weather, doesn't look like we'll get that. We're only there until Saturday too :-(
Hopefully there'll be some breaks and we can at least venture out.

Thanks for keeping us updated through your blog.

Hi Gabby,

There's a bowling alley at Tesco Lotus in Chaweng or try the Escapology at Beach Republic

Hi Ria,

That's very unfortunate. Today I wouldn't expect too many breaks, but hang in there!
Maybe follow my Facebook page as well, it may have more updates.

Hi Camille, I've just seen your Facebook page and some of the photos of the floods in Samui. We're still at the airport waiting to catch our flight to Koh Samui in the airport. Is it still worth us coming to Koh Samui in this weather? I'd hate to get stuck in floods!

Hi Ria,

At Samui airport nothing is happening right now and at the moment I doubt much will happen since the worst is about to start soon.
Today and tomorrow will have floods and plenty of rain.

Thanks for your reply! Do you think we will be okay by Saturday to leave by ferry to Phuket? We need to be in Phuket by Saturday night and not sure if we leave tomorrow or wait till our original plan which was Saturday? Thanks for your advice :)

Hi Gabby,
Come Saturday all weather and traffic should be back to normal.

Hi Camille,

Thanks for your extremely helpful and informative blog. We are staying Lamai and have a flight out tomorrow evening. We have been told that the roads to the airport are already unpassable, but that we may be able to get through using a 4x4 vehicle or truck. Could you recommend a person/service to call to arrange such a pickup. We have an international flight from Bangkok on Saturday morning so we cannot miss our flight. Thank you very much for your help!

Best regards,
Greg

Do you think flights will be running on time from the airport tomorrow evening?

Camille said...

Hi Aran,

Tomorrow evening should be fine, looking at the current predictions, providing they can handle the back log.

Camille said...

Hi Greg,

Your hotel should be able to help you out in finding such a vehicle.
Tomorrow the roads should be a lot more accessible and flights should operate again.

Thanks, just wanted to get your advice, do you think it's wise for us to travel to Koh Samui today and stay until Saturday? Or is it better we just stay put here in Bangkok?

I'm worried that we'll make our way to Koh Samui somehow and then get stuck unable to leave on Sunday.

Appreciate your thoughts seeing as you're there right now.

Thanks!

Ria,

Come Sunday all should be back to normal and I don't expect any problems. Tomorrow will not be that nice on Samui, still a lot of rain but not as much as today and Saturday it should start to improve again.

You will have to make your own decision I'm afraid.

We were in Samui in December for one week and confronted with exactly the same weather, even thought about leaving the island after two days of torrential rains and flooding. I am glad we stayed. Although it seems very unlikely if you look at the sky, it can become sunny within hours!

Flights to Koh Samui from Bangkok have been cancelled. :( sat at the airport for 6 hours only to be told this now.

Apparantly can fly out tommorow

Stay in Bangkok. I've been here a day and there is nothing to do and no end in sight.

John,

The rain has drastically slowed down during the afternoon and most of the floods have started to recede or have mostly gone. Tomorrow should still see rain, a lot, but not as much as today and come Sunday it should be fine again.

Just looked at their flight schedule and everything is still delayed or cancelled at the moment.

Good to hear you still enjoyed Samui in December.
