Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 16th January, 2017

Today's weather;

It's dark and grey again in the sky over Koh Samui and at 4am this morning we had a thunder storm passing over with hard rain. At the moment it's dry but a few light showers are expected today. Current temp at 7am is a cool 24C

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 16th January, 2017

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 16th January, 2017; At last the road in Soi 8 in Plai Laem has collapsed. It was a matter of time when it should happen. During the December rain and floods, the earth underneath part of the road was washed away and during the recent January floods, it got hollowed out even more. Yesterday, during a dry and partially clouded day, the road finally collapsed and I'm afraid it will take a very long time before this will be fixed. Luckily nobody got injured when the road did collapse.

Yesterday saw a partially clouded day with plenty of sunshine peeking through the cloud cover and it stayed dry. Max temp reached 32C

The forecast for the next seven days is not looking that great. The next two days should be the worst days to come during this period, with strong, at times storm like wind and plenty of rain. Not as torrential as early January but plenty enough. Friday may be the only dry-ish day and over the weekend some light rain is expected. It will be interesting to see how the drainage systems will be able to handle this rain, since everything is filled to the brim. Although most roads had dried up, this will be a game changer again.

Hi Martin,

Don't expect any problems at the airport the way things look like right now.

Hi! We are going to aonang on the 20:th of February and later to Samui about a week later. Do you think we should go somewhere else instead? We have hotel arrangements we have to cancel in advance :(

Hi David,

If it's still raining around 20th February, the island has probably sunk into the Gulf of Thailand.

It will be entirely your decision if you want to come or not, I can and will not say anything to that, that's up to you but maybe this helps, please have a look at my archives, half way down the page on my Samui info and weather blog, right hand side, they go back a few years. Open a month that you’re interested in and check one of the last posts of each month, starting with ‘Goodbye to…………’ this post will tell you the weather conditions for that month.
You can also check each individual post for that month if you wish to.

Thanks for the reply Camille!

I understand that you can´t answer if it´s right or wrong to go to Samui in 6 weeks from now. But how damaged are roads and infrastructure etc? My worries is that the flooding has damaged a lot of infrastructure like roads, drainage systems, etc. So that even if the rain stops Samui wouldn´t be a nice place to visit because of that. Like the collapsed road you mentioned.
Or are the damages not that severe so it doesn´t impact a holiday?

Hi David,

Fair question. The infrastructure, like road surfaces are damaged, but not to an extent that it has become dangerous.
The island powers that be are actually dealing fairly well and quickly with some of the immediate issues, like sand on the road, being taken care off.
Potholes will take a bit longer though.
