Today's it's Visakha Bucha Day (วิสาขบูชา), this day commemorates the birth, enlightenment (nirvāna), and death (Parinirvāna) of Gautama Buddha in the Theravada or southern tradition.
In Thailand part of the celebration is the 'Wien Tien' by circling the bodh, or main hall of the local Temple or Wat, carrying candles, incense and lotus flowers.
This significant and traditional holy day is also observed throughout Indonesia where it is known as Waisak Day, although I doubt that we will see or notice anything here on Gili Air, where the local population is Muslim.
