Goodbye to July 2018

Goodbye to July 2018

It's the last day of this month and a good moment to say Goodbye to July 2018.
Like the previous five years, there was plenty of tropical showers and a few thunderstorms. Some 18 days in this July saw rain, with a few days topping 40mm.
There was also plenty of wind, at times even very hard wind and for a couple of days we had a bit of a storm going over the island. The temperatures reached a maximum of 34C and a minimum of 25C during this recent month.
All in all a fairly typical July. Having aid that, there were also sunny days and once the sun was out, it got warm to hot fairly quickly.

This morning there's cloud cover over the island and the current temperature at 6am is 28C. It looks more likely for a small and short shower to happen than the sun to come out today.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 23rd July – 29th July 2018

It's Sunday morning and time to get going with the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 23rd July – 29th July 2018.
No run today since I injured my right leg last Monday. At the moment it looks that I will be at least one more week without running. It's also not sure if I can make it in time for the Samui Festival marathon come 30th September.

Back to Koh Samui's weather though, it's fairly cloudy with a weak sun trying to pry through the cloud cover. Current temperature at 8.30am is 28C but it should get into the lower thirties Celsius today.

I find myself back in Moalboal in the Philippines today. I'm in the middle of the current July 2018 PADI IDC. We are in the rainy season here but today it's nice and sunny. Current temperature at 9.30am local time (1 hour ahead of Thailand) is 30C

Last week the weather was fairly steady. A few tropical showers, a bit of sunshine and strong wind. Fairly typical July weather. Maximum temperatures ranged from 27C to 34C

The forecast for next week predicts showers between Monday and Thursday with some hard wind come Wednesday evening and night. We're coming to the end of this month and hopefully we will have better conditions in August. Stay tuned for more updates.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 16th July – 22nd July 2018

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 16th July – 22nd July 2018

Here we are, another Sunday and time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 16th July – 22nd July 2018 after my long slow Sunday morning run has been completed, including a morning nap. All in preparation for the Koh Samui marathon as part of the Samui Festival come 30th September.

At almost 1pm today it's partially cloudy and the sun is peaking out a bit. Current temperature is 31C with a fair bit of wind.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 16th July – 22nd July 2018

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 16th July – 22nd July 2018; The running and athletic track in Baan Namuang. Last week the kila Amphur or the yearly Samui sports event for children and their respective schools was held here once more. For the first time I found out that on the last day, the Friday, there's also a competitive race for adults, as long as you're associated in a local club. Which I ain't! Yet!

Last week saw a lot of strong wind throughout the week. The rain wasn't as bad as predicted though and we had only a few showers last week. There were a lot of clouds hanging around but we also had a couple of very sunny and hot afternoons.
Maximum temperature hit 33C and the lowest temperature last week was 25C.
Humidity ranged on most days between 55 and 74 but we had two days with a humidity between respectively 66 to 88 and 70 to 94.
The maximum wind speed ranged from 23 to 26 (mph).

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 16th July – 22nd July 2018; A much asked question by me blog readers. Now hopefully answered once and for all!

The forecast for next week looks similar to last week, with still a fair bit of wind but not as strong as last week and it should be mostly cloudy. For the rain, as of Wednesday you may expect daily tropical showers, short but possibly hard and for good measure, there may be a thunderstorm or two as well.
With a bit of luck the sun may peak out as well during next week.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 9th July – 15th July 2018

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 9th July – 15th July 2018

Sunday morning, long slow distance run in the bag (26km this morning in training for the Samui  Festival marathon come 30th September) and time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 9th July – 15th July 2018.

It's almost noon and so far it has been a nice morning. Very early on there was a bit of sunshine in apartially cloudy sky but now it is all cloudy again and at 11.40am we have a 29C temperature. No rain is expected or forecast but a fair wind is blowing.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 9th July – 15th July 2018; The seemingly never ending construction on Koh Samui, This looks like a new resort being build on the road between Choengmon and Chaweng. Just after the hill coming out of Choengmon, in a relatively sharp downwards curve directly after the hill.

Last week we saw some very hard wind at times and it reached storm quality at some moments. There were a few days with heavy afternoon rains and sometimes some night rain as well. Towards the end of the week we had a few times the sun break through again. Maximum temperatures reached around 33C but overall it was nice and cool.

The forecast for next week is more strong wind between Tuesday and Thursday with plenty of little showers on these three days. Lots of cloudy skies and most likely not too much sunshine is expected for next week. Still, I hope you can enjoy your stay on the island when you are here for next week. Be careful with booking trips out in the open sea during mid week though!

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 2nd July – 8th July 2018

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 2nd July – 8th July 2018

Sunday morning, long slow distance run done and time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 2nd July – 8th July 2018.
Today it's nice and blue, with a thin layer of clouds and at 11am it's 30C. It's going to be a hot day, enjoy it whilst it last, since the forecast for next week is not looking very good.

Last week saw some hard thunderstorms and tropical showers, mostly during the afternoon and/or evening/night. During the afternoon the wind also seems to pick up each day.
Maximum temperatures ranged in the lower thirties Celsius.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 2nd July – 8th July 2018

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 2nd July – 8th July 2018; The Guan Yu statue in Hua Thanon. Well worth a visit to get a glimpse of the Hainanese culture on Koh Samui. This can be observed in the temple with the statue and the original Hainan style house still available in Hua Thanon. The Samui Festival marathon event, come 30th September will have a marathon turning point just a few hundred meters short of this temple.

For next week there's a lot of rain and very strong winds predicted. The wind will start to pick up tomorrow and reach maximum strength Tuesday evening all the way through to Friday morning. This will be accompanied by plenty of rain and isolated showers. Monsoon is covering all of Thailand but Samui is not getting the worst of it.
Stay tuned and despite the not so great forecast, I do hope you will enjoy your time on Koh Samui if you will be here this week.

Welcome to July 2018

Welcome to July 2018

A new month has started and is already 4 days old, so it's time to say 'Welcome to July 2018'.
July is a month with a bit of everything, sunny days, windy days and plenty of rainy days. July is a mini version of the rainy season, not as bad as as on the West coast, the Andaman side with Phuket, Khao Lak and Koh Lak for instance, but still a fairly wet month.
The first three days saw rain in two out of three days during the afternoon and evening and/or night and today is looking like there will be some rain soon. It's just past 1pm.
For the next seven days some hard wind and plenty of rainy moments are expected, likely to continue past the next seven days.
The last 4 versions of July were windy and rainy, laced with a few sunny days.

Welcome to July 2018

Welcome to July 2018; The yearly Ban Plai Laem school party was held last week. Although none of our children is currently visiting this school, we still visited, partly because my wife was dancing with a troupe of local Plai Laem women. Nope, that's not her on stage! As each year, it was busy with lots of excited children and parents, performing and watching the children on stage.

No events are scheduled at the moment for this month, if that changes, I will update the blog accordingly. One thing to put in your agenda though is the bi-monthly Green Market, which will be held on Sunday 15th July at the Elysee Boutique Resort at Fisherman's Village. Always a great and enjoyable afternoon.

If you find yourself on Koh Samui during this 2018 version of July, I hope you will enjoy yourself nonetheless!

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 25th June – 1st July 2018

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 25th June – 1st July 2018

It's Sunday morning and time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 25th June – 1st July 2018. Coming live from Don Sak, the village where the ferries from and to Koh Samui arrive and depart. The reason we are here is a running event, the Don Sak hospital half marathon. No real surprise there!

It's partially cloudy over Koh Samui with a current temperature of 29C at 11am. Expect possibly some rain during the late afternoon or early evening.

In Don Sak it's very similar, although not too many clouds are out and about here. Similar temperature as on Koh Samui in Don Sak.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 25th June – 1st July 2018; New statues can be enjoyed at Wat Bophud or Wat Bo Phuttaram, near Fisherman's Village.

Last week saw a fairly good week with two days of evening and night showers. Maximum temperatures reached around 33C

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 25th June – 1st July 2018

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 25th June – 1st July 2018; For the first time ever, my wife and I visited the chedi looking out over Don Sak. We always saw it looking out over the ocean when we came in with the Don Sak bound ferries. Yesterday we finally had time to give it a visit. Some great views can be enjoyed here.

Next week is not looking too great, every day may have some afternoon showers with a fair bit of wind. The sun may be out during the daytime though. Come next Friday, we may have three days of quite a bit of rain and fairly strong winds, so it's worthwhile keeping a finger on the pulse and see how this develops.
When on Samui, I do hope you will still have an enjoyable time!
