Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 13th November, 2012

Today's weather;

Today we have overcast and a weak sun trying to break through but it's dry again. Current temp at 7am is 27.7C on Koh Samui.

Amphur or municipality in Nathon

Yesterday saw plenty of rain during the morning, including some thunder and strong wind gusts but the remainder of the day stayed relatively dry, besides a couple of local showers in the afternoon. Max temp reached 29.8C

The forecast has become a lot nicer again, overcast until Sunday and rain on Saturday but the freak storm which was predicted for Friday seems to have evaporated.

Don't forget to use my Camille's Samui hotel recommendation blog and my Camille's Thailand hotel recommendation blog for all your hotel bookings on Koh Samui and around Thailand. By doing so, you will support my blog. Thanks folks!

It looks like the Amphoe office right in middle of Nathon, the municipality (Thesaban) office is at 9.5159° N 99.9438° E - you went there in 2010 for me :-)

BTW: Any sign yet on the municipal elections? The four year terms had ended in September, but as the municipality got upgraded to a city now have to wait first for the Election Commission to draw new constituencies.

Andreas,

You're right,. The Amphur is more like the townhouse?

It's quite confusing that Thailand has two administrative structures in parallel - there are the local government units with elected councils and mayor, i.e. the municipalities, TAO and PAO. And there is the central administration which has branch offices of different levels - province, district (Amphoe), subdistrict (Tambon) and finally village (Muban). Everybody working in those offices is an employee of the Ministry of Interior, while the local governments are juristic persons by themselves and thus the employer of their officials.

Thanks for this insightful clarification, confusing indeed although I find my way around on a day to day base, especially with the help of my wife but to translate everything than into English, a nightmare in the making ;-)

Your efforts of publishing daily actual weather update are globally appreciated!

Can I ask where are you getting the longer-term forecast from?

I have holiday planned to Koh Samui between 27-Nov and 04-Dec, and will need to decide soon if we cancel it or not. I'd prefer not to, but the thought of staying in-room for 7 days does not appeal to me, especially since our hotel will be quite far from Chaweng Beach (Conrad).

Last year it was OK in that period, but at the same time I understand that I should not expect too much sun...

Hi Alex,

Thx! It's hard to say how the weather will be during that period, usually that's a very bad moment! But as you already mentioned, last year not too bad, this year seems to be a repeat of last year, so far!
To be honest, it will be a gamble to stay during the mentioned period, you can have a look at my archives, halfway down the page, right hand side, they may help.

The forecast is a 7 day forecast from Windguru, this can be found on my link page.

Good luck with your decision!

Hi Camille, Liam here,

Thanks for such a great blog, I’ve been reading it for a while now and find it really informative! Hopefully you won’t mind me asking you a question as you are such an expert on the weather in Koh Samui…

Three friends and I arrive in koh samui on the 23rd of November, we are all extremely worried about the conflicting reports we have read on the internet that warns people away from Koh Samui due to the weather. Looking at the forcast it looks as though there is lots of thunderstorms on the way during November. Can we expect it to rain all day, or if it does rain will it be short bursts followed by sunshine. Hope you don’t mind me emailing you, keep up the good work!

Hi Liam,

Thanks for your enquiry and the heads up!

Right now the weather looks really good up until 20th November, although typically it should rain cats and dogs and if/when the rainy season starts, we do get days on an end with rain. Right now it looks like a 2nd successive year with not too much rain. Right now, if it rains, it’s just parts of the day but I can’t guarantee it stays that way.

If it helps please have a look at my archives, half way down the page on my Samui info and weather blog, right hand side, they go back a few years. Open a month that you’re interested in and check one of the last posts of each month, starting with ‘Goodbye to…………’ this post will tell you the weather conditions for that month.
You can also check each individual post for that month if you wish to.

Hope this helps for now.
