Samui flash flooding, March 2011

Samui flash flooding, March 2011

Yesterday saw a bit of very unusual rain around Samui and Southern Thailand. Normally it should be dry and hot this time of the year and rain like this is out of schedule so to speak.

In Bang Rak the fire brigade had to come out and pump water off the street. Since my return from Koh Lanta, this section of the road in Bang Rak seems to floods even when you throw a bucket of water out of your house. It looks like the water doesn't have an option to go to the beach, as if somebody build a wall and closed it off and prevents the natural water flow towards the ocean.

Chaweng hills near the ring road were covered in low hanging clouds and it looked like the rain could start again any moment.

Bang Rak bay is filled up to the rafters with fishing boats and loads of other boats looking for shelter for the wind and waves. The amount of fishing boats lining up in the bay gives you a good indication how rough it is out there. The ferries to Koh Phangan and Koh Tao should be no pleasure ride.
Today might have some more rain and than it should clear up again until the 24th March, when more rain and strong wind is predicted.

  1. Hi Camille

Yours is the first proper information I have seen about the problems in Samui, where my daughter and her friend are staying. I wonder if you have the latest on the outlook for flights out (her friends' parents could not
fly out today) and boats out (they want to get back to the mainland).
Wishing you good luck in the atrocious conditions.

  2. Hi David,

Possibly tomorrow the airport might open again. The rain and the wind is supposed to be slow down by Friday.

    Hope this helps for now.

  15. Hi Benny,

A late response so I'm not sure what you decided to do but my advise is to stay clear of Samui for the next couple of days unless you need to be here.

Thanks for keep updating latest information for samui! I m traveling to samui by end of April staying in Bo Phut villa, do you think it's safe to come? I see that a lot of places and roads are damage, does that affect the tourist area? Are we expecting some sunshine soon?

    Thanks for your help!
