Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 7th December, 2016

Today's weather;

We had a dry night and early morning around Koh Samui but a few moments ago it started raining again, very hard and it continues right now. Today should see a change in weather though and the torrential rains should stop, according to the forecast and once that happens, the floods should recede fairly fast, within hopurs in most places and 'hot spots' may take a little bit longer. Today I'm planning on going shopping, so I will see how the current situation is and hpefully be able to post anupdate on my Facebook later today. Current temp at 7am is 25C

Tomorrow I will be off again for a PADI IDC on Koh Phangan, where the weather situation is very similar.

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 7th December, 2016

The road near the gas station opposite the Wharf at Fisherman's Village yesterday, during the late afternoon, a few hours before I arrived back on Koh Samui. There were many people guiding traffic and slowing cars down so their houses wouldn't be flooded by water sweeping up and over the barriers in front of their houses. Some drivers still drive way too fast, causing a lot of structural damage to walls and houses with the water movement caused by their car.

Yesterday it was sunny and dry on Phuket and Khao Lak and most fo the drive back to Donsak where I caught the ferry if was dry as well. Hard rain was only encountered once and for a very short time. The ferry was just about filled up and it was no porblem at all to get moved forward an hour since there was almost nobody at all waiting at the ferry. Who wants to visit Koh Samui right now, right? The ferry ride over was comfortable, no waves and once on Koh Samui, it was dry all the time and the road between Nathon and Plai Laem was just fine, only between Bandara and the Bophud traffic lights were there floods and the immediate area around the traffic lights. Max temp reached 28C

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 7th December, 2016

The the road at the gas station opposite the Wharf at Fisherman's Village was flooded, between Bandara resort and the traffic lights and the road between the traffic and the entrance of Fisherman's Village was also flooded, everything else between Nathon and our house in Plai Laem was flood free. The road surface was wett but no floods but at some places there ist still a lot of water coming down from the mountains, this will continue for several days after all rain will have stopped everywhere else

The forecast predicts the rain to ease up for the next seven days, no more torrential rain, at elast not for hours on an end. There will be showers though, onm a regular base and I wouldn't expect too much sunshine, but at least the floodings should recede fairly soon.

Do 'like' my Koh Samui blog Facebook page and don't forget to use my Camille's Samui hotel recommendation blog and my Camille's Thailand hotel recommendation blog for all your hotel bookings on Koh Samui and around Thailand. By doing so, you will support my blog. Thanks folks!

Hi Camille, I've just arrived in Koh Samui safely. The flight wasn't too bad but we did circle around the airport couple times with some turbulence. Have you seen any sunshine at all the past couple days?

Camille said...

Hi Melissa,
If the flood will be gone will depend on how much more rain we get, once the rain stops, the floods recede rather quickly. Once it starts raining again, it floods relatively quickly again due to the drainage system being at max capacity.
In general I think and hope that you'll be fine, since less rain is predicted, but we now have since 2 hours hard to very hard rain again.

Hi Judy,

You landed in another pout of torrential rain. Welcome nonetheless and I hope you will enjoy your stay.

Hi camille, will arrive in koh samui on Saturday. Did you think the flood will gone by that time.

And also i will stay at Bantai Cluster. Is that area affected by the flood. Tq for your kind advise.

Camille said...

That will depend on the amount of rain coming down today. Once it stops raining, most floods recede very quickly. However , the drainage system is at max capacity at the moment so when it starts raining again, floods are back very quickly as well.

Camille said...

Sorry, no idea where the Bantai cluster is.

Its around lamai beach area... Tq

Floods are everywhere around the island, also in Lamai

Hi Camille, thanks for your blog! We are scheduled to fly from Bangkok to Samui tomorrow afternoon and have a booking for two weeks in the New Star Beach Resort in Chaweng Noi. Do you think it would be wise to postpone or cancel? We don't mind some rain, but we want to be safe, of course. Do you have any idea on how Chaweng Noi is affected? Thanks for your assistance!

Camille said...

New Star is on top of a hill at Chaweng Noi, so no floods. Samui is safe but very wet, please read previous comments and my answers about what to expect for the coming days.
The current hard rain should stop but there's no guarantee.

Hey Camille, thanks for your quick reply! Hilltop sounds wonderful :-) Good to hear that Samui is safe (but wet). I'll be keeping an eye on your blog for any updates. Thanks so much! Regards, Hannes

Hey there. I will be arriving in samui on sunday night, and i will be staying in bangrak area. Do you think the rain is gonna be better by then? And depsite the heavy rain and flood as of now, is it still safe in samui? And pls do advice once you arrive in phangan because i'd be in phangan just few days after samui. Thank u.

Hi Vikram,
Get a taxi from the airport, always the easiest way unless you arranged with the hotel to pick you up.
According to the forecasts that I follow the weather and rain should ease up. It's dry now after heavy rain earlier today.

Hi Arzira,
It should virtually stop raining for the next couple of days, so we'll see and wait how that works out in real life!
All the time it has been safe on Samui, as long as you don't do something silly or stupid, you should be fine.
Providing I can make it tomorrow to Koh Phangan (the morning ferry is cancelled) I will have daily updates on my blog. They ahve very similar weather and problems over there.

Thanks Camille!
Your blog has been really helpful, especially the live updates.

I will be flying in tomorrow.
Shall not bombard you with more questions that are impossible to answer.
Instead, let us pray for sunny weather to return to Samui real soon!

Cheers,
Wong

Hi camille just found your blog and will keep following it with interest. We are visiting koh samui 22nd Dec until 6th Jan staying in lamai. Hopefully no floods and torrential rain! Hey camille, is bophut still flood? Im at chaweng, ,cant travel to bophut via motorcycle.

Camille said...

Hi Julie,
The last couple of days were very unusual and are not what Samui is known for, in respect to monsoon.
However, by the time you arrive there's probably nothing that remembers or shows signs of the current situation.

Unknown said...

Thanks Camille
Hopefully everyone involved in the flooding is safe and well.
Looking forward to our trip so much
Julie

Camille said...

The whole afternoon was dry, most floods have receded by now, should be possible to get to Bophud by bike, just need to find somebody who wants to go.

Camille said...

Hope you will enjoy it Julie!

Hi Camille,

We Have been on koh samui since dec 4 and enjoyed the endless rain. We are thinking of going somewhere else for a little bit of sun. Maybe pattaya?
However, its koh samui and koh Tao We Really wanna experience, do you think its worth sticking around and the sun will return? Most locals suggest the torrential part last around 1week so it should end soon. We Will be leaving for sweden dec 18th.

Regards, Joakim

Hi Joakim,

Very unlikely to get sunshine, although the rain should stop as of now, at least the torrential rain.
The West coast, Phuket, Krabi, Khao Lak, Koh Lanta etc should have sunshine or better weather conditions
