Goodbye to April 2010

Goodbye to April 2010

It's that time of the month again and April is about to change into May.

This years April was spot on as you can expect during April on Samui. Hot and hardly any rain at all.

This in contrast with the 2007 version which saw rain over Songkran or the 2008 version that saw some torrential rain storms or 2009 that started out wet.

Blog wise it was a rather quiet month although I had some nice pix of this years Songkran.

I had a PADI IDC on and just got back from Koh Tao yesterday from the PADI IE. The Instructor Specialties were already out of the way.

Let's move on to May 2010 and see what that month will bring, we can only hope that the whole Bangkok situation will be diffused soon.

The Picnic Basket up for sale, an end to an era?

The Picnic Basket up for sale, an end to an era?

It's just over a year ago that I wrote about the Picnic Basket changing location in Bang Rak.

After 9 years in business, Paul has had enough of being in the shop 7 days a week, from early in the morning starting to shop and finishing early in the evening. A combination of working too much and not enjoying the work any more made him decide about 5 weeks ago to call it a day and put his Picnic Basket up for sale.

After having seen the place closed for a couple of weeks now, nobody really seemed to know why it was closed and today I was teaching an EFRI course in classroom of the Hyperbaric Chamber next door to the Picnic Basket when in the morning I took a picture of the poster that's been put up, with the details for the sale on it.
Later today, I saw Paul sitting inside and had a chat with him. He's having a better feeling about the whole situation now, having taken a step back since 5 weeks. So, if anybody has a spare 3 million Baht floating around, call Paul and get involved with an excellent restaurant in Bang Rak with a nice turn over and a steady clientele!

On a similar token, the Mango Russian restaurant in Chaweng, has been closed down since a while.

Today's weather;

A nice blue sky is shaping up over Samui with a current temp at 7am of 29.9C!

Sunset yesterday in Nathon

Yesterday saw another hot day with a max temp of 31.7C
It was so hot, that during the Open Water dive of my current IDC that I'm teaching, I burnt the soles of my feet whilst walking around on the pavement and Chaweng Beach's sand before entering the water!

The Songkran death toll count kicks in and currently there are 114 fatalities, 19 more than last year at the same days count.

With all the unrest in Bangkok which involves the so called Red shirts, who are following Thaksin Shinawatra's political goals, he's supposedly very ill from prostrate cancer.
The plot thickens.

Songkran 2010 on Koh Samui

Songkran 2010 on Koh Samui

Songkran was fun as it is each year but I'm also very happy that it only lasts one day on Koh Samui in contrast to other places in Thailand like Pattaya, Chiang Mai and Kao San road in Bangkok.

We started the day in a very traditional way with a visit to my wife's Grandma, the only one still alive. My wife prepared this bowl of water and she put some flowers from our garden in it and we added some baby powder and this is the original mix that is used over centuries to celebrate the Thai New year or Songkran. Oh, and you don't drown somebody in or with it but you scoop a little bit of the mix in your hand and gently put some water on somebody's shirt or such.

What's wrong with a love, peace and understanding

A great text anchor considering what just happened in Bangkok a few days ago. Nonetheless, last news is that even in Kao San road which was near the centre of the clashes earlier this week, there was a party going on. A slightly dramatic picture in these rather dramatic political days in Thailand.

Nonetheless, yesterday was party time and these young Thai fellows had a blast in Bang Rak!

Proof of how hot it was yesterday and a great sample of how the dress code can be like.

The guy with the melon is every year in Chaweng, I wonder if he recycles the melon.

My favourite water gun with a small umbrella in front to avoid being hit your self! Excellent idea.

An overview of Chaweng although it looks pretty busy, I never seen it so quiet during Songkran!

Hope you enjoyed the pictures and up to next year April!

Chakri Memorial Day

Chakri Memorial Day

Today's Chakri Memorial Day commemorates the establishment of the Chakri Dynasty and the founding of Bangkok by King Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke in 1782. Officially known as King Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke the Great Day and Chakri Dynasty Memorial Day (วันพระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลกมหาราชและวันที่ระลึกมหาจักรีบรมราชวงศ์).

Prior to the establishment of Chakri Dynasty (the current royal lineage), the Kingdom of Siam (former name of Thailand) was in turmoil.

Aggressive Burmese troops occupied the Northern Kingdom of Lan Na and were proceeding down south to the Siamese Royal Capital of Ayutthaya. A young man of noble Ayutthaya descent named Thong Duang (born in 1737) commanded the bitter fights in the Northern war.

Despite the efforts to fight back, they were gradually forced to fall back until the Burmese had gotten a grip on the Royal Capital.
Ayutthaya fell on April 8th, 1767 and the Siamese people fled to the city of Thonburi located further downriver on the mighty Chaophraya River.
The beautiful city of Ayutthaya was destroyed by the Burmese, temples plundered, gold and jewelry looted, monks and women were cruelly effected. But the Burmese had suffered heavily in the taking of Ayutthaya and knew the Siamese would return to take up battle. Knowing they could not hold Ayutthaya, the Burmese retreated after only one week.

War campaigns continued over the years, ebbing and flowing, until the Siamese armies united during 1779 in Thonburi. Thong Duang now known as Chakri became the military commander. He realized that the Royal Court of King Taaksin was in such disharmony because the King, weary of wars, had resorted to religion rather than addressed the needs of his subjects. The lack of leadership caused rebellions to break out. Rebels marched on Thonburi, calling for the overthrow and replacement of King Taaksin with their beloved "Chakri." As a result Chaophraya Chakri took the title "King Ramathibodi" and reigned as King Rama I from April 6 1782 until 1809.

As an experienced military campaigner, King Rama I of the Chakri Dynasty knew that the city of Thonburi was vulnerable to possible Burmese attack from the west. Accordingly, he commanded that a new Capital be established across Chaophraya River. And so Krung - Thep (Bangkok) was created.

Chakri Day commemorates the founding of the Chakri Dynasty in 1782 by King Rama I. In the new capital city of Bangkok, King Rama I built the Grand Palace that now houses the Emerald Buddha. In addition, he helped release Thailand from the Burmese control, after Ayutthaya succumbed 14 years earlier.

In commemorating “Chakri Day,” the national flag is proudly displayed by the people of Thailand and both government officials and members of the community participate in traditional ceremonies, making offerings of flowers and garlands at the many statues of Kings in the House of Chakri.

King Bhumibol Adulyadej is the current King, known as King Rama IX or the ninth King of the Chakri dynasty. A Royal ceremony is performed by the King to pay respects to King Rama I the Great, the founder of the Chakri Dynasty.

Welcome to April the 2010 version

Welcome to April the 2010 version

It's gonna be a good month, it's gonna be a good, good month (imagine the Black Eyed Peas tune to it).

April usually is the month with August where it becomes as good as it gets. April should be hot and great for diving with up to 30 meters visibility or better.

With Chakri Day on the 6th and Songkran on the 13th -15th or the Thai New Year it also hosts two big Buddhist celebration days.

Especially Songkran is something not to be missed if you haven't witnessed it yet! Especially in Chiang Mai, Khao San Road in Bangkok and in Pattaya it's a 3 day water throwing party.
