Goodbye to December 2019

Goodbye to December 2019

The last day of December and of the year and absolutely time to say Goodbye to December 2019!

It was a mild December. The first two weeks of this months saw some rain, but nothing compared how it can be.This years rainy season was almost non existent! Yes, we had some showers this months, but it was all within reason. All in all a month above average on the weather front. Plenty of partially clouded skies with some sunshine were enjoyed. Occasionally we had blue skies as well. A very good weather end to the year!

Right now at 9am it's 28C under a partially cloudy sky. A nice last day of the year is in the making. Enjoy tonight's celebrations around the island but be careful with drinking and driving!

All the best for the new year, that it may be a healthy and successful year!

The Guan Yu statue in Hua Thanon. Part of the Chinese culture here on Koh Samui. Especailly Hua Thanon is well known for it's original old style houses. Build in typical Hainanese style.

December ended also well for me at the running level. My two races this month, a half marathon in Surat Thani and a 5km race in Nathon, both ended with new personal bests! I'm looking forward to bringing this form into the new year's races.
It was also nice to spend most of the month at home.

Take care and see you next year!

Please do 'like' my Koh Samui blog Facebook page and enjoy the beaches around the island or in front of your hotel or resort and get some well deserved rest and a break.

If you're done resting or need something else to do, there's plenty of things on offer on and around Koh Samui, you can go snorkeling or diving or take a dive course.

Join me in a private dive trip with yours sincerely!

You can also enjoy some of the trips I recommend, like a half day gourmet lunch and snorkeling trip at the Southern part of Koh Samui or a photography trip where you get to see the most photo genetic spots on the island or go for a drinks tasting tour if you like a tipple or two.

You may also opt for a very special dinner experience at The Thai Experience. Behind closed doors, reservation only and a very enjoyable and well worthwhile way of spending an evening on Samui. Authentic Thai food and a great atmosphere. Can highly recommend this experience.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 23rd December – 29th December 2019

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 23rd December – 29th December 2019

It's Sunday morning and on this page that means that the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 23rd December – 29th December 2019 is due.

The Sunday morning run has been done and dusted. A 5km race in Nathon in a new PB with a 4'13 pace. I cam in 6th all over in a field of about 5-600 runners. Unfortunately there were only trophies for the first 5 runners. Three guys well below 20 and two guys in their early twenties. I did well!

It's partially cloudy this morning and the current temperature at 11am is 28C. Nice and cool, despite the sun being out. Lovely weather conditions. This morning during the run it was even cooler. I love this time of the year on Koh Samui.

A view on the piers in Nathon. This is also where the start and finish of my 5k race was this morning. Weather conditions were very similar this morning. The picture is take at the far end of Nathon boulevard. Kind of opposite Kobori, the Japanese restaurant.

Last week was a nice week. We kept it dry until yesterday. All other days were sunny to partially cloudy. Some afternoons had complete overcast but no rain. Once more, adding to the already nice December 2019 month.
The maximum temperature last week got up to 31C on a few occasions. Yesterday night, it dropped to 22C as minimum temperature.

The forecast for next week is looking good. A fair amount of wind, to cool things down. However, New Years Eve may see some rain. Let's wait and see with our own eyes if that will actually happen. It probably won't stop the revelers in their parties all around the island.
Enjoy the last days of this year and all the best wishes for the new year to come to you!

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 16th December – 22nd December 2019

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 16th December – 22nd December 2019

It's Sunday morning, 10am and time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 16th December – 22nd December 2019. It's nice and sunny this morning and my long slow distance run is already in the can for today.

At 10am we have a partially clouded sky but the sun is peeking out. Current temperature is 28C. Nice and cool, just the way I like it. No guarantee there will be no rain. Possibly before or around lunch time we may have a shower or two.

The back wall of a restaurant, the Riangthong Bakery, in Nathon. Conveniently turned into a home shrine. Many shop owners of Chinese ascendancy have similar shrines in their shops or homes.

Last week started out nice, with a sunny Monday and Tuesday. However, from Wednesday until yesterday, we had clear early morning skies. Come lunch time or just before, the dark wet clouds moved. Heavy with rain. We had a few strong showers. However, mostly it was drizzle for a few hours on an end. Nothing too serious, but good to raise the ground water levels. It seemed more of a rainy season the last 4 days compared to all of November and the first 2 weeks of December combined.
Maximum temperature reached 33C on Tuesday. The minimum temperature was fairly consistent at 24C all week long. Except for yesterday when 23C was reached a few times.

The forecast for next week, the Christmas week, is looking good. Rudolph and his fellow reindeer are not supposed to meet a lot of rain next week. The sun should be back out again and the unusual good and favorable rainy season pf 2019 continues.

Enjoy this busy period on the island. Happy holidays to you all.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 9th December – 15th December 2019

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 9th December – 15th December 2019

Sunday morning and time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 9th December – 15th December 2019. This time coming from Surat Thani where I just participated in a half marathon.

On Koh Samui it's nice and sunny. Not exactly what you expect this time of the year. It's already 29C at 10am on the island. Get ready for a hot one!

On the other hand, Surat Thani is having overcast and it looks like it will rain at some stage today. Current temperature at 10am is also 29C
My half marathon went well. Although the total race distance on my GPS is 21.64km, I managed what I wanted to do. Run a half marathon under one hour and forty minutes. I did just that with a handful of seconds to spare. Unfortunately I only place 7th in my age group 50-59 out of 177. There were only 5 trophies per age category.

Graffiti on a wall in Bang Makham, driving towards Nathon. There are a few very interesting graffiti pieces on the island. You need to know here to find them though.

Last week was nothing like how it should be or can be expected during this time of the year. We has plenty of sunshine, partially cloudy skies and no rain. Not really your typical rainy season on Koh Samui and the surrounding islands. Maximum temperatures reached 31C. The minimum temperature got stuck at 21C at night. Very nice and agreeable weather last week indeed!

Picking the BIB number yesterday at Koh Lamphu in Surat Thani. This morning I participated in the Surat Thani half marathon. I achieved a bew personal best on the half marathon distance.

The forecast for next week is looking really good. Partially clouded to blue skies. Maybe an occasional tropical shower. The very nice weather keeps holding on. Enjoy your stay on the island before it will get busy around Christmas and New Year.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 2nd December – 8th December 2019

Early Sunday morning and time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 2nd December – 8th December 2019.
I'm sitting in Cebu City in the Philippines right now. However, I should be back on Koh Samui later tonight. A long travelling day ahead. A long slow Sunday morning run of two hours already behind me.

The sky over Koh Samui is overcast but it's dry in Plai Laem for the time being. At 7am it's 26C and some parts around the island may have rain.

In Cebu City it's partially cloudy and current time at 8am it's 26.2C. Soon I will be making my way to the airport. A long day of travelling lays ahead of me.

The restaurants on site at the Namuang waterfall. Well worth stopping for and checking out the menu. Barbecued chicken and som tam always goes down well. With some sticky rice and a fresh coconut.

Last week it rained almost every day, except Friday and Saturday. Maximum temperatures still hit 32C in the beginning of the week. The lowest temperature during the night time reached 20C

Malapascua island in the Philippines. White beach. The most touristy part of the island. The Philippines are mostly catholic and you're reminded of that on a regular base, even on the beach.

The forecast for next week is windy until Monday. Rainy until Thursday morning. Good and mostly dry from Friday onward. Saturday the sun can make it's grande entrance again. Enjoy your time on the island. This rainy season was a very mild one compared to most other years that I am on the island.

Welcome to December 2019

Welcome to December 2019

Welcome to December 2019 folks! The last month of this year!
Typically the first two weeks of this month are not that great. The rainy season can roar it's ugly tail very well in that time frame. On the other hand, the second part of December tends be a lot better in general. The weather should start clearing up. There still may be a few rainy days, but the later we are in December, theoretically, the better the weather should be.
The last couple of years have been fairly classic December months. Real rainy season weather in the first half of the month. A fair to  nice second half of the month.

Welcome to December 2019

Welcome to December 2019

View over Bang Rak bay with Big Buddha. Taken from Lai Laem Soi 7, the road to the Six Senses Resort.

The first week of December is looking like a mild rainy season is about to hit. The wind is picking up and most days should have rain. Nothing too hard and it looks like not non stop. Considering we're in early December, not too shabby!

Welcome to December 2019

Welcome to December 2019

Malapascua in the Philippines. The day typhoon Kammuri (Tisoy) will make landfall at midnight. We have a strong wind, but the wind changed direction last night. This means that our bay at Thresher Cove Resort is now at the lee side! We should just be fine today. The typhoon is north of us. By the time it makes landfall, it should be upgraded to a hurricane scale 3 though.

Enjoy your time on the island. It's fairly quiet right now, but the closer we get to Christmas and New Year, the busier and crazier it will get.
Enjoy the island and it's neighbours and see you soon.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 25th November – 1st December 2019

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 25th November – 1st December 2019

It's another Sunday morning and time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 25th November – 1st December 2019.

On Koh Samui we have a partially cloudy sky. At 8am the current temperature is 27C. Really enjoyable. Later today some rain may drift over the island though.

In the meantime, I'm still on Malapascua in the Philippines. A small island at the most northern tip of Cebu island. I completed my Sunday morning slow, long distance run. A nice and relaxing 2 hour run. It's 28C at 9am local time. Partially cloudy to cloudy and still nice. Over the next two days we're expecting a typhoon to hit the Philippines and we should be on the outskirts of this typhoon.

Flash flood in Bophud, one of the well known hot spots on Samui.

Last week was not so great on Koh Samui. At last the rainy season caught up with us and it rained almost every day. Still nothing like a more standard rainy season. However, not as nice as the previous November weeks. Maximum temperatures reached 32C and the lowest temperature dropped down to 22C.
Still a fairly nice week, considering it's the last November week.

This is how most roads on Malapascua look like. Especially near Thresher Cove Resort in the north eastern corner of the island, where I stay. Very idyllic.  Cars are not allowed on the island.

The forecast for the first December week.  The wind should pick up during the week. Regular light showers are expected throughout the week. Nothing too serious. Not like non stop rain, but a fairly wet week lies ahead of us. Still very good considering it's supposed to be the rainy season.

Goodbye to November 2019

Goodbye to November 2019

It's the last day of that dreaded rainy season month and a good moment to say goodbye to November 2019. Problem is, if you can call it a problem, that there was hardly anything to dread last month.
This years rainy season didn't really start until the last week of November.
Before that, the first 3 weeks of this month, were beautiful. Lots of sunshine, lots of blue or partially clouded skies and yes, there was an occasional shower. However, nothing like we sometimes experience during a 'normal' or standard rainy season. That was all kept for the last week of the month.
Here the rainy season kind of roared it''s ugly and wet mouth, but it was ll within reason. Yes, there were of course the known hot spots where the flash floods happen. All in all though, an exceptionally nice November this 2019 version.

Even this morning, it is starting out partially clouded with a 25C temperature at 7am.

Goodbye to November 2019

Goodbye to November 2019

Broken spirit houses are placed next to the road in Choengmon. Near the Tongsai Bay hotel. Have you ever seen this before? If a spirit house, which is used to protect and bless the house you live in, breaks, it placed on a raod. Typically it's placed on a location where many accidents happen or happened. It's common use to honk your motorbike or car horn three times when you pass such a location. These stretches of broken spirit houses can be found all over Koh Samui and for that matter, all over Thailand.

The last third of this month I find myself on Malapascau in the Philippines, teaching a PADI IDC here. The next coming days we should be under the influence of typhoon Kammury, We're on the outskirts of it though. It will be interesting though.

Time to look forward though, tomorrow is the start of a new month. We're also closing in on the end of the year! Always exciting times.
Enjoy your time on the island and let's cross our fingers that the rain isn't too bad over the next couple of weeks.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 18th November – 24th November 2019

It's Sunday morning and time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 18th November – 24th November 2019.
I'm in the Philippines right now. On the small island of Malapascua, which is at the northern point of Cebu island. I will be here for another two weeks. A PADI IDC is in the making here. The weather is grand in the mornings here but mostly cloudy in the afternoons. Occasionally a showers hits. Current temperature at 9am is 30C

In the meantime, back on Koh Samui it also looks lovely. at 8am local time we have a blue sky and the Celsius is working it's way up. Right now it's 27C. Expect an unexpected hot and dry day in late November!

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 18th November – 24th November 2019

The Imperial Boathouse has been under construction for well over a year by now. Last week I got a first glance at the entry area. Still a lot of work needs to be done!

Last week saw another a-typical November week in the Samui archipelago. We had a few sunny and hot days. On the other hand, we had a few rain showers on Tuesday en Wednesday as well. But nothing like during a typical rainy season. Maximum temperature last week reached 33C. The minimum temperature dipped down to 22C during the very late nights / early mornings.

In front of my room on Malapascua in the Philippines. A small beach that is used for repairing local boats. As you can see, the boats are/have outriggers. A very different way of building boats compared to Thailand.

The tail end of this month might slowly show what the rainy season is like. Come Tuesday the wind starts to pick up and the rain starts to show up. Still nothing too serious but it looks like the nice a-typical November days are coming to an end.
If you are on the island, I hope you will enjoy it!

The long run is in the bag, a ran a half marathon distance as part of my training schedule. Come 15th December the Surat Thani half marathon is on the program.

It's nice and warm with just a few clouds in the sky. At 10.30am the current temperature is already 31C. Not bad for a November!

Wat Plai Laem earlier this week, during the yearly Loy Kratong festival. The Meh Guan statue at night time.Well lit up and popular as ever.

Last week around Koh Samui was gorgeous. Plenty of sunshine, including a blue sky all day long on Wednesday. The rest of the week was partially cloudy. We had just the one shower in Plai Laem on Friday.
Maximum temperature last week reached just one time 34C. The minimum dropped to 22C.
So far this has been a tremendous month of November. Hardly any rain and plenty of sunshine. Not your typical rainy season month at all. Let's see how things look like for next week.

Plai Laem, this morning, under a nice and sunny sky. A few clouds can be seen but it looks like another nice day.

For next week the forecast is looking good until Tuesday. We may have a little bit of rain that day. Wednesday the wind will pick up. Peaking on Thursday. This goes hand in hand with possibly some rain showers. Come the weekend, it should all have calmed down again.
It looks like this may turn into a very gentle November indeed. let's cross our fingers.

It's Sunday morning, that means it's time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 4th November – 10th November 2019.

The long run is in the can and I find myself in Khao Lak. Tomorrow I will be on my way back to Koh Samui.

It's partially clouded this morning around Koh Samui and at 8.30am the current temperature is a very cool 23C. The morning may see a shower or even a thunderstorm.

In Khao Lak it's around 27C and cloudy to partially cloudy. Since yesterday there's no rain. The ocean is flat and the diving is improving at near by dive sites.

Lamai beach, earlier this week, as seen from White Sand resort. This is near Hin Ta, Hin Yai. Nice and quiet and no waves. Pretty good for November.

Last week gave us a rather untypical November week. Plenty of sunshine and hardly any rain. Maximum temperature reached 33C. The lowest temperature during the night time didn't drop below 24C. A really nice November week indeed.

The obligatory updated picture of Rua 817 in Khao Lak. It seems like I'm documenting the ever changing landscape at the boat. A new wall has been build around the boat. It's still an impressive monument of the 2004 tsunami.

Next week does also look good. The second November week of this year shows predicts some light showers from Wednesday onward. Nothing too serious though. Specifically not like the rainy season mode that November may have later this month.
Enjoy it while it lasts and if you're on the island, now is still a good time to go out and about.

Please do 'like' my Koh Samui blog Facebook page and enjoy the beaches around the island or in front of your hotel or resort and get some well deserved rest and a break.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 28th October – 3rd November 2019

It;s Sunday morning and a good time to check the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 28th October – 3rd November 2019.
The running is out of the way, we went all the way to Rajjaprabha Dam, just South of Surat Thani. The International Mountain Marathon event was on, I participated in the 10km race only though. I managed to place 7th in my age group of 50-59 years old.

It's 10am and the current temperature is 29C under a partially cloudy sky with plenty of sunshine. It looks like a nice day is in the making,

At Rajjaprabha Dam it's a slightly cooler but also partially clouded. It started out really nice with a clear sky earlier this morning.

Big Buddha on Koh Samui. Great location to visit, enjoy the views and get some real good pictures. There's a beautiful view over Bang Rak bay among others.

Last week some a mixed weather bag move over Koh Samui. The maximum temperature hit 34C last week, The minimum temperature got stuck at 23C. There were a few tropical showers and some thunderstorms. Nothing too serious though. That's probably coming later this month. November is well known for it's rainy season around Koh Samui.

After the International Mountain Marathon at Rajjaprabha Dam near Surat Thani. I participated in the 10k distance and my family in the 5k distance. Our eldest daughter couldn't join us since she had extra study lessons at school today. The dam lake is in the background.

The forecast for next week is a fair bit clouds, possibly partially cloudy skies and a few showers are possible throughout the week.
Enjoy this coming week, as long as it seems to stay dry. Once we move towards mid November, the rainy season may roar it's 'ugly' head.

Welcome to November 2019

Welcome to November 2019

Day one of a new month and we say a warm Welcome to November 2019! We need that warm welcome! November means for Koh Samui's the rainy season is here!
Our rainy seasons kind of runs from mid-November through to mid-December. Very occasionally we have a nice and dry rainy season, but don't bet on it.
More typically it may rain fro days on an end with all the fun that comes or goes along with it. Flash floods, flooded roads and water just about everywhere. Your laundry can't get dry and become moldy. The fun just doesn't stop.

Many times, small boats and vessels can't go out because the waves are too high. It's all about to happen soon.
Right now however, around 10am it's partially cloudy and the sun has been in and out behind the clouds. With a nice and cool 28C, it's great. However, towards next weekend, the rain might start showing up.

Welcome to November 2019

The big statue of a monk at Wat Bophud. This is Luang Pu Thuat. He was born in 1582 (2125 BE) and died 1682 (2225 BE) in Ayer Kala, Lenggong, Perak, Malaysia. He is a revered Buddhist monk who lived in Siam. He is said to have performed miracles. All over Southern Thailand you can find temples with massive statues of him. This is our Samui one. Many provinces have one or more big statues of this monk.

If you find yourself on Koh Samui during November, I hope you will still be able to enjoy your time here. Hopefully this rainy season isn't going to be too bad. Let's cross our fingers

Goodbye to October 2019

Goodbye to October 2019

It's the last day of this month and time to say Goodbye to October 2019! We do this with a cloudy but dry sky at 7.30am. Come 8.45am it started to rain though.

This month of October has been a a fairly good month. Yes, we had rain almost every week. Some weeks more, other weeks less. On the other hand, we also had our share of sunshine. So, all in all, not a bad October at all. The rainy season hasn't started yet although a few times it alerted us that's it not far way anymore.

We had a good time with the family, the children had most of this month off from school. This allowed us to make some short trips on the mainland. We visited Surat Thani, Hua Hin, Samut Songkhram and Ratchaburi province. Last weekend we had a repeat visit to Surat Thani and had a look at the city of Chaiya. Here we found an lovely restaurant named Baan Pakwaan. Check it out for a great lunch.

Goodbye to October 2019

A new resort under construction between Choengmon and Chaweng. Although the occupancy rate of the Samui hotels has been very low this year, new resorts are still being build.

Hope you had a good time and enjoyed Koh Samui during your visit. Keep checking in here and don't hesitate to contact me, for questions, inquiries or to book some tours.

Now it's on to the next month, November! This month usually brings lots of rain. More on that in tomorrow's blog about welcoming November 2019!

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 21st October – 27th October 2019

Ir's early Sunday morning and time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 21st October – 27th October 2019. My family and myself are in Surat Thani for the weekend. The long slow Distance run is in the bag. Off to new adventures later today on the mainland. Tomorrow school begins again.

On Koh Samui there's a partially clouded sky this morning. Current temperature at 8am is 32C. Look forward to a nice and warm day with sunshine. A surprise tropical shower may be in the cars in some parts of the island.

Until 29th October the floating temple boats or Rua Phra will be on display until at least tonight. If you haven't been yet, make sure to visit. It's well worth a visit.

Last week saw an improvement to the rainy week before that. The beginning of the week still saw some hard rain. At the end of the week we had a few strong showers, but nothing too serious. We also had plenty of sunshine and warm to hot days! Maximum temperatures reached 33C towards the end of the week and the minimum didn't drop below 24C at night.

Sunday monring life ina  small Soi in Surat Thani town. Off the main road opposite the government hospital in the middle of town.

The forecast for next week is looking good. We're heading into November on a high! Next week forecasts predict mostly sunny to partially cloudy skies. An occasional tropical shower may hit you, but that shouldn't last much longer than an hour or so.
A nice way to end October. Next month is most likely the wettest month in the year. Samui's rainy season is about to hit sometime next month.
For next week though, enjoy your stay on the island and have a look around. There's plenty to discover.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 14th October – 20th October 2019

It's Sunday afternoon and time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 14th October – 20th October 2019.
The long slow distance run is in the bag and the weather is interesting! It's sunny at the moment at around 2.30pm with a current temperature of 27C. Not too hot, actually very nice.

Last week we went on a short holiday trip with the family, via Surat Thani and Hua Hin all the way up the to the Maeklong railway market in Samut Songkhram and the floating market at Damnoen Saduak in Ratchaburi province. Just 70km south of Bangkok! Via Chumpon we came back to Koh Samui.

The Rua Chakra or floating boats were scheduled last week all around Thailand. This picture is taken in Plai Laem and is the floating boat from the local temple.

Last week saw lots of rain on Koh Samui. Heavy rain with thunder, drizzle and light rain. A nice prelude to the rainy season. Maximum temperatures reached 32C and the minimum temperature dropped once to 22C.

During last week's trip we visitied a freind in Hua Hin. We took the opportunity to visit the Rajabhakti park. It's a historically themed park honouring past Thai kings from the Sukhothai period to the current royal house of Chakri. Seven Thai Kings in total.

The forecast for next week looks a lot better. Tomorrow, Monday, night still be fairly wet! Be warned. However, from Tuesday onward it should clear up and partially to sunny skies may prevail. The rain should be gone for the time being.
Enjoy next week on the island. It's fairly quiet, you can feel as if the island is all yours alone!

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 7th October – 13th October 2019

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 7th October – 13th October 2019

Here awe are again, Sunday morning and time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 7th October – 13th October 2019.
The Sunday run is in the bag and the sun is out!

It was cloudy to partially clouded earlier this morning. However, the sun is taking over control. It's getting more blue by the minute almost. Current temperature at 11am is 30C and rising. It feels a lot hotter outside, once you're in the sun.

Last week saw plenty of nice sunny to partially clouded days. However, towards the end of the week we saw some showers. Starting Thursday afternoon. Yesterday it was dry and sunny at Plai Laem all day long. However, our oldest daughter had to go to the Navy camp in Lipa Noi. The King's daughter was visiting and releasing turtles. Once she got back she mentioned that it rained there.
Maximum temperatures last week ranged from 35C in the beginning of the week to 23C a few times during the night time.

New signage at Central Festival in Chaweng. A great and popular photo opportunity.

The forecast for next week is not looking that great. We're getting to the half way mark of this month and that can lead us to some foretastes of the rainy season. The current typhoon, Hagidis, that is or was battering Japan, is rubbing off on Thailand now. That includes Samui. Tomorrow we get a very short but harsh storm spot between 10am and 1pm. Lots of rain during that period as well. Let's see how accurate this prediction will be.
The rest of the week will see some hard rain as well. Not on all days, mostly towards the end of the week. Possibly including next weekend.
