Goodbye to January 2013

It's been a month with a few ups and downs.

First the weather though and I can say it was a good month with plenty of sunny days although there was a strong wind occasionally.

The ups included a PADI IDC on Koh Lanta with 10 candidates and since we're at PADI, I received a Certificate of Recognition for Excellence from PADI late on in the month from one of the candidates of the November 2012 PADI IDC on Malapascua in the Philippines.

Our daughter Julia turned 10 this month, which was a great event for us as well!

Funeral of my Mother in law at Wat Plai Laem

The down was the passing away of my Mother in law. A very good hearted woman who will be greatly missed by all of us in the family.

See you all next month.

RIP Currents, be careful out there

Each year people drown on Koh Samui beaches because of rip currents. Yesterday it happened again and as with most victims, it was an elderly Swiss couple, a 70 year old male who tried to rescue his 69 year old wife. very sad.
Since there's not much warning about these rip currents, I can only keep repeating my posts each year and try to warn this way!

Your biggest protection is knowledge – knowing what to do, either to avoid the danger of a rip current, or to save yourself if you are caught in one. There are two things that everyone should learn about rip currents that could save their lives;

-First, when you are on a beach you must be able to recognize the signs of a rip current, and then NOT go into the water anywhere near that area. (The easiest way to save the lives of your family is to stay out of dangerous waters that could kill them.) A rip current carries sand and sediment straight out to sea as a visible plume that cuts through the incoming waves. Typically when you see a break/gap in the incoming waves and the water in that gap has a different color or murkiness than the water on both sides of the gap, then there is probably a rip current moving out to sea through that gap. It is easier to see this pattern when you are higher up on the beach, or better yet, higher up on sand dunes or buildings next to the beach. The attached photo shows two areas with rip currents, one viewed from above and one viewed from beach level.

-Second, if you are caught by a rip current and are being pulled away from shore, the most important thing to remember is not to swim against the current, but to SWIM PARALLEL TO THE SHORE. The rip current will not pull you under the water, so you must not panic. It may be scary that you are being pulled out to sea, but again do not panic, because the rip current is usually very narrow. So if you swim sideways in a direction that is parallel to the shoreline, you will eventually be out of the current, and then you can slowly swim back to shore.
. These seem like two very simple rules. But in a rip-current gap the water may not look rough, and the smooth surface can fool people into thinking it is safe to swim there. And because there is always some type of long shore current moving you down the coast while you’re swimming, it is easy to be unknowingly moved down to a rip-current area. And once you are caught in a rip current it is so easy to panic that people forget to swim parallel to the shore. All one can do is just keep reminding your family of these two rules, so they will remember them even at moments of panic.

Hope somebody reads this and ill remember it when needed. Go out and have fun but be vary careful on Chaweng and Lamai beaches during January and February!

Lan Saka

Here's a short impression of Lan Saka in the province of Nakon Si Thammarat, where we spent the weekend and went for a 10.5km mini marathon, organised by the local hospital and my first race in the new year.
We had a good time and enjoyed our time there and hopefully we can share this with these pictures.

The best Ozone or O3 in Thailand

As already pictured in an earlier post, in September 2011 Lan Saka was awarded the best ozone in Thailand predicate and we visited the location just outside of the city, on a hill where this monument in commemoration is erected and with some great views.

The Kaeow Surakan Cave, just outside of down town Lan Saka

The cave pictured above is nice and has a wide opening with two Buddha statues in it. If you have a guide you may go inside the tunnel system but this is not recommended if you don't know your way around.

Baan Sai Klong restaurant

Saturday we had lunch at this lovely place, the Baan Sai Klong restaurant, one of the best lunches in a long time. Some real good traditional Thai food to be had (no English menu available but very friendly staff) with real heavy cutlery, the latter a rare occasion in Thailand. The food was just delicious and the place was very nicely decorated and made out of teak wood! They're open between 11am and 9pm. Leave Lan Saka South bound and just after a kilometer or so it's on your left hand.

Small river streams like this are everywhere

The scenery is just beautiful with small streams like above all over the place and mountains all around. The Khao Luang is the highest mountain in Southern Thailand. Breath taking views are not hard to find, even if you just follow the main road.

View over the mountains

Just cruising around as we did is fun around Lan Saka and you can find plenty of water falls and occasions or views to have a road side stop and take the scenery in. Very enjoyable indeed.

Karom watrefall in the Khao Luang National park

The national park is well worth a visit, see my previous post on the park and enjoy your day out! The city of Lan Saka is maybe not that well known to the average tourist but since this weekend I can recommend a visit here and it's slightly off the beaten track.

Yesterday wed rove back from Lan Saka under a nice blue sky for most of the day and on Samui it was a sunny day. Max temp reached 29C

Khao Luang National Park and Karom Waterfall, Lan Saka

During our visit to Lan Saka, where I participated this morning in the 3rd Lan Saka mini marathon, organized by the local hospital, we also visited the Khao Luang National Park today, nearby Lan Saka.

The entrance to the park

The park is easily to find when you're leaving Lan Saka in a Southern direction. We stayed at the Loy Chalet hotel, but opposite the entrance on the main the road is the Khao Luang hotel which looks very promising (next to the river which allows tubing) and just before the actual entrance is a resort and inside the park you can also find accommodation. Plenty of choices are available.

As always in Thailand, dual pricing is the norm of the day

After showing the lady at the entrance proof that I pay taxes in Thailand and a short preach by her about having to show some sort of proof like a work permit or the like, I did pay the Thai entrance fee of 40.-THB and the children went for free! Strangely enough there was a 30,-THB car fee which is nowhere displayed!

The entrance to the Karome waterfall inside the park

The biggest attraction at the park must be the Karome waterfall. One of many in the area but surely the biggest and most spectacular one.

Level 4 of the waterfall

The waterfall has 19 levels but only 7 are accessible for the public. The levels have also names, with the last one, 'Naan Daat Fah' the most spectacular and it includes a big basin.

A steep view down

The park is very well maintained and clean and the park rangers seem to be doing a good job for which the entrance fee is well deserved and apparently used to better the park.
For instance; various toilets are build on the road leading up to the main waterfall level, an excellent service and not that typical for Thai national parks, from what I've seen so far.

Signage along the road, it's 'only' 600 meters to the main level!

All around the park is well maintained, as the picture of the signage above shows, the toilets proof and the it was tidy and clean. Hats off to the park rangers for taking care so well.

View along the way, very impressive and spectacular views are guaranteed!

The road leading up and down again

As already mentioned, all is very well maintained and the roads are well taken care of. Any fallen trees blocking the road are sawed in half and removed from the paths and the paths seem to be fairly new and in a good state. It made a safe impression on me which can not always be said of many places in Thailand.
The walk up is 'only' 600 meters but seems a lot longer but because the paths in the hill are shaded, it's not too bad and on a regular base some seating arrangements can be found for a well deserved rest or for taking the beautiful scenery and nature in.

The main waterfall; Naan Daat Fah

The walk up is well worth it, once you reach the final waterfall you are presented with a fantastic view of the fall and a big basin in front of it. There's a big shaded picnic or relaxing are with benches and a sala. Bring your own food and/or drinks though, there's nothing for sale this far up the hill.

The basin in front of the Naan Daat Fah waterfall, nice and cold but apparently not open for swimming

King Rama VI initials

In 1917, King Rama VI visited the park and carved his initials into the rock (right click on the picture and open in a new tab for a better view), another reason to make it all the way to the top!

A great time was had by all 4 of us, the children loved it and my wife enjoyed it also. If in this part of the world, it's well worth a stop and checking out or maybe even plan a trip here! The whole Lan Saka area is nice and worth checking out.

Reggae Pub Chaweng, 25th Anniversary on 12th February 2013

This is my 14th year on Koh Samui and there were a few constants during this time, one of them is the Reggae Pub.
I've spend a few evenings/nights in there with friends and also some outings with my wife were had here.
The Reggae Pub is a big name in Samui's nightlife, the whole street leading up to the Reggae Pub is even named after it, Soi Reggae!

Reggae Pub Chaweng, 25th Anniversary 12th February 2013

Big party ahead!

One of my memories is the drinking beer as fast as you can contest, which I won at one occasion. There must be even a picture of that floating around somewhere!
DJ Sergio is also unforgettable with the Reggae Pub. Some good times were had although now it's been a while since I last visited.

Food on wheels; Ice cream hand pushed

This month's addition to my Food on wheels series is straight from downtown Saladan on Koh Lanta where this vendor is selling ice cream (probably in a bun if you wish so) to Thais and foreigners/tourist alike. I spotted him yesterday and he fits the bill for this series.

This vendor sells old and traditional Thai style ice cream. He picks up a big chunk of ice cream wrapped in paper and cuts it up in 4 pieces. Your flavor options include durian, taro, chocolate and various other options. Well worth trying out!

Ice cream on Koh Lanta

I posted many ice cream related articles in this series already and it's not hard to understand why, considering the warm climate of Thailand. An ice cream is nice and cool during a warm or hot day.
The interesting part I liked about him is that he walks around, pushing his cart with traditional ice cream blocks, advertising his goods in both Thai and English.

Great to see so many variations on the same theme, in this case specifically for ice cream and in general about the many forms of vehicles being used.
