Somdej Phra Puttajarn (Kiew) passed away today

Somdej Phra Puttajarn (Kiew), abbot of Wat Saket Ratcha Wora Maha Wihan วัดสระเกศราชวรมหาวิหาร, a Buddhist temple (Wat) in Pom Prap Sattru Phai district, Bangkok, passed away today from blood infection. He was 85.

Somdej Kiew was appointed as acting Supreme Patriarch in 2004 after the Supreme Patriarch, His Holiness Somdet Phra Yanasamvara Suvaddhana Mahathera, became ill and has been admitted to Chulalongkorn hospital in 2002.

Leading the monastic region 9, he was appointed the secretary of the Supreme Patriarch in 1965. "Somdej" is the highest title in the Thai monastic circle.

He was born on March 3, 1928 in Koh Samui, as Kiew Chokchai, the fifth of seven children of a Chinese family which earned a living through coconut plantation.

In due time there will be Royally sponsored cremation ceremony for Somdej Phra Puttajarn I would assume.
