Hi Mate, I like your posts. I used to live in Bangkok for work years ago.
Now I'm considering moving to Samui with my wife and little baby. Of course locals probably dont want a ton of new people living there, but honestly how is it? I've heard through my contacts that burgleries in homes is really now a big problem? Is it true? and besides that do you ever get "island" crazy......It's hard to get a feel when you only visit samui for a month or less as a tourist....appreciate any honesty. Thanks a mil.
Hi Jason,
Live on Samui is good, I've been here now for almost 11 years and still like it.
Live is fairly convenient with 3 shopping malls (2 x Tesco lotus and 1 Big C) plus a Makro. Starbucks has a couple of outlets and so do MacD, BK and KFC. Plenty of Western food if that's your thing. Cheap Thai food is also widely available, some places are posted on my blog others can be found by trying them out.
There may be some burglaries and possibly more than usual which in my opinion is partly due to a slow economy which results in lesser tourists on Samui so more Thais on Samui without work or less income, so certain crime is on the rise.
Island crazy? I've got a job and a family to take care of and both keep me too busy to get island crazy. Without tham I can see that you need to get off once in a while.
All in all, there are plenty of Westerners living here, some like it and some don't. A good place to get a feel may be the Thai visa forum and check out the Samui sub forum.
Hi Camille,
Thank you for all the information and feedback!
I don't know if we will move to Samui or not, but when we're there on holiday, I'll give ya a contact maybe to do some Diving!
Cheers,
Jason
